Church of England downplayed extent of child abuse allegations to protect its reputation, report finds
Olivia Rudgard, Religious Affairs Correspondent
22 June 2018
The Church of England disregarded dozens of allegations in its inquiry into child sexual abuse and then downplayed the issue to protect its reputation, a critical report has found.
A report by former Barnardo’s chief executive Sir Roger Singleton found that close to 100 cases were whittled down to just a handful for a review released in 2010.
Inconsistent and overly specific criteria reduced the number of cases they reported for the Past Cases Review, leading it to conclude after examining 40,000 files that just 13 cases of alleged child sexual abuse merited formal action.
Sir Roger, who was commissioned to complete an inquiry into the review, said he believed the Church “downplayed” the issue in public statements to avoid reputational damage.
However, he also said he found “no evidence whatsoever of a deliberate attempt to mislead” or that anyone broke the law.
“In the public statement that it issued reporting on the review, [the Church] rather failed to give a comprehensive picture of the concerns that existed,” he said.
“It narrowed down the definitions of who had actually been responsible for abuse by limiting it to just new cases and cases where the Church took formal action. This had the impact of reducing the numbers from probably nearer 100 to just two which appeared in the public statements.”

Paedophile cults, parenting and multiple personalities: A mother who’s experienced it all
By Hattie Gladwell
Friday 22 Jun 2018
Karen*, a mother-of-three in her sixties, lives with dissociative identity disorder (DID), which used to be known as ‘multiple personality disorder’.
It was triggered during her childhood by enduring extreme ritual abuse, inflicted on her by a group of paedophiles. Starting even before she could speak, she underwent emotional, physical and sexual abuse of the most horrific kinds imaginable.
This ‘cult’ Karen describes as a paedophile ring caused Karen to start to disassociate to try and cope with the horrendous pain and trauma inflicted on her as a child.
It started when she was a one-year-old and carried on until she was 16. She now says that she has ‘many parts’.
When the abuse finally stopped after her childhood, the past was ‘barricaded safely away for over 20 years’ because of her ‘alters’ or ‘parts’, the terms used for alternate identities.
DID’s symptoms mean you experience severe changes in your identity, with your psyche creating various personalities to help you cope with traumatic events.
The identity states may come across as different ages and genders, and you may feel you have one ‘main’ part of your identity that feels most like ‘you’ – which some people call the host identity.
A person living with DID may not have control over the different parts when an identity takes over and they may even suffer from amnesia which means you don’t remember what happens when another part of your identity is in control….
The emotional, sexual and physical abuse took many forms, from emotional manipulation and controlling behaviour to rape and beatings.
Karen was abused by a pseudo-cult claiming to be of Christian religion as justification. Heartbreakingly, she also suffered abuse outside of the cult, from people within her family….

Havant sexual abuse survivor calls for more support: ‘There is life after abuse’
Tamara Siddiqui Wednesday 27 June 2018
A WOMAN who endured almost 20 years of emotional, sexual and physical abuse is raising awareness about the lack of help available for survivors of such terrible ordeals.
Pauline Sharp, 55, was abused by her parents at her childhood home in Stubbington, and now lives with a number of health issues including chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)….
Pauline, who lives in Havant, said: ‘I’m a survivor of ritual abuse which started at the age of three and carried on until I was about 22. I got told I was chosen, there to serve, and I should be thankful.
‘The impact of child sexual abuse on me and all survivors is life-long.
‘Over the years I have abused my own body, because I was violated, raped, and indoctrinated for so long, told I was evil and worth nothing, so I believed it.
‘I would inflict pain on myself, self-harm and overeat, just so I could mask the pain inflicted on me. As well as chronic PTSD I have short-term memory loss caused by the trauma, anxiety, disassociation, flashbacks and nightmares.’….
After also being taken elsewhere so others could inflict abuse on her, Pauline escaped her parents’ control aged 22 for a job as a nanny in Canada.
She described using her once 24-stone weight as a disguise that kept her safe.
Pauline, who was hospitalised twice in 2007, added: ‘I only got the right help after my second breakdown and it took two years, but I’m lucky I got it because some places have it, some don’t.
‘Survivors of abuse have suffered so much as children and as adults their needs deserve to be met with specialist long-term trauma-based help.
‘Only if a survivor can access the right support can they even begin to recover.
‘I am silent no more and I want to raise awareness, much-needed funds, and show other survivors there is love, laughter and life after abuse….

