Former franchisee alerted Subway about Jared Fogle, lawyer says
AP August 27, 2015
NEW YORK — A former franchisee alerted a Subway advertising executive in 2008 about her concerns about pitchman Jared Fogle, according to her lawyer.

Cindy Mills exchanged phone numbers with Fogle after they met at an event, said Robert Beasley, a lawyer in Florida who represents Mills. After Fogle began talking about paying for sex with minors, the lawyer said Mills alerted a regional Subway contact in Florida where her business was based.

Later, he said Mills alerted Jeff Moody, who was in charge of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust, which handles the company’s marketing….

Beasley said Mills became comfortable about coming forward after Fogle agreed on Aug. 19 to plead guilty to allegations that he paid for sex with girls as young as 16 and received child pornography. Mills was not immediately available for comment Thursday evening. But according to Beasley:

-Mills offered to show Moody the texts from Fogle, but Moody stopped her and said he didn’t want to hear anymore.

-Moody said he had dealt with similar comments, and reassured Mills that Fogle had met a teacher who would get him grounded.

“To me, it was confirmation that they knew about it,” Beasley said….

The agreement with Fogle released by prosecutors said Fogle will pay $1.4 million in restitution to 14 minor victims, who will each get $100,000. The document noted that the payments would not prevent any identified or unidentified victims from pursuing civil litigation….

Abandoned, mistreated wild animals rescued from Mexico brought to Colorado animal sanctuary
Phil Tenser, Lindsay Watts Aug 27, 2015

KEENESBURG, Colo. – A dozen wild animals, some used in Mexican circuses, have a new home at a Colorado animal sanctuary.

Mexican naval aircraft brought eight African lions, two lynx, a mountain lion and a coyote to Denver Wednesday night. The menagerie then traveled to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, joining about 400 other animals on the 720-acre property.

“They have not been treated right, whether that’s been malnourished or physically abused,” said Jason Maxey, with the Wild Animal Sanctuary. “They’ve all suffered quite a bit of neglect and abuse in their life.”

Maxey said the lions, most of them cubs, look malnourished and weak. One was limping. Even worse, the rescued coyote was used by its owners for witchcraft.

“They literally would tie his front limbs together and then hang him and then perform whatever witchcraft ritual,” said animal care director Rebecca Miceli….

Rotherham child sex abuse: Most victims have not yet come forward for help, says lawyer

The Jay Report estimated that more than 1,400 children were sexually exploited
Dave Higgens

Monday 24 August 2015

Only a small fraction of more than 1,400 victims who were sexually exploited as children in Rotherham over a 16-year period have come forward for help, according to a lawyer representing survivors.

A year after the publication of the Jay Report, which produced the estimate that more than 1,400 children had been raped, trafficked, groomed and violently attacked in the South Yorkshire town, David Greenwood said that he believed fewer than 100 of the girls involved have engaged with the raft of new inquiries.

Mr Greenwood, who represents 58 girls who were subjected to sexual abuse by gangs of men in Rotherham between 1996 and 2012, said the much-criticised police and council have made progress in the town in the past 12 months. But he believes many survivors will only trust the system again once a truly independent agency is brought in….

‘Horrifying’ and ‘deeply shocking’ report into child abuse
Tuesday Aug 25, 2015
Patrice Dougan
A panel tasked with examining historical abuse in New Zealand’s state institutions has heard a litany of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, describing it as “horrifying” and “deeply shocking”.

However, the Confidential Listening and Assistance Service said the “most shocking thing was that much of this was preventable”.

“If people had been doing their jobs properly and if proper systems had been in place, much of this abuse could have been avoided with better oversight,” the panel said….

“Serious physical and sexual abuse came from a wide range of people and from both genders. Foster caregivers and extended families, social workers and staff, teachers, the clergy, cooks, gardeners, night watchmen; even other children and patients all took part in abuse.

“We heard of people using their fists and their feet, as well as weapons and other implements on occasion, to attack children. Many very severe beatings for no apparent reason were reported to us.”….

The report concluded: “It has become clear to us that the neglect and abuse of children and the previously frequent practice of locking children up in institutions has contributed to a dark legacy of suffering and crime in this country.”….

Smithsonian To Post Sign At Exhibition Featuring Bill Cosby-Owned Art

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington will post a sign Wednesday telling visitors an exhibition that includes art owned by Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille, is “fundamentally about the artworks and the artists who created them, not Mr. Cosby,” representatives for the Smithsonian Institution say.

The sign, which will be posted at 10 a.m., comes amid allegations of sexual misconduct directed against Cosby by more than two dozen women. Some of them say he drugged and raped them. Cosby has not been charged in any of the alleged assaults.

