‘Craigslist Killers’ Miranda and Elytte Barbour Sentenced to Life in Prison By Associated Press 09/18/2014
A newlywed couple whose Craigslist ad lured a stranger to his death were sentenced Thursday to life in prison without parole by a judge who said their “permanent removal” from society is appropriate.
Neither 19-year-old Miranda Barbour nor her 22-year-old husband, Elytte, displayed emotion as they sat with their lawyers in the Sunbury, Pennsylvania, courtroom while some of the victim’s relatives described the grief and pain they have experienced since the Nov. 11 murder….
The couple pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence, in a plea deal that ruled out the death penalty….
In April, Miranda Barbour gained some notoriety when she claimed in an interview with the Sunbury newspaper, The Daily Item, that she had killed at least 22 other people in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California over six years as part of her involvement in a satanic cult.
Police said they couldn’t substantiate her claims. But in a Monday telephone interview with The Daily Item from Muncy State Prison, Miranda Barbour stood by her confession to multiple murders…. http://www.people.com/article/craigslist-killers-sentenced-life-in-prison
Grandfather guns down six grandchildren and his daughter in Florida trailer home
Sep 18th 2014 By RYAN GORMAN
Six children and two adults, including the shooter, are dead after a mass shooting in Florida, authorities said.
Grandfather Don Spirit, 51, reportedly gunned down his adult daughter and her six children inside his Bell home, Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert Schultz said in a Thursday evening press conference. Local media is reporting the other adult victim is 28-year-old Sarah Spirit, but he declined to confirm….
The Thursday afternoon incident began as a domestic dispute, but it is not known what triggered the confrontation. Also not clear is what type of gun was used in the mass shooting.
“It started out as a family dispute and escalated,” a law enforcement source previously told AOL News.
Donald Spirit has a criminal record, Schultz said, but declined to confirm his previous charges.
The gunman reportedly pleaded guilty to to shooting his eight-year-old son in in a 2003 hunting accident. He was released from prison in 2006, corrections records showed….
Other charges include possession, depriving a child of food/shelter and accidental death, records reportedly show.
Methamphetamine is also reportedly “a problem” in the trailer home where Donald Spirit lives…. http://www.aol.com/article/2014/09/18/mass-shooting-florida-six-children-eight-people-dead/20964648/

Satanic Craigslist Killers Dodge Death Penalty for Man’s Vicious Murder
By Dominic Gover IB Times – Wed, Aug 27, 2014
A young married couple who killed a man who answered their Craigslist advert, and then claimed more victims, have dodged the death penalty for murder.
Miranda Barbour, 19 and Elytte Barbour, 22, admitted the murdered of Troy LaFerrara in Pennsylvania, United States, last year.
Forty-two year-old LaFerrara was stabbed and strangled by the couple when he met them in a car, after making contact on the popular website Craigslist.
Both Barbours pleaded guilty to murder, meaning they will not face a death sentence for the crime. The case saw them labelled the ‘Craigslist Killers’….
Police documents stated Elytte hid beneath a blanket in a car and then pounced upon LaFerrara when Miranda gave him a signal. She stabbed him repeatedly while Elytte strangled him from the back seat.
Following her arrest and charge for the murder of LaFerra, Miranda claimed to have killed 22 more victims and dumped their body parts in locations close to a venue where she previously worked as a go-go dancer.
Miranda said the alleged killing spree was motivated by her beliefs in Satanism. She also said her alleged victims were men who had “deserved it”.
Craigslist Killers: Satanic murder married couple lure man to death with sex ad on website

