Why the silence? Child abuse expert weighs in
Anne Schindler, First Coast News August 25, 2015
Pedophiles can wield enormous influence over their victims – and their communities. That power often means the abuse is followed by years of silence.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As became clear in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case at Penn State, pedophiles can wield enormous influence over their victims – and their communities. That power often means the abuse is followed by years of silence.
But child abuse expert Stacy Pendarvis says time – and even justice — can help restore the balance of power.
Pendarvis is the program manager at the Monique Burr Foundation, a Jacksonville nonprofit that works to end all types of child victimization. She says that while the allegations in the Pak’s Karate case may seem staggering, but they fit a familiar pattern – multiple victims, hundreds of incidents, over a period of many years.
“You think of priests pastors and teachers — they use that position of power to totally manipulate their victims. That just tends to be the norm with pedophiles.”
Perhaps the most confounding part of the pattern: silence.
“More often than not, they do not disclose as children. And that sad reality allows offenders to continue to offend year after year after year, and take on new victims.”….

Lawyers say Jacko paid $200M in hush money to ‘victims’
By Stacy Brown April 5, 2015
Wade Robson and James Safechuck may accomplish what countless prosecutors could not: prove in court that Michael Jackson was a serial child molester.
The purported victims must first overcome a major hurdle — both their legal claims were filed more than a year after the King of Pop’s 2009 death, missing the statutory deadline….
Lawyers say the King of Pop shelled out nearly $200 million to as many as 20 victims.
Safechuck first met Jacko in 1987, when James was 8 years old. Safechuck will testify that Jacko repeatedly molested him a year later during a tour and that Jacko wrote a check for more than $1 million to Safechuck’s father, a sanitation worker.
Safechuck claims in court filings that Jacko held a secret wedding ceremony, with the young boy as his bride. He said the singer gave him a marriage certificate and a wedding band as keepsakes and confirmation of their “undying love.”
It was Safechuck and another alleged victim, Jordan Chandler, to whom Jacko’s sister LaToya referred in a 1993 Tel Aviv press conference in which she vowed to “not be a silent collaborator in my brother’s crimes.”….
Safechuck’s attorney alleges that Jacko molested Safechuck more than 100 times….
The duo for the first time will be allowed to detail past, undisclosed settlements between Jacko and boys. Sources contend there were at least 20 young victims, who reaped — with their parents and attorneys — upward of $200 million cumulatively in hush money.
The Chandler lawsuit alone cost Jacko more than $40 million, sources said….
Michael Jackson allegedly paid millions to silence accusers
Apr 5th 2015
Two new civil cases have accused Michael Jackson of paying millions in hush money to sexual abuse accusers over the years.
Two men, claiming to have been abused by Jackson as children, are suing his estate for punitive damages. Because they are civil cases, lawyers will be able to use evidence excluded from the criminal proceedings.
The New York Post reports that Jackson paid out nearly $200 million to at least 20 alleged victims and their families over the years….
One of the men suing Jackson’s estate, James Safechuck, claims he was abused more than 100 times by the pop star, beginning when he was eight years old. The suit also claims that Jackson wrote a $1 million check to Safechuck’s father.
Both the cases were filed over a year after Jackson’s death, which misses the statutory deadline. A Los Angeles court judge will decide Thursday if the cases can proceed….
Michael Jackson Allegedly Paid $200 Million to 20 Child Sex Abuse Victims

Why is it that Michael Jackson child sex cases always seemed to get pushed under the rug? It could be because Jackson allegedly paid $200 million to keep victims quiet.
Lawyers for Wade Robson and James Safechuck say as many as 20 victims were paid off. Both Robson and Safechuck says Jackson sexually abused them when they were children. A judge is deciding whether they can bring this information to court for the first time.
Safechuck says the abuse happened when he was nine, and that Jackson paid his father $1 million. He also says Jackson held a secret wedding ceremony and he was the child bride.
Robson says he was seven when Jackson began molesting him. He also says he shared a bed with the pop star for a year….

Influential Secret Society Blamed For Problems On Campus Dodges Transparency Push
Tyler Kingkade 04/01/2015
The University of Alabama student government voted down a proposal last week to establish political parties, which could have forced a well-known secret society, blamed for many social ills on campus, to go public.
In a 21-9 vote on March 26, the Student Government Association Senate shot down a resolution that called for allowing students to set up political parties for on-campus elections. Currently, UA rules forbid official political parties. However, an underground society called “The Machine” is widely known to pick and endorse candidates and allegedly intimidates and harasses its opponents.
According to the United Alabama Project, a student group that came up with the proposal, all but one of the senators who voted against the resolution were backed by the Machine. None of them spoke publicly in opposition to the resolution during the senate meetings….
The Machine has existed for roughly a century, and is comprised of members from select fraternities and sororities. The group directs its members, and by extension their fellow fraternity brothers and sorority sisters, to vote for candidates of their choosing. The Machine has even been known to influence local political elections, according to The New York Times.
Students have accused the Machine of being a major reason why UA sororities were still excluding black women from joining in 2013, as well as for acting as a roadblock in subsequent attempts by other SGA representatives to push the Greek system toward integration in 2014….

