Report details decades of sex abuse at all-girls boarding school
By Joshua Rhett Miller April 19, 2017
An elite all-girls boarding school in New York has released a report detailing nearly seven decades of sexual abuse and misconduct, with both male and female educators accused of engaging in improper relationships with students.
The 127-page report released Tuesday spans misconduct at the Emma Willard School in Troy from the late 1950s through the 2015-16 academic year, including instances of rape, sexual assault and harassment, as well as the “grooming” of young women for affairs.
In all, more than 75 people from the Emma Willard community participated in what the authors of the report called a candid and “sobering account of alumnae experiences.”….
The report comes just days after the results of a similar investigation was released by officials at Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding school in Connecticut.
The report is a response, in part, to allegations made last year by former student Kat Sullivan, who said she had been raped by a male teacher, Scott Sargent, in 1998. Sargent, according to the Boston Globe, was fired after the incident but later found a job at a private school in Connecticut and did not face charges in the alleged rape.
“As a community, we collectively offer our compassion and support,” school officials said in a letter accompanying the report….
Investigation uncovers decades of sex abuse at top prep school

WALLINGFORD, Conn. — A new report names 12 former faculty and staff members at an elite Connecticut boarding school who allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct with students that went on for decades.
An investigator hired by Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford released the report Thursday that graphically recounts the alleged experiences of 24 former students.
The report says the alleged sexual misconduct took place between 1963 and 2010 and included “intimate kissing,” ”sexual intercourse” and “forced or coerced intercourse.”….

New Baylor lawsuit alleges 52 acts of rape by 31 football players, ‘show ’em a good time’ culture
By Davis Potter Friday, January 27, 2017
The sexual assault scandal within Baylor’s football program had another repulsive layer added to it Friday.
A Baylor graduate has sued the school, alleging in the lawsuit that she was raped in 2013 and that more than 50 acts of rape were committed by 31 football players from 2011-14, according to a report by the Dallas Morning News.
The suit, according to the report, sheds further light on a culture of sexual violence under former Baylor coach Art Briles, stating the school implemented a “show ’em a good time” policy in reference to the football program’s use of sex to attract recruits. Briles coached the Bears from 2008-15 before being fired after an investigation into the program’s handling of sexual assault allegations found that it largely ignored rape claims and discouraged other victims from reporting rape.
The suit states an investigation carried out by lawyers uncovered at least 52 rape acts, including five gang rapes with two of those committed by at least 10 players at once. The woman, a 2014 Baylor graduate identified in the suit as Elizabeth Doe, alleges she was gang raped in the spring of 2013 and is suing the school for Title IX violations and negligence, according to the report….