Troy LaFerrara, 42, was stabbed and strangled to death by 19-year-old Miranda Barbour and her husband, Elytte Barbour, 22, in Pennsylvania
A satanic teen killer and her husband have avoided the death penalty after they pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a married man whom she lured to his death using the Internet.
Miranda Barbour, 19, and Elytte Barbour, 22, had previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges that carried a possible death penalty upon conviction.
Following her arrest the 19-year-old boasted from her prison cell on Valentine’s Day she had killed at least 22 other people over six years in a cross-country murder spree motivated by her satanic cult beliefs.
She said she dumped body parts in Big Lake, Alaska, and also in Mexico Beach, Florida where she worked as a 15-year-old lap dancer but police have failed to find any victims….
This culture of silence and denial around child abuse must end
I know from my own experience how difficult it is for victims to speak up, so when they do it is vital that we listen, believe and treat them with respect
James Rhodes theguardian.com, Thursday 28 August 2014
Rotherham stands apart for many reasons: the sheer number of perpetrators; the sheer numbers involved (some survivors, some, sadly, inevitably victims) – 1,400 conservatively estimated – the contents of two state secondary schools or 127 school football teams. But there is a more devastating reason it stands alone: the resounding silence. The countless children who were brave enough to come forward at the time and afterwards, who were disbelieved, punished, mocked, accused and summarily dismissed.
We are told to keep quiet from the earliest, pre-verbal stages of life. Children should be seen, not heard. Don’t answer back. You have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Don’t speak until spoken to. Put up and shut up.
And then a child, doused with petrol and threatened to be set alight, gang-raped and forced to watch others suffer the same, digs deep down and somehow finds the extraordinary courage to stand up and say “this happened to me”. She risks the all-encompassing shame, the reliving and recounting of unimaginable horrors, the video evidence, diagrams of who did what and where, being questioned repeatedly by adults trying to pick holes in her story, the blame, recrimination, taunts, insults; the final, ghastly ripping of the child out of a child. She does it anyway.
I didn’t. I wasn’t that brave. I waited 25 years before going through all that. I was finally heard and believed, and the police tracked down and charged the teacher who raped me. But pick any one of those 1,400 children and look at their experience of the aftermath of abuse and hang your heads in shame.
There is a large section of society for whom talking about child abuse is in itself as bad as child abuse. We are complicit in the shaming, silencing, blaming and castigating of those who are our most defenceless and vulnerable, and it must not, can not, should not stand any longer….
Abuse thrives on silence. It exists because those who have endured it believe at a cellular level that they are in the wrong. They believe they are inherently evil. They believe it is their fault. Is that any surprise given the monstrosity of the Rotherham case?
‘Culture of denial’ leaving UK children at risk of serious abuse
Deputy children’s commissioner Sue Berelowitz says, despite Rotherham and gang violence cases elsewhere, police and authorities are practising ‘wilful blindness’
Randeep Ramesh The Guardian, Wednesday 27 August 2014
Children are at risk of serious abuse across England because of a culture of “wilful blindness” about the scale and prevalence of sexual exploitation across swaths of local government and in police forces, the deputy children’s commissioner warns.
In a highly critical interview given in the aftermath of the Rotherham abuse inquiry, which concluded that hundreds of children may have been abused there over a 16-year period, Sue Berelowitz said she had been “aghast” at the examples of obvious errors and poor practice she found.
Berelowitz told the Guardian she had discovered that police and council officers were in some cases still either looking the other way, not asking questions or claiming abuse was confined to a certain ethnic group – such as Asian men – or a particular social class….
Because the subject matter is uncomfortable and scrutiny damaging, Berelowitz added that there was a “culture of denial” that had been exposed by Prof Alexis Jay’s inquiry into the handling of child abuse in Rotherham. It found at least 1,400 children were sexually exploited by predominantly Asian criminal gangs between 1997 and 2013….

Hearing in Barbour case to compel discovery evidence
By Mark Gilger March 4, 2014
SUNBURY – A hearing will be held 9:15 a.m. April 1 on a motion filed by Miranda Barbour’s attorney to compel discovery evidence from the district attorney’s office in a murder case that has drawn international attention.
In a related order issued Friday, Northumerland County Judge Charles Saylor granted permission to the commonwealth to preserve hard drives from Troy LaFerrara’s computer and his mother’s computer seized by police upon the execution of a search warrant.
LaFerrara was found stabbed to death in a yard in Sunbury in November. Miranda Barbour, 19, and her 22-year-old husband, Elytte Barbour, are charged with homicide in the Port Trevorton man’s death.
Saylor said preserving the hard drives will allow the defense attorneys or an expert of their choosing to examine them in the future….
During last week’s prison board meeting, Johnson said the international attention about Barbour’s claim to The Daily Item that she killed more than 22 people has disrupted security and efficiency at the prison, which among other issues, prompted her transfer.