Abuse Cases, and a Legacy of Skepticism
‘The Witch-Hunt Narrative’: Are We Dismissing Real Victims?
JUNE 9, 2014
….McMartin was the first of a series of prosecutions in the 1980s that have come to be seen as a collective witch hunt, in which panicked parents and incompetent investigators led children to make up stories of abuse by adults at day care centers and preschools.
At first, the news media ran with the lurid accounts of abuse, but then some skeptical reporters questioned the prevailing narrative and discredited the snowballing allegations. The pendulum swung from credulity to doubt.
But what if the skeptics went too far? What if some of the children were really abused? And what if the legacy of these cases is a disturbing tendency to disbelieve children who say they are being molested?
Those are the questions that frame this new book by Ross E. Cheit, a political scientist at Brown University who spent nearly 15 years on research, poring over old trial transcripts and interview tapes.
His conclusion about the McMartin case is that the outcome was “doubly unjust.” While he acknowledges that some defendants were falsely accused, he argues that Mr. Buckey was probably guilty, meaning that some of the children were not only sexually abused but “have been demeaned by the witch-hunt narrative’s assertion that the entire case was a ‘hoax.’ ”
It’s a provocative notion, that the debunkers deserve a debunking. Professor Cheit, who himself suffered sexual abuse as a child, criticizes the skepticism that helped bring down the prosecutions of McMartin and other day-care providers, calling it a “crusade to promote the witch-hunt narrative.”
He thinks the continued treatment of these cases as a modern-day episode of mass hysteria does disservice to children and even puts them in danger….
Most children who are sexually abused do not tell anyone. “Perpetrators often choose children on the basis of the likelihood that they will comply and keep the secret,” Dr. Lyon writes.
It’s a pattern that played out in the years of hidden sexual abuse by Catholic priests, and at Penn State by the coach Jerry Sandusky.
Professor Cheit is rightly haunted by the cover-up at Penn State. “We often minimize and deny so as to allow us to avoid seeing things we would rather not see,” he writes….

Germany’s Shelter for Victims of Ritual Abuse
By Antonia Oettingen
Gaby Breitenbach has seen and heard some awful things. The German psychotherapist is telling me about how sometimes, from a very young age, women are systematically tortured by people seeking to split their minds into multiple identities. The desire is to control the victims, of course, but also to leave them with an identity that seems perfectly normal to strangers. While the victim’s everyday identity will have no “memory” of the trauma they’ve experienced, Breitenbach says the abusers are able to “summon” the other identities with various triggers. This can be something as simple as a ringtone, for example.
This method of mind control is known as “ritual abuse.” Most of the time the abuse is sexual in nature. Sometimes the abusers crave power; sometimes they’re just being cruel. Sometimes they’re pseudo-religious nutjobs, sometimes they’re fascists, and oftentimes they are organized crime networks. Sometimes the abusers use their victims to gain membership to a secret society; sometimes they flick a switch in their minds to make them commit suicide. The world can be an incredibly shitty place.
Last month, Breitenbach opened a safehouse to treat victims of ritual abuse in Germany. Vielseits, which translates to versatility, is the first of its kind in Europe and offers trauma therapy to anyone who walks through its doors….
Can you tell me about the kind of women who seek help at Vielseits?
All the women who end up with us are victims of organized, sadistic, and sexual violence, who have been subjected to mind control. There are also organizations practicing ritual abuse with a kind of spiritual superstructure where certain ideologies come into play, such as neo-fascist mindsets or different pseudo-religious groups, like Scientology or satanic cults.
From an outsider’s perspective, these are women who appear to have led seemingly normal lives—their everyday persona wouldn’t have been aware of the abuse they were subjected to at night, weekends, or on school holidays. These traumatic experiences are contained in different parts of the identity, so they’re kept away from the conscious, and the person has no knowledge of the trauma they’ve experienced.
How are these personas created?
The victims are subjected to near-death situations—with the help of electric shocks, waterboarding, or other forms of torture—from an early age, and then they’re “rescued” by their tormentors. At some point the victim’s psyche will develop an automated response—it will split, in a bid to survive. As a consequence of the systematic torture, the victims can develop a range of different identities throughout their lifetimes. Offenders perpetrating the abuse hold the key to this system of split identities and have the power to evoke a specific set of behaviors using triggers—which can be hand signs or certain smells or sounds, like a ringtone….