Fort Polk soldier writes horror novel – and it’s based on real-life events
Sunday Jan 15, 2017 By RACHEL STEFFAN
Sgt. 1st Class Joseph “Joe” Willie, a Hammond native, writes under the name of J.P. Willie. He has served 17 years in the Army, with three to go until retirement. He has been all over the world. Now he is back in Louisiana at Fort Polk, with his wife Corrie and their five children.
One might assume that growing up in rural Hammond, Louisiana, Willie would have had a quiet, southern upbringing, and he did. But he had some horrific, first-hand experiences due to a long string of activities surrounding the occult, and these fueled his first novel….
the inspiration for his novel, “Blood in the Woods,” comes from a different place.
…he felt he could write a horror novel about the things that happened in this area.
The story, about the devious and violent activities of devil worshippers, is based on actual events from Hammond in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The book is officially fictional because he dramatized the story, however, it is based in his real experiences, memories, and court documents.
Willie recalls that he and childhood friends would sometimes find small animals gutted open on a makeshift altar in the woods. That is in the book, and the group of friends in this coming-of-age novel are also real….
The real-life case
This case made Tangipahoa Parish infamous for some time, and it still comes up in pop culture. The events which took place in and around Hosanna Church may have served as inspiration for the 2014 HBO series “True Detective.”
“Some people in Hammond are still uncomfortable talking about it,” Willie said,
In May 2005, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, told The Baton Rouge Advocate that members of the Ponchatoula cult, who were accused of abusing children and animals, said they carried out the practices for years as part of a devil worshiping ritual involving cat blood.
Willie said the regular pastor of Hosanna Church, Louis Lamonica Jr., ran these rituals inside the church at night. Lamonica’s own children were being assaulted by the “dark congregation.”
In his confession, Lamonica claimed he had performed satanic rituals, child sexual abuse, and animal sacrifice in the church, and that he was not alone. He asserted that there were five other participants, including his wife, Robin, and, notably, a sheriff’s deputy, Chris Labat.
Willie’s point of view is particularly poignant as a writer, because he was a kid running around, bumping into the remnants of the cult’s activities. He is not just telling someone else’s story.
As the summary on his book states, the characters spent their time “playing in the woods, shooting pellet guns, blowing up mailboxes, fighting at school, and the beginnings of interests in girls.” Eventually, the characters “stumble upon something horrific in the woods one evening and their lives quickly take a turn.”
“The book is extremely graphic and truly disturbing, especially to parents,” Willie said.
Willie makes the distinction between Satanists and devil worshippers.
“I knew some soldiers who were open Satanists,” he said. “They told me quite a bit about it. They don’t believe in God or a devil. Their antics are a mockery of the Catholic Church. They believe they are their own gods, and they do whatever their hearts desire.”….
Devil worshippers, meanwhile, take violent action and maintain religious rituals.
“It’s a lot of blood sacrificial offerings. Out in the country, where I lived, there were lots of cattle and farmers. Devil worshippers were killing cows and ripping their hearts out on a regular basis.”
Willie emphasized that the book is not promoting or glorifying these occult activities….
Sunil Rastogi linked to 58 cases of child abuse
Somreet Bhattacharya TNN Jan 18, 2017
NEW DELHI: It cannot have been an easy task given that paedophile Sunil Rastogi confessed to 500 criminal acts over a dozen years, but Delhi Police has now pinpointed 58 of them, greatly increasing the chances of the sexual predator being put behind bars for life.
Only 15 cases of children being sexually assaulted by Rastogi were registered with the cops. Probe revealed that since 2004, Rastogi was detained thrice at police stations in Uttarkhand, UP and Delhi, but obtained release easily enough. After 2008, the 38-year-old had reduced his forays into Delhi when the laws regarding sexual assaults were strengthened.
The findings showed that while five cases were registered in east Delhi between 2004 and 2017, two incidents were reported from Udhampur, two from Rampur and three from Ghaziabad. In the same period, three cases were documented in Rudrapur in Uttrakhand.
Police said they had contacted the victims in three other cases that have surfaced in Delhi and requested them register a police complaint. A joint police team comprising cops from Delhi, Uttarakhand and UP is now trying to convince victims of the identified incidents to register complaints to ensure a watertight case against Rastogi. “We will seek Rastogi’s police custody if the charges against him are strong enough,” said Omvir Singh Bishnoi, DCP (East)….
After his arrest last Saturday, Rastogi claimed that he had first committed a sexual crime while living in Delhi with his family, the victim being a neighbour at the slum near Kalyanpuri. A case in this regard was registered in 2004 at the Ghazipur police station under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). However, the law had permitted Rastogi to seek a bail from the police station itself. The cops are trying to trace the victim to convince her to record a fresh statement….

A Boalsburg man charged with more than 1,000 felony counts of sexual abuse was sentenced on Tuesday to 20 to 40 years in prison.
Richard Garmat, 60, was accused by a family member of sexual abuse last year. The family member claimed the abuse began in fifth grade and continued until the minor was 15.
Garmat was charged in June with 1,202 counts, including 504 felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor, 123 felony counts of aggravated indecent assault without consent and 209 felony counts of indecent assault of a person younger than 13 years of age…..
The victim spoke to Ruest prior to sentencing, saying Garmat was someone “who used me, made me feel worthless and ashamed and useless to the world.”
“I will not stay broken,” the victim said, “and I will know I am healing knowing he will be held accountable for his actions.”….