CARY, N.C…..Police said Miranda told them she met LaFerrara on Craigslist and after an arranged meeting, the engineer began to grope her, so she pulled a knife from between the seats of her Honda CRV and began to stab him before blacking out.
LaFerrara was knifed at least 20 times, police said….
She went on to discuss her daughter’s childhood.
“(Miranda) ran away from home when she was 12,” Dean said. Her daughter grew up in Alaska and has an older sister, Dean said.
“(Miranda) got hooked up with a guy (in Alaska) who was into satanic stuff, and when she came home one day, she told me that he owns her now.”
The man’s name was Forrest, Dean said.
“I asked her what she was talking about, and she told me that this man owns her and she has to do whatever he says,” Dean said. “She said he branded her by carving a swastika on the back of her neck and his name on her thigh.
“She told me she was out prostituting at 12 years old and that this man was her ruler.”….
“I told (Miranda) when she was in Alaska, she needed to stop all of this and get away from these (satanic) people,” Dean said. “She was involved in this satanic stuff and this man (Forrest) still has a hold on her. It’s heart-breaking.”
One day Miranda came home and said she wanted to change her life, so Dean sent her to North Carolina to live with Miranda’s uncle, Arlin Fletcher….
Miranda told her mother that Elytte became engaged in the satanic world after Miranda and Elytte became romantically involved.
“She told me he liked it, but she said, ‘Mom, I can’t put him on the panel because Forrest won’t let me.’”
Dean didn’t know what the panel meant. She said she knows her daughter participated in satanic rituals, but was unsure about the nature of them.
“I have no idea,” she said. “I know if you talk to Elf, he will say she (Miranda) killed plenty of times before, but I just don’t know. I asked her and she said ‘Never.’”
Elytte told The Daily Item on Dec. 4 that the father of Miranda’s child was dead. He wouldn’t get into details that day.
“He is not dead,” Dean said. “But we don’t know who the father is. It could be one of several people.”…. http://www.dailyitem.com/0100_news/x1280779959/Lockup-to-Miranda-s-mom-You-can-t-visit
Is 19-Year-Old Miranda Barbour Really a Mass Murderer?
By Robert Kolker 2/27/14
This winter, America discovered a new Craigslist killer—a 19-year-old woman named Miranda Barbour, arrested in December along with her husband, Elytte Barbour, for the murder of a 42-year-old man named Troy LaFerrara, whom they lured in with a Craigslist sex ad. Now in jail awaiting trial, Barbour told a reporter in January that she’s killed dozens of others — she says she “stopped counting” at 22 — all as part of a Satanic cult.
To be sure, there is a lot to take in at once with Barbour’s story, much of which inverts the serial-killer archetype as we’ve come to understand it: She’s female and a teenager, and her story involves sexual abuse, Satanism, institutionalization, drug addiction, mental illness, bad boyfriends, and a two-year-old child now out of her custody. Based on the rough outlines of Barbour’s biography, she would have had to have started around age 13 to do what she claims to have done. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/02/miranda-barbour-really-a-mass-murderer.html

Panel Charged With Eliminating Child Abuse Deaths
by February 25, 2014
A federal commission to prevent children’s deaths from abuse and neglect held its first meeting on Monday. Figuring out the extent of the problem is just one challenge facing the new commission.
RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:
About 1700 children die in the U.S. each year as the result of abuse and neglect. At least that’s the official count. Many experts think the real number is much higher. Figuring out the extent of the problem is just one challenge facing a new commission set up to help eliminate such deaths. The panel held its first meeting yesterday in Washington, D.C….
Part Four: From care to where? Early brain development susceptible to neglect, abuse
Emotional, physical trauma in childhood can cause delays in brain maturation, say experts
By Tracy Sherlock, Vancouver Sun February 25, 2014
The human brain is not fully developed until about age 25. Before that, young people can be impulsive, make poor decisions, and are often more susceptible to addictions.
Psychiatrists have a phrase for this stage of reasoning: “Hyperrational thinking.”
It is a tendency to focus on the upside of situations and ignore risks, says Daniel J. Siegel, a psychiatry professor at the University of California, Los Angeles school of medicine….
When a young person has been neglected, abused, or has no secure attachments, brain development may be compromised, Siegel said.
Children in government care have often been neglected or abused, making them more vulnerable to developmental delays and mental health problems….
“Young people who have experienced early emotional or physical trauma may suffer from delays in brain maturation, leaving them ‘behind’ in brain development during adolescence,” states a report called The Adolescent Brain by the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, an American foundation that works to help former foster kids transition to independence. “When stressful events or traumatic experiences occur, children, youth, and adults may temporarily regress to an earlier developmental stage or accomplishment.”
The experts agree that stress during childhood not only physically compromises brain development, it also has far-reaching effects on mental health that can be compounded by things like poverty or living in a chaotic home. Put together, adverse childhood experiences like neglect and abuse, have long-term effects that spill over into physical health….
Elytte Barbour to return to county prison; Miranda stays at SCI-Muncy
By Justin Strawser
February 26, 2014
SUNBURY – Accused killer Miranda Barbour will remain at State Correctional Institution-Muncy (SCI-Muncy) for the time being, but her husband, Elytte, will be moved to Northumberland County Prison….
The international attention around Barbour’s claim to The Daily Item that she killed more than 22 people has disrupted security and efficiency at the prison, Johnson said. “It made it very, very difficult to focus on all the issues of all the inmates,” Johnson said. Nineteen-year-old Miranda Barbour and 22-year-old Elytte Barbour are charged in the Nov. 11 slaying of Troy LaFerrara in Sunbury….