Judge refuses to dismiss lawsuit accusing FLDS of sexually abusing young girls under guise of religion By Michael Rinker July 3, 2018
ST. GEORGE — A Utah judge last week denied a defendant’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging ritualistic sex abuse of young girls by former leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints….
The lawsuit accuses high-ranking FLDS leaders of carrying out a “calculated plan” of ritualistic sex abuse involving girls as young as 8 years old.
In addition to the UEP Trust, other defendants include former FLDS President Warren Jeffs, his brothers Lyle Jeffs and Seth Jeffs, former FLDS leader Wendell Nielsen and the FLDS church.
In 2005, a Utah judge appointed a special fiduciary to take over the UEP Trust in response to accusations that Warren Jeffs and other FLDS leaders mismanaged it.
The responsibility of the special fiduciary has since been reduced, and the trust is now largely run by a court-appointed board of trustees
Since the 2005 intervention, communal property once controlled by the church in Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale has been subdivided and farms and other businesses have been claimed by the trust as taxes went unpaid. It has been overseeing distribution of the property.
As part of their FLDS beliefs, sex between underage girls and priesthood leaders took place, the lawsuit alleges. After President Rulon T. Jeffs suffered a stroke in August 1998, much of his power and authority was delegated to his son Warren Jeffs, who began a new practice involving ritualistic sexual intercourse with young girls in the FLDS temple and other FLDS properties.
“Sex with girls, ages eight to 14 years old, was initiated by Warren Jeffs,” the lawsuit alleges, “along with leadership of UEP Trust and the FLDS Church, including the Twelve Apostles of the Church engaging in and witnessing the sexual relations between Warren S. Jeffs, Lyle Jeffs, Seth Jeffs and Wendell LeRoy Nielsen and other John Does viewing, watching, taping, participating in and documenting these sexual encounters with underage girls.”….
“Warren S. Jeffs told (R.H.) that if she told anyone of these encounters, God would destroy her and her family immediately,” the lawsuit states. He also reportedly said that if she cried during the ritual, “God would punish her.”
The rituals reportedly occurred five to six times a week until R.H. turned 12. When she was 14 years old, the lawsuit alleges, she was required to witness and document other girls’ ritualistic abuse with church leaders…..

Dissociative Identity Disorder: What it’s like to live with multiple personalities
By Tracey Shelton 30 Jun 2018
Ms Tulloch has dissociative identity disorder (DID), also known as multiple personality disorder. She has more than 100 “parts”, each with their own ages, abilities, likes and characteristics.
Psychological studies and accounts of multiplicity have been around for centuries, and DID has been included in the official psychiatry manual since 1980. But it still remains controversial.
In almost every studied case, the cause can be traced back to extreme and ongoing trauma during childhood. For Ms Tulloch, it was repeated sexual abuse perpetrated by neighbours that began when she was three years old.
Psychiatrist Dr Warwick Middleton, one of Australia’s leading experts in dissociative disorders, describes it as “compartmentalisation” or a complex coping system that develops in a young mind unable to deal with the abuse inflicted on them by those they depend on for survival.
In her definitive book Trauma and Recovery, Judith Herman said the only weapon of survival for a child trapped in an abusive environment are “psychological defences” and this forces the development of “extraordinary capacities, both creative and destructive”.
“Repeated trauma in adult life erodes the structure of the personality already formed,” she writes, “but repeated trauma in childhood forms and deforms the personality.”….
On the outside, her family were devout Baptist Christians, but behind the scenes her memories include ritual abuse by groups of adults, and horrific sexual “punishments” at home, mostly at the hands of her grandfather, for crimes as small as “touching my grandmother’s special china plates”.
The abuse resulted in numerous medical issues that never seemed to raise an eyebrow at the doctor’s clinic.
Di — who went on to become a nurse, a mother and now a grandmother — is telling her story in the hopes of raising awareness not to ignore the signs that a child may be experiencing abuse at home, even in families that appear to be respected members of the community…..

