A woman who was raised inside a notorious ‘cult-like’ yoga ashram has revealed horrific details of her traumatic childhood.
The woman, identified only as Sandra although that is not her real name, opened up about how her upbringing inside the Satyananda Ashram – now known as Mangrove Yoga Ashram – left her broken in a heart-breaking piece published on news.com.au.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found children in the ashram – located in the foothills of Mangrove Mountain on the NSW central coast were raped, sexually assaulted and threatened with violence….
Sandra said she was forced to live in the ashram by her by her mother, who was attracted to the alternative lifestyle.

Once she got there though, she was isolated from her mother as renouncing family members and ‘worshipping’ the guru only was one of the ashram’s rules….

She says children were punished for the smallest things, like talking on the bus ride from school, had their heads flushed in the public toilets for not brushing their teeth, and were beaten in public is they said anything negative about the guru.

Sandra also revealed how at times, women and girls were forced to bathe in the creek where the water was below freezing, instead of taking hot showers like the men.

She said she didn’t cope with the tough conditions – and began taking drugs at 14 and was in a self-induced coma for three days when she was 16….

As an adult, she says she went from one abusive relationship to another – and ended up having a child with a physically abusive paedophile. Since discovering the latter fact, Sandra says she moved her two children away. She and her family have been in hiding ever since….

Last year, the royal commission found Satyananda Ashram was insensitive and defensive in its handling of abuse complaints from the 1970s and 1980s against its former spiritual leader Swami Akhandananda Saraswati.

The commission released its report into the ashram in September and revealed a culture of ‘violence and humiliation’ prevented victims from reporting the abuse – and some were even threatened with murder.

Ten women and one man gave evidence saying they had been sexually abused by him as children at the ashram.
Children as young as four were physically abused by Akhandananda or his former partner Shishy, former residents of the ashram reported.

The abuse ranged from slaps to repeated striking with heavy objects and forms of discipline included hard labour, starvation and humiliation through public nudity.
One victim said she was stripped, held down and had the skin between her breasts cut at the age of seven in an initiation ceremony – before Akhandananda raped her….

Troubling details of life inside notorious Australian cult The Family have been laid bare

….The notorious religious sect, whose leader Anne Hamilton-Byrne proclaimed she was the female reincarnation of Jesus Christ, preached a combination of Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity.

Under the influence of LSD, Hamilton-Byrne claimed she had a vision to collect children and raise them as her family to protect them from the coming global apocalypse.
The family, who represented a “master race”, would then educate the world after Armageddon.

Twenty eight children were allegedly taken and raised by the cult and dressed identically and had their hair bleached blond.
A number of professionals, including doctors and lawyers joined the cult under Hamilton-Byrne.
As the cult continued through the 1970s and 1980s, it was hit with allegations of child abuse.

Children who grew up in the cult were the subject of a documentary released last year which premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
Now a book, The Family, written by Rosie Jones and Chris Johnston exposes what life was like within the sect, The Mirror reports.
The book includes testimonies from ex-followers of the sect and police involved in investigating it….

An extract from the book reads:
“The monotony would suddenly be broken by wild outbursts of punishment and violent anger.
“The children never knew exactly how to escape punishment because the rules changed all the time….

“Compliance and silence became important to them, to save themselves.
“They learned to be helpless, while all the adults had absolute power.”
Allegations surrounding the cult include strict discipline that included beatings and a lack of food.
The children were reportedly denied access to the outside world and allegedly doped up with psychiatric drugs including LSD…..

About 350 victims have reported child sexual abuse within UK football clubs, police chiefs have said.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said a “significant number of calls” had been received after several former players alleged past abuse by coaches.

Its figures are also based on details from existing investigations as well as referrals from a new NSPCC helpline.

Greater Manchester Police said it was investigating reports from 35 people, and had identified 10 suspects.

Assistant Chief Constable Debbie Ford said the force had received calls on a daily basis from victims as well as people with concerns….