Last week it emerged that the comedian testified in 2005 he obtained the sedative Quaalude with the intent of giving the drug to women with whom he wanted to have sex, and he acknowledged giving it to at least one woman. The Los Angeles Police Department says it is conducting at least one current criminal investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Cosby….

Alexis Jay on child sex abuse: ‘Politicians wanted to keep a lid on it’
Her devastating Rotherham report blew open the national debate on child sex abuse. Now the ‘retired’ social worker is investigating historic claims on an unprecedented scale, taking on Westminster, the BBC and NHS
Helen Pidd  Monday 13 July 2015

Alexis Jay officially retired two years ago – not that you’d notice. In 2013 she stepped down from her role as Scotland’s chief social work adviser, shortly after being awarded an OBE. But rather than tending to her garden she ended up digging up horrific claims of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. That job done, the scalps of many officials taken, she moved on to sort out Northern Ireland’s safeguarding children boards.

But last week the 66-year-old began her biggest task yet, when she joined the panel of what has been described as Britain’s most complicated and wide-reaching statutory inquiry ever. The independent inquiry into child sex abuse (IICSA) is expected to take five years investigating claims of abuse in faith and religious organisations, the criminal justice system, local authorities and national institutions such as the BBC, NHS and Ministry of Defence….

“By victims we are not talking about children who were at risk of sexual exploitation, who were friendly with victims or who moved in the same circle,” she told the journalists. “The 1,400 victims are those who had actually experienced sexual exploitation.” Determined that no one could bat away her findings, she had produced a 153-page report that spelled out in plain language the appalling abuse suffered by children aged 10-16 in the South Yorkshire town (Rotherham) between 1997 and 2013….

Rotherham Child Sex Abuse Investigation Uncovers Several Hundred Suspects And Several Thousand Leads

Rotherham Child Sex Abuse Investigation Uncovers Several Hundred Suspects And Several Thousand Leads

The Huffington Post UK   By Steven Hopkins 24/06/2015

Hundreds of potential suspects have been identified in an investigation into child sex abuse in Rotherham, along with several thousand new lines of enquiry, police have said.

The National Crime Agency began an investigation in December last year following the Alexis Jay report that revealed there were 1400 victims of abuse in the town between 1997 and 2013. Police and other authorities knew about the abuse, but failed to act.

Police said Wednesday that “stage one” of their investigation had uncovered “a significant number of potential offenders. The current figure is in the low hundreds”….

Steve Baldwin, who is a Senior Investigating Officer involved in the operation, said police now had more than 3,300 lines of enquiry.

He said the abuse was “horrific” and the evidence police had gathered “details some very disturbing events”.

Police believe the 1,400 victims identified in the Alexis Jay report remains a “very good assessment” of the numbers of children abused during the time period….

Last month two new reports revealed that authorities in Rotherham had been warned about child sexual exploitation in 2003 – and given a list of the suspected main offenders – and told three years later that the problem was established and very serious, but had failed to investigate.

Dr Angie Heal provided a list of potential abusers as part of a report on the links between grooming and drug dealing in 2003 to police and council officials. That report and another from 2006 were released under the Freedom of Information Act to The Sheffield Star….

Last year, an inquiry found 1,400 children were abused by gangs of men, mainly of Pakistani origin, in South Yorkshire between 1997 and 2013.

The inquiry concluded: “It is hard to describe the appalling nature of the abuse that child victims suffered.”….

Prof Jay said: “They were raped by multiple perpetrators, trafficked to other towns and cities in the north of England, abducted, beaten and intimidated.”….

France launches criminal inquiry into alleged sex abuse by UN soldiers
Prosecutors announce investigation into claims French soldiers raped children on peacekeeping operation in Central African Republic
Kim Willsher in Paris and Sandra Laville in London Thursday 7 May 2015
French prosecutors have ordered a criminal investigation into allegations that French peacekeeping soldiers raped children and demanded sex for food in the Central African Republic.

The decision follows revelations in the Guardian more than a week ago that a senior United Nations official had been suspended for leaking details of the alleged abuse to the French government.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said on Thursday it had decided to launch criminal proceedings after receiving a reply to its request for information from the UN about the accusations of sexual abuse by French soldiers serving with the peacekeeping operation Sangaris.

It said the investigation concerned “the rape of minors under 15 years old by persons who had abused the authority conferred upon them by their roles, and complicity in this crime”….

Kompass, director of field operations, was suspended last month and faces an internal disciplinary disciplinary hearing for breaching UN protocols.

