He Was No Hippie: Remembering Manson, Prison, Scientology, and Mind Control

As I was diving into my research, I received a letter from Charlie himself.
By Paul Krassner / AlterNet  November 26, 2017

When Charles Manson was a prison inmate, he got introduced to Scientology by fellow prisoners, and his ability to psych out people was intensified so that he could zero in on their weaknesses and fears. In 1967, he was released and went to the Scientology Center in San Francisco. A friend who accompanied him there told me, “Charlie said to them, ‘I’m Clear – what do I do now?’”

But they expected him to sweep the floor – shit, he had done that in jail. However, in Los Angeles, he went to the Scientology Celebrity Center. Now this was more like it – there he could mingle with the elite. I was able to obtain a copy of the original log entry: “7/31/68, new name, Charlie Manson, Devt. No address. In for processing = Ethics = Type III.” The receptionist – who, by Type III, meant “psychotic” – sent him to the Ethics office but he never showed up.

At the Spahn Ranch, Manson combined his version of Scientology auditing with post-hypnotic techniques he had learned in prison, with geographical isolation and subliminal motivation, with sing-along sessions and encounter games, with LSD and mescaline, with transactional analysis and brainwashing rituals, with verbal probing and sexual longevity that he had practiced upon himself for all those years in the privacy of his cell. He was also raped by fellow inmates.

Ultimately, in August 1969, he sent his well-programmed “family” off to slay actress Sharon Tate, some friends, and her unborn baby. Tate’s husband, film director Roman Polanski, was in London at the time. A few months later, when the family members were captured and charged with homicides, Manson was portrayed by the media as a hippie cult leader, and the counterculture became a dangerous enemy. Hitchhikers were shunned. Communes were raided. In the public’s mind, flower children had grown poisonous thorns. But Manson was never really a hippie.

He had grown up behind bars. His real family included con artists, pimps, drug dealers, thieves, muggers, rapists, and murderers. He had known only power relationships in an army of control junkies….

Wormwood Trailer: Netflix’s Groundbreaking Mystery Series Will Suck You in Over the Holidays
by Kyle Munzenrieder December 4, 2017

….It’s the work of legendary documentary filmmaker Errol Morris, and touches on everything from LSD to the CIA, from mind control to corruption. Dramatic reenactments are interspersed with documentary-style testimonials from real life figures.

Sarsgaard stars as Frank Olson, a bacteriologist, who, while working for the CIA in the ’50s, was secretly dosed with LSD. Just days after the dose he wound up falling from the window of a New York City hotel room. The death was officially ruled a suicide, but to this day some maintain that his death was a murder. Complicating the matter is that many of Olsen’s CIA colleagues were working on the agency’s secretive mind control project known as MKUltra at the time. More than two decades after his death, his family was awarded a $750,000 settlement from the CIA. To this day, however, Olson’s son Eric continues to raise questions about the mysterious circumstances of Olson’s death. In Wormwood, Morris tackles both the elder Olson’s death and the younger Olson’s lifelong devotion to unraveling the mystery.

Holy Hell – one family’s story of sexual abuse by their priest
By Carol Duncan (ABC Local Radio) 26 March, 2013

When senior NSW Police Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox told ABC TV’s Lateline programme that the Catholic Church had covered up crimes by paedophile priests, silenced investigations and destroyed evidence to avoid prosecution – the public outrage triggered a Royal Commission into institutional child abuse. One of the stories that led to this is that of Patricia Feenan’s son, Daniel, a 14-year-old altar boy when first raped by a priest in the Newcastle/Maitland diocese….

Patricia Feenan says that one of the problems with the media coverage was that there no reporting of the ‘culture of grooming’ and that discussing it, educating people about it means they’re more aware but also hopefully more likely to tell someone and to seek help.

“The reaction I’ve had from many people, and many victims who are positive and thankful, means I know I’ve helped people. One man wrote that he’d never disclosed his abuse but he read the book and gave it to his mother, telling her ‘This is what happened to me.’

Sadly, Patricia fears that sexual abuse by the clergy continues, and will continue.

“We hear that it’s historical, and I’ll concede that the church is trying very hard now with protocols put in place to deal with victims who come forward now, but when they say it’s historical, that’s true the offence was historical, but the impact is with us every day, and it’s certainly with my son every day of his life. If people understand that more, maybe they can walk some of the journey. Emotional support is what victims want, not ostracisization.”… http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2013/03/26/3723929.htm

Artist Graham Ovenden accused of being paedophile
Graham Ovenden Graham Ovenden denies the charges 11 March 2013

An internationally-acclaimed artist has been described in court as a paedophile who blindfolded girls and committed indecent acts.

Graham Ovenden, 70 – who has had work hung at the Tate Gallery – is accused of sexually abusing children in London and Cornwall. Truro Crown Court heard Mr Ovenden’s “target of abuse was young girls.”

He denies nine charges of indecency with a child and indecent assault on victims aged between six and 14. When he was arrested over the alleged abuse of one of the girls, Mr Ovenden admitted he had taken photographs of her – a few of them being “nudies”, the court was told. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-21745915

Sandusky speaks from prison: Witness’s ‘story changed a lot’
By Mark Morgenstein, CNN  Mon March 25, 2013

Jerry Sandusky has been interviewed for the first time since going to prison in October. Documentary filmmaker John Ziegler shares the convicted pedophile’s comments on Joe Paterno, and on the prosecution’s key witness, with Piers Morgan, at 9 p.m. ET Monday on CNN.

(CNN) — Jerry Sandusky will probably be incarcerated for the rest of his life for child sex abuse convictions, but the former Penn State assistant football coach is making sure he has his say outside the prison walls.