What began as a harrowing account of child abuse suffered by a former professional English soccer player last month has lifted the lid on what could be one of the worst pedophile scandals Britain has ever known…..

The allegations of child sex abuse in English soccer from the 1970s through to the 1990s has shocked Britain and led to deep soul-searching in the game amid fears hundreds of young boys might have been involved.

In a sign of how widespread the abuse might have been, British police said on Thursday that about 350 victims had come forward to report sexual abuse within soccer clubs and indicated the number was likely to rise.

Britons are still reeling from another massive pedophile scandal involving one of their most-loved celebrities, Jimmy Savile, a cigar-chomping BBC television star who abused hundreds of youngsters over six decades.

Savile used his fame to gain access to children and then cow them into silence. His crimes did not come to light until his death aged 84 in 2011.

“It is a sickeningly familiar tale,” an editorial in the Sunday Observer said. “Report after report has revealed how institution after institution – the Catholic church, the BBC, the National Health Service, councils acting in loco parentis for children in care – have chosen to look the other way when signs emerged of child abuse within their walls.” ….

Brian Hubner, acquisitions and access archivist with the University of Manitoba, is pictured with material from the fonds of Lynne Moss Sharman, an activist and social worker.

In trying to comprehend violence against women, child abuse and social injustice, one woman’s archival collection may help communities gain greater insight.

The University of Manitoba’s Archives and Special Collections recently acquired the clippings, photographs, journals, and documents compiled by Lynne Moss Sharman dating back to the 1970s and gathered over the past three decades.

The fonds explore topics ranging from missing and murdered Indigenous women, child abuse and foster care, prison deaths, and community action on issues.

According to Brian Hubner, acquisitions and access archivist with the university, the impetus for Sharman’s documentation began with her research into mind control experiments and abuse performed on children. Sharman claimed to be a survivor of experiments and government-sanctioned child abuse. She died in March 2014 at the age of 66.

“She was initially interested in medical experiments,” Hubner said. “Cold War medical experiments were done on her as a child and she was able to prove that. She reached out to other people who were victims of that, and that was really the origin of her research and her collecting.”

Sharman, an activist, social worker and artist from Thunder Bay, Ont., used the collection as a research bank of material, Hubner said. Sharman carefully curated the collection, with sections of the archive focused on the Pickton trials, the Highway of Tears, individual cases of missing and murdered women, and the media coverage that framed it all. The Stone Angels was formed in Thunder Bay in 1993. I had been in therapy myself for quite a long time, and began to come in contact with other survivors of cult ritual abuse at that point, and was able to speak with over sixty adult survivors of ritual cult abuse. Many of them are from Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario, but a great number of them had moved here from other cities in the country. There was a great need to begin asking for services to be provided for survivors, and we began producing The Stone Angels Journal in 1993 with Volume 1 of survivors’ writings and drawings, and I have just been working on completing Volume 6b on Mind Control In The Modern Age. We essentially began bringing cult ritual abuse to light and that progressed, as we began to hear more from survivors, into the dialogue about the mind control experimentation that had in fact been going on all over the country.

FBI Unlikely to Proceed with Brad Pitt Child Abuse Investigation, Source Says

The FBI is unlikely to proceed with an investigation into the allegations of child abuse against Brad Pitt, a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE.

Pitt, 52, is accused of being “verbally abusive” and getting “physical” with son Maddox, 15, while he and wife Angelina Jolie were returning from France to their L.A. home on a private plane on Sept. 14.

An investigation into the alleged incident has been launched by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services after it was reported anonymously. It is ongoing. The case was also referred to the FBI under special aircraft jurisdiction, as the incident occurred mid-flight.

A source with knowledge of the situation previously told PEOPLE that Pitt did not strike Maddox but rather, “made contact” with him “in the shoulder area.”

“There was absolutely no physical injury to him,” the source explained.

Pitt was allegedly drunk, and arguing with Jolie. The source told PEOPLE, “There was a parent-child argument which was not handled in the right way and escalated more than it should have.”….