Miranda’s dad supports daughter’s execution if verdict is guilty By Francis Scarcella The Daily Item February 19, 2014
SUNBURY — If Miranda Barbour is convicted in the murder of Troy LaFerrara and sentenced to death, Sonny Dean says he will hold the hand of LaFerrara’s widow as his daughter is executed.
Dean on Wednesday also said he believes his daughter may have been involved in one murder other than her alleged participation in the slaying of LaFerrara, the 42-year-old Port Trevorton resident who was fatally stabbed Nov. 11 in Sunbury.
Sunbury police accuse Barbour, 19, and her husband, Elytte, 22, in the killing.
Dean, speaking to the media for the first time since his daughter was arrested Dec. 3 in connection with the murder, said Miranda was a heroin addict, is the most manipulative person he knows and is a liar.
His daughter is not, he believes, a mass murderer….
The father of Barbour’s child, also a satanist, was murdered, she said during the jailhouse interview.
“I didn’t kill him,” Barbour said. “But I know all about it.”….
Dean did not dispute Miranda’s claim of being a satanist.
“Satanism is real,” he said. “It is a growing cult that will go to great lengths to seize our children. You don’t have to be affiliated with the ‘Church of Satan’ to worship him.”….
Miranda Barbour’s Husband: ‘Who’s to Say’ If She’s a Serial Killer? By Steve Helling 02/20/2014
….Meanwhile, police and FBI agents are scouring five states to find more possible victims of the petite 19-year-old mother. So far, there have been no results. “Investigators are looking into a couple of cases, but have not connected anything else to Miranda Barbour,” an FBI source tells PEOPLE. “We don’t have proof that she committed other murders.”
….Some of Miranda Barbour’s claims seem too outrageous to be true. In her jailhouse interview, she said she was a member of a Satanic cult and had a murderous alter ego named “Super Miranda.” She also reportedly admitted to having a favorite knife that had notches on it, one for each victim. “There might be a knife with notches,” the FBI source tells PEOPLE, “but that proves nothing. We need solid evidence.”
So is Barbour a serial killer? Law enforcement officials in Alaska, North Carolina and Pennsylvania have found no evidence of other murders. Why would she lie?
“Attention. Psychosis. Strategy,” says the FBI source. “Maybe she wants to look crazy as a way to gain sympathy. On the other hand, she may have killed before. We need to check it out.”

….Barbour met her husband after they joined the Satanist cult which has dominated her life and allegedly led to her first killing at the tender age of 13.
She traces her murderous desires back to the age of four when she was molested by an uncle.
Her mother Elizabeth Dean, 41, confirms that her sister’s husband was sentenced to 14 years in prison for child sex abuse. “It was bad,” says Dean. “I never let her stay anywhere except for my sister’s house and I was devastated when I found out.”
Nine tormented years later, Barbour joined a Satanic cult in Alaska, where her family was living and was quickly inducted into a life of murder.
The cult leader took Barbour along to meet a man who owed him money, she recalls.
“It was in an alley and he shot him,” says Barbour. “Then he said to me that it was my turn to shoot him. I hate guns. I don’t use guns. I couldn’t do it.
“So he came behind me and he took his hands and put them on top of mine and we pulled the trigger. And from there I just continued to kill.”….
And the newlyweds decided to celebrate their third week’s anniversary by murdering someone together.
“He is proud of what he did,” she says. “I will always love him.”….
She shows no remorse and, against her lawyer’s advice, wants to come clean and stop living a lie.
“By no means is this a way to glorify it or get attention,” she says. “I feel it is time to get all of this out. I don’t care if people believe me. I just want to get it out.”

