Sandusky’s Back for His Sentencing – and Facing More Accusers

The convicted ex-coach heads to court Tuesday to hear his sentence. Diane Dimond reports on the new accusers who have stepped forward since the trial—including his own adopted son, whose birth mother speaks exclusively about why Matt Sandusky is remaining silent. Plus, local law enforcement’s fears of keeping Sandusky safe from vengeful attacks, and what he’s been up to in jail.
…The court’s sentencing procedure is mandated by law. First, there will be a determination made about whether Sandusky qualifies to be registered under the Meghan Law as a sexual predator. Given his conviction, it seems like a foregone conclusion, but the designation is important as it will guide the state in how it deals with Sandusky in the unlikely event he is ever released from prison.
Then, before Senior Judge John Cleland announces his sentencing decision, Sandusky’s victims will be afforded time to give a statement to the court outlining how the crimes have affected their lives. It is unknown how many, if any, of the eight witness/victims (or their family members) will speak.
A statement from the young man designated by the prosecution as Victim No. 1 would be of particular interest as he was the first to reveal to police the prolonged abuse he suffered at the hands of the once influential football coach. This teenager waited through an initially lackluster investigation that took three long years before Sandusky was arrested. His attorney, Slade McLaughlin, told The Daily Beast he is unable to say whether Victim No. 1 will speak at the hearing. The young man, along with his mother and his psychologist, has written a book, Silent No More: Victim Number 1’s Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky, which is set to be released later this month.
…. Attorneys for Matthew Heichel Sandusky, who was adopted by the family at age 18 after having lived in the Sandusky home for many years, stunned verdict watchers in June when they revealed, just after the jury was sequestered, that Matt also been allegedly molested by Sandusky. Matt immediately went into hiding and offered no personal account of his abuse. Matt’s biological mother, Debra Rose Long, who had waged a years-long and unsuccessful court fight to keep the powerful football icon away from her young son, now tells The Daily Beast she and her son have been reunited….

Sandusky prosecution brings 8th accuser to stand ‘Who would believe kids?’

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) – Jurors in Jerry Sandusky’s case were told Thursday the trial would not resume until next week after prosecutors finished calling to the stand eight young men who claimed the former Penn State assistant coach sexually abused them when they were children.
Sandusky’s trial on 52 criminal counts has moved more quickly than many observers have expected, and his lawyers could begin to put on their witnesses as early as Monday. There are two alleged victims have never been identified.
Testimony on Thursday included three more accusers, including a young man who claimed the 68-year-old Sandusky raped him as a teen guest in Sandusky’s basement.
That witness, now 18, told jurors his abuse began with fondling and forced oral sex and led to several instances of rape in Sandusky’s State College home, where he spent more than 100 nights and where his muffled screams went unanswered by Sandusky’s wife, Dottie, who was upstairs.
He said he figured the basement must be soundproof.
“He got real aggressive, and just forced me into it,” he said. “And I just went with it — there was no fighting against it.”
Under cross-examination by Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola, he said the attacks sometimes left him bleeding, but that he never sought medical attention.
“I just dealt with it,” he said.
Described as Victim 9 in court records, he became known to investigators after Sandusky was first arrested in November and his mother summoned police to their home. He said he didn’t want to talk to them at first.
“Who would believe kids?” he said….
Earlier in the day, an accuser called Victim 6 testified that Sandusky described himself as a “tickle monster” and embraced the then-11-year-old boy in a Penn State shower in 1998, an encounter that prompted an investigation but ended without any charges filed.
Now 25, he told jurors Sandusky embraced him in a locker room shower, lathered up his back and shoulders then lifted him chest-to-chest to a shower head to rinse out his hair.
The man said the shared shower happened after a brief workout at a campus gym, even though he hadn’t broken a sweat. His mother went to authorities when she saw her son come home with wet hair, although the inquiry spawned by her report didn’t lead to any charges.