On Wednesday an appeal tribunal found that the suspension of Kompass was unlawful and ordered his reinstatement while an internal management review continues….

UN suspension of sexual abuse report whistleblower is unlawful, tribunal rules

Judge orders UN to lift suspension of Anders Kompass, who leaked internal UN report on alleged abuse of children by French troops in Central African Republic
Sandra Laville Wednesday 6 May 2015

An appeal tribunal has ordered the United Nations to immediately lift the suspension of a whistleblower who disclosed the alleged sexual abuse of children by peacekeeping troops in Africa to the French authorities.

A judge said on Wednesday the decision to suspend Anders Kompass, the director of field operations for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, was “prima facie unlawful”. He ordered his employers in the UN to lift his suspension immediately to prevent further damage to his reputation.

The decision is a blow to senior UN officials who have repeatedly defended their treatment of Kompass, claiming he breached strict protocols about the passing on of confidential information to outside authorities….

South Yorkshire Police warned twice of Rotherham child abuse but did not act, as commissioner claims girls were seen as ‘willing’

Loulla-Mae Eleftheriou-Smith  Tuesday 05 May 2015

Senior members of South Yorkshire police were warned twice of the serious child abuse being carried out in Rotherham around a decade before it was discovered 1,400 children had been raped, trafficked and groomed over a period of 16 years – but no action was taken at the time.

The Sheffield Star has obtained reports from 2003 and 2006 detailing the organised child sexual exploitation being carried out in Rotherham and Sheffield.

Dr Angie Heal, the author of the reports, stated at the time it was “very evident” that “significant abuse” was taking place in Sheffield and Rotherham, in 2003, and in 2006 found that that the perpetrators of sexual abuse had been able to “carry on with impunity”.

The reports were sent to both South Yorkshire Police district commanders, chief superintendents and CID and community safety superintendents at the time, but no action was taken. The newspaper obtained the documents through a Freedom of Information request.

As the news of the warnings emerge, South Yorkshire’s current police and crime commissioner has claimed that  “it all went wrong” in Rotherham because police had not understood what grooming was, nor recognised the abuse, and had instead seen the girls as prostitutes….

Influential Secret Society Blamed For Problems On Campus Dodges Transparency Push
Tyler Kingkade 04/01/2015

The University of Alabama student government voted down a proposal last week to establish political parties, which could have forced a well-known secret society, blamed for many social ills on campus, to go public.

In a 21-9 vote on March 26, the Student Government Association Senate shot down a resolution that called for allowing students to set up political parties for on-campus elections. Currently, UA rules forbid official political parties. However, an underground society called “The Machine” is widely known to pick and endorse candidates and allegedly intimidates and harasses its opponents.

According to the United Alabama Project, a student group that came up with the proposal, all but one of the senators who voted against the resolution were backed by the Machine. None of them spoke publicly in opposition to the resolution during the senate meetings….

The Machine has existed for roughly a century, and is comprised of members from select fraternities and sororities. The group directs its members, and by extension their fellow fraternity brothers and sorority sisters, to vote for candidates of their choosing. The Machine has even been known to influence local political elections, according to The New York Times.

Students have accused the Machine of being a major reason why UA sororities were still excluding black women from joining in 2013, as well as for acting as a roadblock in subsequent attempts by other SGA representatives to push the Greek system toward integration in 2014….

Thousands of Vulnerable Children Go Missing from Britain’s Protective Services, Oxford officer was silenced over sex abuse fears, New lawsuit alleges sexual abuse in Fort Worth Catholic Diocese

March 6, 2015 Comments Off on Thousands of Vulnerable Children Go Missing from Britain’s Protective Services, Oxford officer was silenced over sex abuse fears, New lawsuit alleges sexual abuse in Fort Worth Catholic Diocese

Thousands of Vulnerable Children Go Missing from Britain’s Protective Services
By Leah McGrath Goodman  March 3, 2015

A general view showing housing in Rotherham on September 1, 2014 in Rotherham, England. South Yorkshire Police are launching an independent investigation into its handling of the Rotherham child abuse scandal and will also probe the role of public bodies and council workers. A report claims at least 1,400 children as young as 11 were sexually abused from 1997- 2013 in Rotherham Care Homes but no council staff will face disciplinary action.

Many of the child sex abuse scandals that have shocked Britain in recent years involve victims who were supposed to be under the protection of the state—children identified as at risk by child protective services and in the care of local authorities.

Many in Britain have characterized the abuses as a thing of the past. Surely such horrors could never happen today. But an analysis of the most recent official data shows that each year the government loses track of around 2,000 vulnerable children in care, even as reports of human trafficking inside the country are on the rise….