Matriarch of Alleged Killer Church Cult Sentenced in Teen’s Fatal Beating
By Chris Harris December 7, 2016
The matriarch of a small religious sect that former members insist is a cult will spend the next two years in jail for her role in the prolonged, deadly beatings of two teenage brothers who tried to leave the group, PEOPLE confirms.
Traci Irwin, 50, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty in Oneida County Court in New York to two counts of felony unlawful imprisonment.
Irwin was charged, along with eight other members of the Word of Life Church, with the fatal beating of Lucas Leonard. The 19-year-old was savagely whipped and battered intermittently over a 12-hour period inside the church, which is located in New Hartford, New York — a suburb of Utica.
Lucas’ brother, 17-year-old Christopher Leonard, was also attacked in the Oct. 11, 2015, incident, but survived with numerous injuries.
The church’s 29-year-old pastor, Traci’s daughter Tiffanie Irwin, also participated in the beatings, as did the boys’ parents, Deborah and Bruce Leonard, and the brothers’ half-sister, Sarah Ferguson….
All told, nine people were indicted for their roles in the attack. Eight defendants accepted deals from the prosecution. Only Ferguson stood trial; she was convicted in July of manslaughter and assault and was sentenced to 25 years….
Thirty Years in Captivity
One woman’s escape from a London cult.
By Simon Parkin December 3, 2016
Rosie grew up in a succession of decrepit houses in South London with one man and a rotating cast of women, who claimed that they had found her on the streets as an infant. The man, Aravindan Balakrishnan—Comrade Bala, as he wanted to be called—was the head of the household. He instructed the women to deny Rosie’s existence to outsiders, and forbade them from comforting her when she cried. “Balakrishnan told us that lesbianism was caused when females cuddle female babies,” one of the women, Aisha Wahab, told me recently. “No one dared show affection.”
Rosie was not registered with local authorities, health-care providers, or schools. As a child, she often stood by a window, hoping that passersby would notice her. Once, after she exchanged greetings with the granddaughter of an elderly neighbor through a hole in the garden fence, Balakrishnan warned her that the girl intended to lure her away to be held hostage. He regularly lost his temper with Rosie, beating her and threatening to kill her. Sometimes, after an argument, she would retreat to the bathroom, to check whether the toilet still flushed. “When it worked, I kissed the handle,” Rosie, who is now thirty-three, recalled earlier this year. “I told it, ‘Thank you for being on my side.’ ”
One day in 1995, when Rosie was twelve, Balakrishnan showed her an identification card from the hospital where she was born. In a box marked “relationship to child,” Sian Davies, one of the women living in the house, had written “mother.” The revelation sat strangely in Rosie’s mind; at the time, she explained, she “didn’t have a concept of parents.” …
Balakrishnan, meanwhile, is serving a twenty-three-year prison sentence, having been found guilty, late last year, of child cruelty, false imprisonment, and sexual assault against two women….

Former TV reporter says Bill Clinton sexually assaulted her in 1980s
By Julia Boccagno CBS News October 19, 2016
Hours before the third and final presidential debate, Leslie Millwee, a former TV news reporter for a local station in Arkansas, accused Bill Clinton of sexually assaulting her three times in 1980, while he was governor, Breitbart News reported.
Millwee said that all of the incidents occurred while she was working on a story in the station’s tiny editing room. Two of the three assaults, she added, involved then-Gov. Clinton rubbing his genitalia against her.
“And he came in behind me,” she told Aaron Klein. “Started hunching me to the point that he had an orgasm. He’s trying to touch my breasts. And I’m just sitting there very stiffly, just waiting for him to leave me alone. And I’m asking him the whole time, ‘Please do not do this. Do not touch me. Do not hunch me. I do not want this.’”
The lewd behavior also allegedly occurred outside the perimeter of the now defunct station KLMN-TV, which covered the Fort Smith and Fayetteville markets. Millwee also said then-Gov. Clinton unexpectedly showed up at her house and began incessantly knocking on her door. At the time, Millwee was living with her grandmother, and she feared that Clinton’s promiscuity would eventually reach her doorstep.
“He knocked on the door for probably five, ten minutes,” she said. “Knocking. Calling my name. Saying, ‘I know you are home. Please answer the door.’ I did not answer the door.”
Millwee described the last incident as the “last straw.” After discussing it with her grandmother, she agreed that she should leave the station….
She added that she wanted to share her story in 1998 when the Monica Lewinsky and Kathleen Willey narratives began unfolding, but, at the same time, Millwee said, she feared the repercussions of doing so — how it would impact her family and career.
“And I watched the way the Clintons and Hillary slandered those women,” Millwee said in the interview. “Harassed them. Did unthinkable things to them. And I just did not want to be part of that. I had very small children at the time.”
Milwee claimed that she told three friends about her experiences with President Clinton in the 1990s. Two of the three were quoted in the original report– verifying Millwee’s story and character.
One of them — Richard Scott — is a staunch Hillary Clinton supporter and even contributed small donations to the campaign. “Leslie is one of the most frank, credible people I know,” said Scott. “She is not manipulative about what she says concerning people or events she is involved in. She tells it like it is….
A look at the sexual misconduct allegations against Donald Trump and Bill Clinton
By Colleen Shalby October 19, 2016
When Donald Trump apologized for saying in 2005 that he could grope women because of his celebrity, he immediately pointed to Bill Clinton as having done worse. Trump appeared before a debate alongside Clinton’s accusers and again mentioned the former president’s past while onstage with Hillary Clinton. But Trump’s argument was undercut when more women publicly came forward with allegations that he had groped or kissed them without consent.
Here’s a look at the pasts of both Trump and Bill Clinton and accusations against them.
WikiLeaks emails show Clinton campaign collected data to discredit Bill Clinton accuser
By Rosalind S. Helderman October 15
After Juanita Broaddrick, who has long accused former president Bill Clinton of raping her in 1978, repeated those allegations in a January tweet, aides to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton quickly moved to gather information that could be used to undermine her account, hacked internal campaign emails released Saturday by the group WikiLeaks show.
There is no evidence that the campaign publicly responded to Broaddrick’s tweet. But the email exchange between Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and David Kendall, a personal attorney for Bill and Hillary Clinton, offers unusual insight into how Clinton’s aides prepared to deal with one of the most sensitive topics it would face during the campaign.
“I was 35 years old when Bill Clinton, Ark. Attorney General raped me and Hillary tried to silence me. I am now 73….it never goes away,” Broaddrick had tweeted on Jan. 6, during the Democratic primary season.
The emails show that Kendall and Podesta discussed the matter by phone that evening. The next day, Kendall forwarded Podesta a series of documents showing that Broaddrick had previously denied the rape allegation under oath….
In 1999, Broaddrick publicly said that Clinton had forced her to have sex in a hotel room in Arkansas in the 1970s. She also that year told “Dateline NBC” that Hillary Clinton approached her at a political event a few weeks after the incident and thanked her for everything she did for Bill Clinton, a statement Broaddrick has said she took to be an implicit threat.
Broaddrick has continued to speak out against the Clintons, including at a news conference held by Donald Trump just before the Oct. 9 presidential debate….