Jerry Sandusky’s Wife Denies She Ignored Rapes, Eight Alleged Victims Will Testify

Jerry Sandusky’s Wife Denies She Ignored Rapes
By COLLEEN CURRY Dec. 8, 2011
Former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky’s wife has denied allegations that her husband sexually abused boys in their home and that she ignored cries for help.
Sandusky was arrested Wednesday on 10 new counts of child sex abuse charges based on the testimony of two new alleged victims. The new allegations bring to 10 the number of alleged sex abuse victims.
Dottie Sandusky, who delivered a $50,000 check today to help bail her husband out of jail, was named in the testimony of one of the new alleged victims.
Mrs. Sandusky has been implicated in the alleged sex abuse crimes by three of the men who claim to have been assaulted by her husband….
The new allegations match a pattern of behavior described by many of the first eight accusers who said that Sandusky sexually assaulted them in the basement of his home during sleepovers. Victim 1 told the grand jury that Sandusky would come down to tell the child it was time to go bed, and then crack his back, blow on his stomach, and eventually sexually assault him.
Victim 9, in the testimony released Wednesday, said that he was told by Sandusky to stay in the basement, where his wife rarely went, and to never go upstairs unless specifically told to do so. He claimed Sandusky brought him all of his meals to eat in the basement. The new accuser noted that there were empty bedrooms on the second floor of the residence, but he was never allowed to stay in them.
Dottie Sandusky flatly denied all of the accusations….
Victim 7 may also implicate Mrs. Sandusky in his testimony during the hearing. In the grand jury presentment, the man testified that Dottie Sandusky tried to contact him in the weeks leading up to her husband’s arrest, leaving him a voicemail saying it was “very important” that he call her back. He did not return the call.http://abcnews.go.com/US/jerry-sanduskys-wife-denies-sex-abuse/story?id=15114113
All Eight of Jerry Sandusky’s Alleged Victims Will Testify Against Him
By COLLEEN CURRY
Dec. 5, 2011
All eight of the boys allegedly sexually abused by former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky will testify against him when preliminary hearings in the case begin next week, according to people close to the case.
News that all eight victims will testify against Sandusky is a blow to his defense. Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, previously told ABC News that at least one of the boys had denied that he was abused.
Sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys over a 15-year period. A key allegation against the 67-year-old former coach was that he was seen raping a boy about the age of 10 in the showers in 2002.
The grand jury report said the identity of the boy, called Victim 2, was not known, but Amendola told ABC News that he believed the defense knew who the boy was and talked to him.
“The kid is … now grown up, he’s in his 20s. He’s adamant that nothing sexual occurred,” Amendola said last month….
Dr. Michael Welner, an ABC News consultant and a forensic psychiatrist, said he finds the evidence against Sandusky compelling.
“They had a discussion in this interview about barriers,” said Welner. “There are no barriers. Sexual assault is a process; it’s the end point of a process of grooming. It didn’t just happen, he orchestrated it, and yet to see that interview, you would think that it just happened, and it’s up to you as a jury or audience to see whether it’s illegal or not.” http://abcnews.go.com/US/penn-state-scandal-victims-testify-jerry-sandusky/story?id=15085783

Sandusky tried to get back into coaching with volunteer job at small college
By Daily Mail Reporter 8th December 2011
Jerry Sandusky was hauled away from his home in handcuffs this afternoon after prosecutors filed amid startling new testimony has emerged from one of his latest alleged victims.
The ninth alleged victim said in sworn testimony that he suffered abuse at Sandusky’s hands for years, often in the basement of the coach’s house.
The victim said Sandusky made him perform oral sex multiple times and tried to anally rape him at least 16 times and succeeded a number of times….
The two newest accusers say they met Sandusky through his charity, the Second Mile, when they were troubled young boys.
‘As in many of the other cases identified to date, the contact with Sandusky allegedly fit a pattern of “grooming” victims,’ Attorney General Linda Kelly said in a statement.
‘Beginning with outings to football games and gifts; they later included physical contact that escalated to sexual assaults.’
Alleged victim says cries for help from Sandusky basement went unheeded
By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com 12/7/11
One of the new alleged victims in the sexual harassment case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky told a grand jury that Sandusky’s wife ignored his screams for help while Sandusky raped him in the basement of their home.
The young man, identified in the new complaint as Victim No. 9, who is now 18 years old, said in his testimony that Sandusky attempted to rape him at least 16 times, sometimes successfully.
“I took it at first he was just a nice guy, like he went to church every weekend, his kids come over every once in a while and stuff,” the young man testified. “And after a while, like, he got used to me and stuff and started getting further and further wanting — to touch feely.”
The presentment says the contacts eventually “escalated to sexual assaults.”