Barbour body count at 22?
By Francis Scarcella The Daily Item
February 15, 2014
SUNBURY — Nineteen-year-old satanist Miranda Barbour admits to killing Troy LaFerrara of Port Trevorton. In a prison interview Friday night, she said that she considered sparing his life until he said the wrong thing. She also said LaFerrara was one of dozens of such victims she killed in the past six years.
Barbour, with her husband, Elytte Barbour, 22, of Selinsgrove, has been charged by Sunbury police in the Nov. 11 fatal knifing of LaFerrara. She requested an interview that was recorded by the Northumberland County Prison on Friday night.
While she offered scant details of her participation in slayings in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California, city police confirmed Saturday they had been working, prior to her revelations Friday night, with investigators from other states and the FBI about Miranda Barbour’s possible connection to other killings. The majority of her murders, she said, took place in Alaska….
She wants to plead guilty to LaFerrara’s murder, and said she is ready to speak with police about her other victims.
“I can pinpoint on a map where you can find them,” she said….
Miranda Barbour said she doesn’t care whether people believe her, that she wanted to tell her story to The Daily Item because she wanted to come clean and stop living a lie. She said she felt no remorse for her victims and said she killed only “bad people,” a belief she traced through a troubled childhood.
She said she was sexually molested at age 4 and was introduced to murder at 13, literally in the hands of a man who led her to satanism — beliefs that she said she held at the time of the LaFerrara homicide.
“I feel it is time to get all of this out,” she said. “I don’t care if people believe me. I just want to get it out.”
Suspect: I joined satanic cult
Miranda said when she was 4, she was sexually molested by a relative.
Elizabeth Dean, Miranda’s mother, confirmed Saturday that her sister’s husband was later arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a minor and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
“It was bad,” Dean said. “I never let (her) stay anywhere except for my sister’s house, and I was devastated when I found out.”
Nine years later, Miranda joined a satanic cult in Alaska. Soon after, Miranda said, she had her first experience in murder.
Barbour said she went with the leader of the satanic cult to meet a man who owed the cult leader money.
“It was in an alley and he (the cult leader) shot him,” she said, declining to identify the cult leader.
“Then he said to me that it was my turn to shoot him. I hate guns. I don’t use guns. I couldn’t do it, so he came behind me and he took his hands and put them on top of mine and we pulled the trigger. And then from there I just continued to kill.”
While in the satanic cult, Miranda became pregnant. The cult did not want her to have the baby, so, she said, members tied her to a bed, gave her drugs and she had an “in-house abortion.”
However, her mother on Saturday said that when Miranda told her about the abortion, she took her daughter to a doctor who said there were no signs of an ended pregnancy.
Miranda said she spent the next three years in Alaska, continuing in the satanic cult and participating in several murders.
“I wasn’t always there (mentally),” she said, adding that she had begun to use drugs. “I knew something was bad inside me and the satanic beliefs brought it out. I embraced it.”….
The Thrill of the Kill- Chilling Interview
The case of the accused thrill killers takes a shocking twist. Investigators say a woman helped her newlywed husband kill a man they met on Craigslist … Now, in an interview with a local newspaper Miranda Barbour admits to that murder and many other killings across the country.
Eyewitness News Reporter Valerie Tysanner talked with Daily Item Reporter, Francis Scarcella about the interview.
Elytte Barbour Responds to His Wife’s Chilling Interview
Sunbury, Northumberland County- “I plead the Fifth…” That’s what accused Craigslist thrill killer Elytte Barbour said with a half smile when asked Monday what he thought about his wife, Miranda Barbour’s claim that she’s killed 22 people as part of a satanic cult.
He was heading into a hearing when he started talking when Eyewitness News and other reporters began asking questions..
Eyewitness News-reporters: Do you think she actually killed 22 people? Barbour: Who’s to say.
Eyewitness News-reporters : Do you think she’s lying? Barbour: I didn’t say that.
Eyewitness News-reporters : Do you think she’s telling the truth? Barbour: Don’t put words in my mouth.
Troopers: No evidence Miranda Barbour linked to Alaska killings By MICHELLE THERIAULT BOOTS

There’s no evidence that a self-proclaimed satanist serial killer, who claims to have victims in Alaska, is actually connected to any unsolved murders here, Alaska State Troopers said in a statement Tuesday.
“At this time the Alaska State Troopers are not aware of any information — beyond Barbour’s comments quoted in the press — or evidence that would implicate Barbour with a homicide committed in Alaska,” AST spokeswoman Megan Peters wrote in an email Tuesday.

Officials of the fast-growing University of Mississippi Medical Center had planned to build a parking garage east of the dental school, where a grove of trees now sits.
But testing in the area revealed 1,000 bodies, believed to have been patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum a century ago.