Fugitive preacher Victor Barnard pleads guilty to sexual assault, will serve 30 years
Ex-fugitive gets 30 years under surprise plea deal.
By Jennifer Brooks Star Tribune
October 11, 2016
Fugitive preacher Victor Barnard will spend the next 30 years in prison for raping teenage girls entrusted to his care.
Barnard, who fled halfway across the globe to avoid prosecution, made a surprise confession in a Pine County courtroom Tuesday, accepting a plea agreement on two counts of felony sexual assault against young women he isolated from their families and molested for years.
Barnard, 55, accepted two consecutive 15-year sentences that almost guarantee that the leader of the cultlike River Road Fellowship will spend most or all of his life behind bars….
Barnard used to compare himself to Jesus, sometimes dressing in shepherd’s robes as he moved among his followers. Taking the plea deal, without having to go through the lurid details in court, might also allow him to cast himself in a new role as martyr, Tornambe said. That “is how he sees himself, as an apostle …[as] pretty much Jesus Christ in the flesh,” she said. “So he would take this on to spare the church.”
Tornambe spent years fighting to convince family, friends and Pine County officials that something terrible had happened to her during her years with the secretive River Road Fellowship. As the trial loomed, she had not been afraid of another fight in court….
‘Maidens’ at ages 12 and 13
Barnard had coaxed families in the River Road Fellowship to send their daughters to him, promising that a group of young women he called “maidens” would live lives of prayer and purity. Years later, two of the so-called maidens turned to Pine County authorities for help, saying Barnard began raping them almost as soon as he separated them from their families. They were 12 and 13 at the time.
Barnard left Pine County in 2009 amid rumors of sexual impropriety and financial bankruptcy. When Pine County brought charges against him in 2014, he fled, setting off an international manhunt….
Child abuse reports written off as ‘unsubstantiated’ with no investigation, NT royal commission hears
Child protection services did not have time to get to reports and use of force was routine in juvenile centre, commission told on first day of hearings Helen Davidson in Darwin
Tuesday 11 October 2016
Child protections services wrote off reports of possible abuse as “unsubstantiated” because they didn’t have time to get to them and the use of force inside Don Dale was “a matter of normal conduct”, the Northern Territory royal commission has heard.
The royal commission into the protection and detention of children in the Northern Territory began its first public hearing in Darwin’s supreme court on Tuesday….
Earlier, the commission heard from the national commissioner for children, Megan Mitchell, who told the court she had toured a number of detention centres around the country, including Don Dale in May.
“It was clear that isolation was frequently and routinely used and for very long periods of time,” she said, elaborating that some children were held in high-security isolation for 23 hours a day for several weeks.
“It was also clear that the use of force was routinely used as a matter of normal conduct of the business of the organisation, not just … when there was an incident or to overcome an incident.”
She said the poor conditions of the facility were also breaches of human rights….