Cardinal George Pell, a senior adviser to Pope Francis and the third-ranking official in the Holy See, is taking leave from the Vatican to fight historical sexual assault charges in his home country of Australia.
The case is the latest black mark against the Catholic Church, which has been reeling from sexual abuse scandals across several countries that date back decades. It could also have ramifications for Pope Francis, who counts Pell among his closest aides.
Australian police have not released a detailed list of charges against Pell and didn’t disclose any information about alleged victims, saying only that there were multiple charges and “multiple complainants.” ….
“I’m innocent of these charges, they are false,” Pell said. “The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me.”….
Pell has previously denied covering up abuse committed by priests when he served as the Archbishop of Melbourne from 1996 to 2001. But he acknowledged his predecessor, Archbishop Frank Little, now deceased, had destroyed documents to protect priests.
A 2013 Australian government inquiry, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, found that 7% of priests in Australia were accused of abusing children, from 1950 until 2015. At least 1,880 alleged perpetrators were identified and 4,444 victims came forward…..
In the United States, analysis of information on 110,000 priests who served the Church between 1950 and 2002 found that 4% of them had been accused of abuse…..

Church Of England ‘Colluded And Concealed’ Bishop’s Sex Abuse, Leader Says
June 22, 2017 Colin Dwyer
When faced with allegations of sex abuse against one of its bishops, the Church of England “colluded and concealed rather than seeking to help those who were brave enough to come forward,” the church’s leader acknowledged Thursday.
“For the survivors who were brave enough to share their story and bring Peter Ball to justice, I once again offer an unreserved apology,” Justin Welby, archbishop of Canterbury, said in a statement. “There are no excuses whatsoever for what took place and the systemic abuse of trust perpetrated by Peter Ball over decades.”
Welby was responding to the findings of an independent investigation into how the church handled the allegations against Ball, a former bishop who pleaded guilty in 2015 to indecent assault against young men. That report, also released Thursday, found that Ball “abused many boys and men over a period of twenty years or more.”
“That is shocking in itself but is compounded by the failure of the Church to respond appropriately to his misconduct, again over a period of many years,” Moira Gibb, who led the investigation, said in the report. “Ball’s priority was to protect and promote himself and he maligned the abused. The Church colluded with that rather than seeking to help those he had harmed, or assuring itself of the safety of others.”….