Late BBC Host Jimmy Savile Abused ‘Up to 1,000 People’ (Report) 1/20/2014 by Georg Szalai
A report about the results of an internal probe at the U.K. public broadcaster is expected to be published in February.
LONDON — The final report on an internal BBC probe is expected to state that late radio and TV host Jimmy Savile sexually abused “many hundreds and potentially up to 1,000 people” while working for the U.K. public broadcaster, the Guardian’s sister publication The Observer reported.
At least 138 victims are believed to be pursuing civil actions against the BBC, according to the newspaper report. Last year, a police report cited 214 abuse cases and about 450 overall complaints recorded by authorities.
The BBC report is also set to call on the broadcaster’s leadership to reform a “culture of secrecy,” according to the paper….
Report: Television Star Jimmy Savile Sexually Abused Victims in BBC Studios
by Warner Todd Huston 19 Jan 2014
Just when the UK may have thought that there could not be any worse news about the sex abuse scandal perpetrated by its once most famous TV and radio star, the Jimmy Savile case gets worse—not just for the late celebrity’s reputation but for those accused of enabling him, including the CEO of the New York Times.
A new report is about to come out saying that Savile abused teens right on the premises of government-run broadcasting facilities.
Jimmy Savile, an actor, TV and radio announcer—or “presenter” as they call it in Britain—and well-loved charity spokesman, passed away in 2011, but only months later, rumors of his rampant abuse of British teens who were enamored of his stardom began to leak out.
In 2012, allegations of his sexual abuse of vulnerable young Brits gained critical mass, and a full-scale government investigation was launched—as the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) is owned and run by the government. This gave Savile’s crimes an air of government approval when it became known that many BBC officials may have known of Savile’s crimes but covered them up, assisted in them, or at the least ignored them.
By June of 2013, not only had hundreds of cases of abuse come to light but the investigation had spread to other BBC employees.
In mid-2013, the BBC released a statement saying that it was “appalled” by all the sexual crimes perpetrated by Savile and his cohorts….
A source close to Dame Janet’s investigation told the British media: “The numbers are shocking. Many hundreds and potentially up to 1,000 people were victims of Savile when he was representing the corporation. The report will overshadow Pollard. It will go right to the heart of how Savile was able to get away with the most heinous of crimes under the very noses of BBC staff for more than 40 years.”….
Culture of secrecy blamed for BBC’s failure to stop Jimmy Savile’s crimes
Chris Patten pressed to prove corporation has changed as inquiry expected to conclude that DJ abused up to 1,000 people
Jason Deans The Guardian, Sunday 19 January 2014
Senior BBC figures are facing calls to reform the corporation’s “culture of secrecy”, as an internal inquiry is expected to reveal Jimmy Savile sexually abused up to 1,000 children while working for the corporation.
The BBC Trust chairman Chris Patten and director general Tony Hall will come under renewed pressure to show that the corporation has decisively changed a culture that allowed Savile to abuse his victims unchecked during more than 40 years as a presenter of TV shows including Top of the Pops and as a Radio 1 DJ. Savile died in 2011.
Former court of appeal judge Dame Janet Smith’s report will say the number of victims of Savile’s sexual activities may never be known but that his behaviour had been recognised by BBC executives who took no action, according to the Observer. At least 138 victims are pursuing civil actions against the BBC.
The paper quoted a source close to the Smith inquiry, expected to report next month, saying that “many hundreds and potentially up to 1,000 people” were victims of Savile while he was working for the BBC from the 1960s until his retirement in 2006….
Britain disrupts Philippines online child abuse ring
Kim Hjelmgaard, USA TODAY January 16, 2014
LONDON — Britain’s National Crime Agency said it has broken up an international crime group that live-streamed child sexual abuse from the Philippines.
The agency said the joint investigation with authorities in the United States and Australia yielded 29 arrests for people in 12 countries who had paid to watch the online abuse, which in some cases was arranged by members of the children’s own families.
In a statement, the NCA said that the “use of Web cams to stream live abuse, particularly from the developing world, is a significant and emerging threat.”
The investigation was started after a routine visit by police in the English county of Northamptonshire to a registered sex offender, the NCA said. The probe began in 2012 and resulted in 15 children ages 6 to 15 being safeguarded from abuse….

Minn. diocese releases list of accused clergy
Friday, January 3, 2014
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — The Diocese of St. Cloud joined other Roman Catholic dioceses around Minnesota Friday in releasing lists of clergy credibly accused of sexually abusing minors.
The St. Cloud diocese released a list of 33 names. Twenty-one people on the list are dead.
On Thursday, a man who says he was sexually abused by a priest in the mid-1960s held a news conference with his attorneys to demand the list’s release.
But Jane Marrin, communications consultant for the diocese, told the St. Cloud Times the diocese already had been working on the list….
So in mid-December, I decided to release the names of those clergy,” (Bishop Donald) Kettler said.
Jimmy Savile victims call for single inquiry
By David Sillito Media Correspondent 6 January 2014
Victims of Jimmy Savile are calling for a single inquiry into how the ex-BBC DJ and presenter managed to evade justice.
There are more than 30 individual investigations being carried out by organisations linked to Savile.
About 50 of the people who have reported being abused say they fear key questions will not be answered about how Savile, who died in 2011, operated.
But the NSPCC charity says creating one overarching inquiry could mean lessons are not learnt as quickly.
Solicitor Alan Collins, who is representing 60 of Savile’s victims in compensation claims, said the majority of his clients fear an unsatisfactory resolution from the separate investigations.
He told the BBC: “It should be one inquiry, chaired by a high court judge. I fear if this does not happen, an opportunity will have been lost, not only for the victims but for the country as a whole.
“The risk (of not having one inquiry) is justice may be incomplete.”….