Joe Paterno was told Jerry Sandusky abused a 14-year-old boy in 1976, according to testimony in newly unsealed documents
BY Amara Grautski Leonard Greene NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Tuesday, July 12, 2016
Court documents say famed Penn State coach Joe Paterno was aware as far back as 1976 that his top assistant was abusing boys, and years later other coaches knew, too, including future Rutgers and NFL coach Greg Schiano.
In testimony about the shameful Jerry Sandusky scandal, a graduate assistant said Schiano and another up-and-coming coach, Tom Bradley, kept silent about Sandusky’s crimes.
The testimony came in 2015 from ex-Penn State assistant Mike McQueary, who was a key witness in the Sandusky criminal case because he reported to Paterno seeing Sandusky rape a boy in 2001.
In his testimony, McQueary said he “briefly” discussed with Bradley what he had seen. Bradley, who is currently UCLA’s defensive coordinator, was a Joe Paterno assistant from 1979 to 2011 and replaced Sandusky as Penn State’s defensive coordinator. Bradley was Penn State’s interim head coach after Paterno was fired….
In 1976, a 14-year-old victim told Paterno that Sandusky touched him while attending a football camp at the university, penetrating his rectum with his finger as he showered, according to the Washington Post.
John Doe 150, according to the newly unsealed court documents, testified that he told Paterno of the sexual assault and the coach ignored his complaint.
“Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you, ‘I don’t want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about?’” the victim’s lawyer asked him in 2014.
“Specifically. Yes … I was shocked, disappointed, offended,” the man replied. “I was insulted … I said, is that all you’re going to do? You’re not going to do anything else?….
Sandusky, 72, was convicted in 2012 of molesting 10 boys and is serving 30 to 60 years in state prison.
New court documents suggest others at Penn State knew of Jerry Sandusky abuse
A man testified in court in 2014 that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno ignored his complaints of a sexual assault committed by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 1976 when the man was a 14-year-old boy, according to newly unsealed court documents.
By Will Hobson and Cindy Boren July 12, 2016
In 2014, a man testified that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno ignored his complaints of a sexual assault committed by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 1976 when the man was a 14-year-old boy, according to new court documents unsealed Tuesday in a Philadelphia court.
Four other former assistant football coaches at the school also were aware of Sandusky acting inappropriately with boys before law enforcement was first notified in 1998, according to testimony contained in the documents.
The allegations suggest that Paterno may have been made aware of Sandusky’s actions far earlier than has previously been reported, and that knowledge of Sandusky’s behavior may have been far more widespread among the Penn State football staff than previously known.
Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and UCLA defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, both former Penn State assistants named in the documents, denied the allegations Tuesday.
The testimony of multiple victims who have settled with Penn State, and of former assistant Mike McQueary — who witnessed Sandusky raping a boy on campus in 2001 — comes as the specifics of what Paterno and others knew about Sandusky and when are still being debated in courts and in the court of public opinion in Pennsylvania….
The 1976 victim, identified in court records as John Doe 150, said that while he was attending a football camp at Penn State, Sandusky touched him as he showered. Sandusky’s finger penetrated the boy’s rectum, Doe said, and the boy asked to speak with Paterno about it. Doe testified that he specifically told Paterno that Sandusky had sexually assaulted him, and Paterno ignored it….
While law enforcement only first became aware of allegations against Sandusky in 1998, the documents released Tuesday include several incidents in the 1980s and 1990s when Penn State football coaches and officials were aware of improper behavior by Sandusky around boys.
In 1987, according to a man identified as John Doe 75, he was a 13-year-old boy when Sandusky brought him to a coaches’ meeting room and put his hand down the boy’s shorts. Assistant coach Joe Sarra walked into the room and saw them, Doe 75 testified. Startled, Sarra immediately left and closed the door behind him, and Sandusky kissed the boy on his forehead, Doe 75 testified….