Documentary filmmaker John Ziegler interviewed Sandusky, 68, for a project he calls “The Framing of Joe Paterno.” On Monday, NBC’s “Today” show aired a portion of a phone conversation between the two men.

In the broadcast excerpts, Sandusky questioned the credibility of prosecution witness Mike McQueary, another former Penn State assistant coach, who testified that he walked in on Sandusky raping a child in the showers at a school facility.

“I think there’s a lot of things that transpired. I think these investigators, the way they went about business, you know, his story changed a lot. I think he said some things, and then it escalated on him,” Sandusky said. “I don’t understand how anybody would have walked into that locker room from where he was and heard sounds associated that was sex going on. (laughter) You know, like he said that could’ve been, I mean, there was … that would have been the last thing I would have thought about. I would’ve thought maybe fooling around or something like that. (laughter)”

Sandusky also discussed what Joe Paterno, the legendary Penn State head coach who was forced out as a result of the scandal, knew — or didn’t know.

“If he absolutely thought I was (a pedophile), I’d say no. If he had a suspicion, I don’t know the answer to that,” Sandusky said….

Sandusky was sentenced in October to 30 to 60 years in prison for abusing 10 boys during a 15-year period….http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/25/us/pennsylvania-sandusky-interview/index.html

Sandusky’s Back for His Sentencing – and Facing More Accusers

Sandusky’s Back for His Sentencing – and Facing More Accusers
Oct 8, 2012 Diane Dimond

The convicted ex-coach heads to court Tuesday to hear his sentence. Diane Dimond reports on the new accusers who have stepped forward since the trial—including his own adopted son, whose birth mother speaks exclusively about why Matt Sandusky is remaining silent. Plus, local law enforcement’s fears of keeping Sandusky safe from vengeful attacks, and what he’s been up to in jail.

…The court’s sentencing procedure is mandated by law. First, there will be a determination made about whether Sandusky qualifies to be registered under the Meghan Law as a sexual predator. Given his conviction, it seems like a foregone conclusion, but the designation is important as it will guide the state in how it deals with Sandusky in the unlikely event he is ever released from prison.

Then, before Senior Judge John Cleland announces his sentencing decision, Sandusky’s victims will be afforded time to give a statement to the court outlining how the crimes have affected their lives. It is unknown how many, if any, of the eight witness/victims (or their family members) will speak.

A statement from the young man designated by the prosecution as Victim No. 1 would be of particular interest as he was the first to reveal to police the prolonged abuse he suffered at the hands of the once influential football coach. This teenager waited through an initially lackluster investigation that took three long years before Sandusky was arrested. His attorney, Slade McLaughlin, told The Daily Beast he is unable to say whether Victim No. 1 will speak at the hearing. The young man, along with his mother and his psychologist, has written a book, Silent No More: Victim Number 1’s Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky, which is set to be released later this month.

…. Attorneys for Matthew Heichel Sandusky, who was adopted by the family at age 18 after having lived in the Sandusky home for many years, stunned verdict watchers in June when they revealed, just after the jury was sequestered, that Matt also been allegedly molested by Sandusky.  Matt immediately went into hiding and offered no personal account of his abuse. Matt’s biological mother, Debra Rose Long, who had waged a years-long and unsuccessful court fight to keep the powerful football icon away from her young son, now tells The Daily Beast she and her son have been reunited….

Sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with 54% still being left unreported.

What happens to Rapists When They are Caught and Prosecuted?

54% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police, according to a statistical average of the past 5 years. Those rapists, of course, never spend a day in prison. Factoring in unreported rapes, only about 3% of rapists ever serve a day in jail. http://rainn.org/get-information/statistics/reporting-rates

Testimony Begins In Child Sex-Abuse Trial For Philadelphia Catholic Priests, Archdiocese

By MARYCLAIRE DALE 03/27/12

PHILADELPHIA — Prosecutors aired dozens of confidential church documents in court Tuesday to try to prove the Philadelphia archdiocese routinely buried complaints that priests were molesting children.

Monsignor William Lynn is the first Roman Catholic official in the U.S. charged with endangering children by keeping accused priests in parish work.

The letters and memos read in court Tuesday centered on now-defrocked priest Edward Avery. Avery, known as the Smiling Padre, adopted six Hmong children and moonlighted as a disc jockey at parties and nightclubs throughout his three-decade church career.

According to the documents, a medical student told the archdiocese in 1992 that Avery had molested him after a DJ gig when the priest and the high school freshman were drinking heavily at a West Philadelphia nightclub. It happened again at age 19 when the two shared a motel bed on a ski trip to Vermont with Avery’s brother, he said.

Avery denied the allegations to Lynn, but then said they “could” have happened. A four-day evaluation at a church-owned hospital showed he may be bipolar and have alcohol and psycho-sexual problems. Avery was admitted to St. John Vianney in Downingtown for nearly a year of sex therapy and mental health treatment.

Avery’s parishioners were told that their outgoing, energetic pastor was on a “health leave” but heard no mention of the abuse allegation. Lynn’s lawyers said the documents show that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua gave those orders.

St. John Vianney never diagnosed Avery as a pedophile but said he should not be around adolescents or work as a DJ.

Lynn next recommended that Avery go to a Philadelphia parish with a tough pastor, although that parish had a school attached. Bevilacqua instead sent Avery to work as a hospital chaplain, with residency at St. Jerome’s Parish. The northeast Philadelphia parish was home to many of the city’s police and firefighters and had an elementary school.

Avery, 69, admitted last week that he sexually assaulted a fifth-grader there in 1999, forcing the altar boy to strip naked after Mass in the church sacristy. Instead of going on trial with Lynn, Avery pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and conspiracy and will serve 2 1/2 to five years in prison….  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/27/philly-sex-abuse-case_n_1381982.html