Top Movies about Cults You Can Watch on Netflix: “Holy Hell,” “Deprogrammed,” “Children of God,” “Colonia”
Charisse Van Horn April 5, 2017
Netflix provides plenty of movie and television watching experiences, but if you’re interested in learning about cults, you might find some of these movies make a great addition to your list. These include Holy Hell, Deprogrammed, Children of God, and Colonia.
A cult if often defined as an organization or group led by a leader that demands complete and total submission while discouraging freedom of thought and the expression of individualism. A form of mind control, cults frequently demand uniformity and submission and will use subversive techniques to ensure everyone obeys the group’s leader. While there are many different cults, most groups share similar traits. You can learn about cults and the tactics they use at the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM) Cults, An Outline Analysis. This is not a secular site, but the explanation of a cult is applicable to all.
First and foremost, in order to ensure that individuality is suppressed, mind-control methods are utilized to prevent free will, free thinking, creative ideas, and the use of logic and reasoning. One of the most common ways to suppress individuality is by breaking off relationships with friends and family members, changing the names of members and referring to them by a new name, and forcing them to memorize the group’s teachings that originate with the cult leader.
Many cults operate on hierarchy type systems within the group that essentially provide control over the group. The leader will promote group members to positions where they are monitoring the cult members behavior and looking for any sign that a member is not following the leader’s orders. Punishments are often used to bring members who exhibit their own personality traits back into submission to the group and the leader.
Once a person is involved in a cult it can be difficult to leave and the emotional damage that is done can last a lifetime. Leaving is not an easy process but part of a life-long journey.
The following cult movies on Netflix show what happened inside the destructive group as well as the fight for freedom outside. They are all currently available on Netflix, but movies are always subject to change. The movies tell the stories from real survivors who lived their lives inside the cult, as well as one fictional dramatization based upon accounts of life inside a cult…. http://www.inquisitr.com/4121094/top-movies-about-cults-you-can-watch-on-netflix-holy-hell-deprogrammed-children-of-god-and-colonia/
Claims John Smyth recruited victim – now head of top prep school – to help him carry out beatings
By Rozina Sabur 11 April 2017
A barrister at the centre of a child abuse scandal in the Church of England was assisted by one of his victims, now the headteacher of a top prep school, it has been alleged. John Smyth QC, who was investigated by police over claims he subjected young men to savage sadomasochistic beatings, recruited one of his victims, Simon Doggart, to carry out the abuse the BBC has claimed.
Doggart, who has been the head teacher of Caldicott preparatory school in Buckinghamshire for the last 20 years, was allegedly recruited by Smyth who asked him to administer further beatings to his friends.
There is no suggestion that he has ever harmed any of his pupils at Caldicott Preparatory School. “John Smyth beat me first, appallingly, with his usual force. Then Simon Doggart took over while John watched”, said one victim who wished to be anonymous. “I recall immediately the absolute brutality of his beating – far, far worse than Smyth. There was no discussion, no emotion that I recall, just a fit sports man using all his force. “Then it was over, this was going to be the new regime,” he told the BBC…. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/11/john-smyth-recruited-victim-now-head-top-prep-school-help/

Inquiry chair Lady Smith has said more than 100 locations so far have been identified for investigation, including current and former boarding schools
Tuesday 31 January 2017
More than 60 residential care establishments including several top private schools are being investigated by Scotland’s national child abuse inquiry.
They are among more than 100 locations where the abuse of children is said to have taken place, chair Anne Smith confirmed.
Six boarding schools or former boarding schools, including Fettes college and Gordonstoun, are being investigated. Several faith-based organisations, other major care providers and local authority institutions are also being looked at by inquiry staff.
Lady Smith, a senior judge who was appointed to the role in July, named a list of places being investigated as she provided an update on the inquiry’s progress at a preliminary hearing.
The inquiry is examining historical allegations of the abuse of children in care and has been taking statements from witnesses since last spring….

Archbishop admits Church ‘failed terribly’ over abuse revelations
Cathy Newman Presenter 1 Feb 2017 UK
The Church of England has tonight apologised unreservedly after a Channel 4 News investigation revealed that a prominent Anglican evangelical and former colleague of the Archbishop of Canterbury is alleged to have severely assaulted boys and young men for decades.
The alleged abuse was carried out by prominent QC and part time judge called John Smyth, who was chairman of the Iwerne Trust, a charity closely linked to the church which ran Christian holiday camps for public school students.
The Church admitted that it had “failed terribly”, after this programme learned that the Trust had discovered the alleged abuse in 1982, but failed to report it to the police.
Winchester College, where some of the young men met Smyth, was made aware of the alleged abuse, but also failed to report it to the police at the time. There is no suggestion that any abuse took place at the College or with the knowledge of its staff.
The Archbishop’s apology comes after a six month investigation by Channel 4 News, in which we tracked down and spoke with many of Smyth’s alleged victims. One man told us that he and other boys were beaten so violently by Smyth that they had to wear nappies to staunch the bleeding….
It described what it called the “beatings” of 22 young men.
“The scale and severity of the practice was horrific…8 received about 14 thousand strokes: 2 of them having some 8000 strokes over three years,” the document, written in 1982, noted.
Despite the findings of the report, the Iwerne Trust did not inform the police. Instead, a senior figure in the Iwerne Trust wrote to John Smyth, telling him to leave the country. He went on to live in Zimbabwe, and then South Africa….

LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) –
Two stars of the now canceled reality show “Sons of Guns” have been arrested on child abuse charges.
Warrants were issued Thursday by the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office for the arrest of Kristafor Ford and his wife Stephanie Hayden. According to the arrest warrant from Livingston Parish, Kristafor is accused of hitting a 9-year-old with a leather belt on the child’s lower, right thigh. Reports say there was a large bruise on the child’s thigh and buttocks area.
Ford was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with cruelty to a juvenile.
Stephanie Hayden was arrested Friday and charged with principal to cruelty to a juvenile because she was allegedly in the room when the incident happened….
Investigators are looking into criminal cases against Will Hayden. He is accused of raping and molesting a number of young women.
Hayden’s daughter Stephanie claimed her father touched her inappropriately when she was 12 years old. He has not been charged in that case.
Hayden has been arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated rape and one count of indecent behavior with a juvenile, all separate victims. Two of the rape charges are in East Baton Rouge Parish, the other rape charge and indecent behavior charge is out of Livingston Parish….

Rotherham child abuse was raised ‘at highest level’ 26 October 2014
Child abuse in Rotherham was raised “at the highest level” as far back as 2002 but officials apparently pressured a researcher to change her report.
The then chief constable Mike Hedges and the council’s director of education Di Billups were among those said to have been warned by the researcher.
Documents detailing her concerns, shown to the home affairs select committee in private, have been seen by the BBC.
The researcher said it was “a tragedy” her evidence was not looked at in 2002.
In her report to the committee the researcher, initially employed by the council to investigate prostitution, said she was pressured to present her findings in a way that presented services in Rotherham in “a better light”.
Scale of abuse
The researcher claimed she had “repeatedly” tried to raise concerns at senior levels “in the police force, social care and education”.
The scale of child abuse in Rotherham was not revealed until this year when Professor Alexis Jay’s report found at least 1400 children had been exploited….
Still concerned that children were being abused on a “daily” basis, the researcher submitted some of her evidence to Home Office evaluators.
That evidence is now missing. The researcher claimed there was a “raid” on her office the weekend after she submitted the evidence.
On coming into work, she claimed she found that all of the data relating to the Home Office work had been removed from filing cabinets. Documents on the office computer had been deleted, while others were created detailing the minutes of meetings….

Justin Welby also said there is a ‘significant legacy’ of cases of child abuse within the church which have been ignored and that its failure to hold abusers to account is ‘inexcusable’.
Archbishop Welby made the admissions in a private letter to a mother of three boys who were abused at a Church of England school, reports Exaro, the investigative website.