Cosby sues 7 accusers for defamation, seeks damages and retractions
By Ralph Ellis, CNN Mon December 14, 2015
Bill Cosby has struck back against some of the dozens of women who’ve accused him of sexual assault.
The world-famous comedian countersued seven women who’d sued him for defamation, saying they actually defamed him.
By saying he sexually assaulted them, the women hurt his reputation so much that plans for a new family comedy on NBC were derailed, the counterclaim said.
The women made “malicious, opportunistic, and false and defamatory accusations of sexual misconduct against” Cosby, his lawyer Monique Pressley said in a statement. They made the accusations to hurt Cosby’s reputation and to obtain financial gain, Pressley said.
Cosby is seeking unspecified damages and public retractions from the seven women: Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis and Angela Leslie.
The lawyer for the seven women, Joseph Cammarata, issued a statement on Monday saying his clients want their day in court and “expect that their good name and reputation will be restored.”
“If anyone is surprised by Cosby’s actions today, they shouldn’t be,” Cammarata said. “He’s taken a page out of the defense attorney’s playbook in an effort to shift the focus of this legitimate inquiry. It is curious that he has filed a claim only against these seven women, when there are scores of other women who have made similar allegations of sexual abuse and assault against Mr. Cosby.”
Cosby also denied he had sexually assaulted any of the seven women. He has not been charged with any crime. More than 40 women have come forward to publicly accuse Cosby, 78, of assaulting them over four decades, often saying he supplied them with drugs. Cosby’s lawyers or representative denied the accusations in the media….

A lawyer representing Pell, Allan Myers, made an application for Pell to give evidence next week via video link from Rome rather than appear in person, citing health reasons….
Stephen Woods – who was abused by the notorious paedophile priest Gerald Francis Ridsdale and the convicted paedophile brother Robert Charles Best while a student at St Alipius primary school – told Guardian Australia that he was deeply angered that Pell would not be appearing next week….
Pell, Australia’s highest-ranking cleric, was due to give evidence about child sexual abuse that occurred in institutions run by Catholic church authorities in and around Ballarat, and evidence about measures taken by the archdiocese of Melbourne to investigate child sexual abuse, known within the church as “the Melbourne Response”, before Melbourne’s county court….

Military Deployment Tied to Greater Odds of Child Abuse, Neglect
Periods during and just after deployment are highest risk, study finds
By Tara Haelle
THURSDAY, Nov. 12, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Young children of U.S. Army soldiers may have a higher risk of abuse or neglect during and just after a parent is deployed abroad, a new study finds.
“The findings are not that surprising because a family experiences enormous stress when a soldier goes off on a deployment,” said Dr. Bob Sege, a pediatrician specializing in child abuse and vice president of Health Resources in Action, in Boston.
“The men and women who go off to fight for us are doing very admirable work, and it’s not a surprise that it’s stressful for their families,” Sege said.
Other kinds of stress, such as extreme poverty, partner abuse and postpartum depression, are already known to increase the risk of child abuse, said Sege, who wasn’t involved in this research.
“This study confirms the family stress theory of what causes child maltreatment,” Sege said. “That’s important because I think many people feel that people who maltreat their children are morally deficient. But, those of us in the field know that often, they’re just really stressed out beyond their capacity to deal with their situation.”
It’s important to note that the study’s design only shows a link between deployment and child abuse, it cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
Findings from the study were published online Nov. 12 in the American Journal of Public Health….
The study focused on children under age 2 because they are at the highest risk for abuse or neglect, the authors said.
The rates of maltreatment hovered around 0.5 percent among children of soldiers who had been deployed once or twice. However, the rates were higher during and just after deployment compared to the six months before deployment.
In families of soldiers deployed once, nearly four episodes of abuse or neglect occurred per 10,000 children per month during deployment. That compared to three episodes in the six months before deployment. And, in the six months after deployment, the rate was almost 4.5 episodes per 10,000 children, the study found.
In families of soldiers deployed twice, the highest rate of abuse and neglect occurred during the second deployment, at a rate of nearly five episodes per 10,000 children per month, the research revealed….
Drexel, Bryant U. rescind honorary degrees for Bill Cosby
PHILADELPHIA — Drexel and Bryant universities have joined a number of schools in rescinding honorary degrees awarded to Bill Cosby, citing accusations of sexual assault.
Drexel President John Fry says the misconduct that came to light in a deposition Cosby gave “stands in clear opposition” to the Philadelphia school’s values.
He said in a letter Thursday to the Drexel community that universities are “critical arenas” in addressing sexual violence and Drexel takes that responsibility seriously.
Rhode Island-based Bryant said on its website Thursday that Cosby’s “egregious conduct” is “inconsistent with the character, values and behavior” it expects of the holder of an honorary degree.
It said that by revoking Cosby’s degree, it upholds the values, character and mission of the Smithfield school.
The comedian has never been charged with a crime and has denied allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted women.