Victims of Domestic Violence Getting Longer Prison Sentences Than Their Children’s Abusers?
Sunday, 26 October 2014 12:40 By Alyssa Figueroa, AlterNet | Report
….Lindley’s story was reported in a Buzzfeed news investigation which exposed the dangerous outcomes of these “failure to protect” laws. Buzzfeed found 28 mothers and domestic violence victims in 11 states who were sent to prison for at least 10 years for failing to protect their children from abuse:
“Almost half, 13 mothers, were given 20 years or more. In one case, the mother was given a life sentence for failing to protect her son, just like the man who murdered the infant boy. In another, the sentences were effectively the same: The killer got life, and the mother got75 years, of which she must serve at least 63 years and nine months. In yet another, the mother got a longer sentence than the man who raped her son. In one more, a father fractured an infant girl’s toe, femur, and seven ribs and was sentenced to two years; for failing to intervene, the mother got 30.”
Buzzfeed found that at least 29 states have failure-to-protect laws, such as injury to a child “by omission,” by “permitting child abuse” or “enabling child abuse.” Nineteen other states have laws that could also be used to prosecute parents, such as “criminal negligence in the care of a child.” Maximum prison sentences for breaking these laws vary from one year to life. And in some states, they carry the same sentence as child abuse itself.
While these laws are designed to both hold mother and father responsible for protecting their children, the law isn’t applied equally. Buzzfeed found a total 73 cases against mothers, yet only four against fathers. Women commit 34 percent of serious or fatal cases of child abuse.
“Mothers are held to a very different standard,” law professor Kris McDaniel-Miccio said. …

Japanese Wartime Medical Orderly on Army’s Role in Maintaining “Comfort Women” System
Sunday, 26 October 2014 By David McNeill, The Asia-Pacific Journal | Interview and Video
David McNeill introduction, Matsumoto Masayoshi testimony (Japanese and English transcript and video of testimony), translation by Miguel Quintana.
For years, Abe Shinzo, Japan’s prime minister, has been playing with diplomatic fire over a sordid episode of wartime history that has been at the center of a storm of controversy involving Japan, China, Korea and other outposts of Japan’s empire: the herding of thousands of women across Asia into Japanese military brothels. His decision this year to order an investigation into a landmark government apology to the so-called “comfort women” might have helped end the controversy. Instead, it has further ignited it, which may indeed have been Abe’s intention – he has campaigned for nearly two decades to undermine the apology.
The 1993 Kono statement, compiled in consultation with South Korea by Japan’s then chief cabinet secretary Kono Yohei, acknowledged the army’s role in forcing the women into sexual slavery. Nationalists, championed by the Yomiuri, Japan’s most popular newspaper, deny coercion and insist the women voluntarily provided “comfort” to frontline troops. They have repeatedly demanded the withdrawal of the so-called Kono statement, with potentially explosive diplomatic consequences….

Paedophile rock star Ian Watkins will earn more than £150,000 while serving a 29-year jail sentence for child sex offences.
The singer’s conviction forced his former band, the Lostprophets, to break up – and distribute their assets worth more than £700,000, it has been revealed.
Watkins, who is currently jailed in top-security Wakefield prison, is contracted to take £147,497 in the deal.
And music experts claim the convicted molesterer will earn more than £100,000 in royalties during his sentence.
The 36-year-old, from Pontypridd, pleaded guilty to three counts of child sexual assault at a trial in Cardiff Crown Court last month….
Lostprophets were founded in Pontypridd in 1997 and the band sold about 3.5 million albums worldwide.
His former bandmates have turned their back on him – saying they are ‘heartbroken, angry, and disgusted’ at his sex crimes and have urged more of his victims to contact police.

Gang rape, killing of teen in India sparks outrage
January 4, 2014
KOLKATA, India (AP) — The father of a teenage girl who was allegedly gang raped and later died after being set on fire in eastern India is demanding a federal inquiry into the case, which has renewed public outrage over sexual violence in the country.
Hundreds of people protested Friday in the West Bengal city of Kolkata, accusing state authorities of failing to protect the family after the 16-year-old girl went to police in October to report she had been raped twice by the same gang.
The state’s urban development minister defended the police response, noting that six suspects had been arrested in the rapes and another two for allegedly setting the girl on fire….
The girl reported being gang raped and left in a field near her home in late October in the Madhyamgram suburb of Kolkata, formerly Calcutta. The next day she was allegedly abducted by the same gang and raped again before being left unconscious by railway tracks, police said.
The girl’s father, a taxi driver, said last week that his daughter was set on fire on Dec. 23 after being threatened with violence if she did not withdraw her police complaint. She died from her injuries on Wednesday….