Bad record-keeping has been a feature of the abuse scandals. Last autumn, a review by the U.K.’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children found that between 1979 and 1999, the U.K. Home Office had “lost or destroyed” 114 files relating to reported child abuse by high-ranking people, including senior politicians. The review came after a report last year from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, revealed that at least 1,400 minors were subjected to widespread, organized child-sex abuse from 1997 to 2013, including many who were in care….

The U.K.’s Human Trafficking Centre’s latest assessment shows a total of 2,744 people, including 602 children, reported as trafficked for exploitation in the U.K. in 2013, up 22 percent from 2012. The organization stresses that the numbers reflect only what’s been reported and are rough figures. Not all reports indicate confirmed trafficking, but, at the same time, the totals could be much higher, as not all incidents are reported. Victims were forced to work in brothels, hotels, private homes or on the street as sex workers, and also forced into domestic servitude or to work on building sites or in farms and factories….

Oxford officer was silenced over sex abuse fears

Police treated abuse victims as if they were ‘wayward girls’, report says
Paul Peachey Tuesday 03 March 2015

A council worker who wrote a series of increasingly exasperated emails warning of child abuse by Asian men in Oxfordshire was silenced after an official complaint by senior officials about his attitude, it has emerged.

Details came to light in a report published yesterday revealing that 373 girls were likely to have been victims of grooming, rape and trafficking after police and social services failed to take victims and their own staff seriously.

The worker, an ex-detective, raised repeated concerns with the director of children’s services and other officials at the county council in 2007 after seeing a 13-year-old in bed with an adult. He also reported a stream of men going into a flat every night and emerging in the early hours.

But instead of dealing with his complaints, a senior council official complained about his behaviour and his manager made an unreserved apology for the “unprofessional way” in which he had acted….

The serious case review, produced by Dr Alan Bedford, found that children as young as 12 were treated by police as “wayward girls”, complicit in their own abuse, despite being groomed by adults who had ensnared them through drink, drugs and menace.

One detective reported that a 14-year-old girl had initiated sex with two adult men, and reports used the term “boyfriend” for men in their 30s seen with girls as young as 13….

The report said the victims’ accounts were often ignored or seen as exaggerated when they did come forward to authorities….

In one incident, a girl told of how she turned up at a police station after 2am covered in blood after a sex attack. “They dismissed me as being naughty, a nuisance. I was bruised and bloody,” she told the report.

New lawsuit alleges sexual abuse in Fort Worth Catholic Diocese By Elizabeth Campbell 03/05/2015
FORT WORTH

A man who lives near Spokane, Wash., is suing the Fort Worth Roman Catholic Diocese saying he was sexually assaulted in the 1990s by a priest who was his seventh-grade history teacher at a Catholic school in Wichita Falls.

The victim, identified in court documents as John Doe 117, also named Fort Worth Bishop Michael Olson in the suit filed this week in Tarrant County district court.

The victim is seeking over $1 million in damages for emotional anguish, medical expenses and diminished earning capacity because of what is described in the suit as a “sadistic ritual of sexual abuse” by the late priest John Sutton.

Sutton, who died in 2004, told the student that if he told anyone of their encounters that “I have the power to ruin your life,” according to the suit….

Jersey care inquiry: Sexual abuse ‘was common’
10 February 2015
Consensual sex and sexual abuse were both common at the Haut de la Garenne children’s home in the 1980s, a care inquiry has heard.

Witness D, now in his 40s, told the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry he was too scared to report the abuse he suffered to the authorities.

He was in the home from 1981 until he left care in 1984.

His testimony suggested there was widespread abuse of residents by other residents….

A notorious sex offender dubbed the “Beast of Jersey” would sit girls on his knees and abuse them, the island’s care inquiry has heard.

In a statement, Witness 205, a female former resident of La Preference children’s home in St Martin, said Edward Paisnel was a regular visitor.

She said he encouraged young female residents to call him “Uncle Ted”.

Former Haut de la Garenne resident tells of abuse  16 January 2015
A former resident of the Haut de la Garenne children’s home was abused by a member of staff and residents in the 1960s and ’70s, an inquiry heard.

A witness known as Mr K, aged 50, gave evidence to the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry (ICJI) by video link from the UK.

Mr K said he was at the home for 13 years, and described the time as “horrific”.

He told the inquiry he felt he missed out on his childhood completely….

Mr K said corporal punishment at the home was excessive, that he had been given three or six lashes with a cane for misbehaving, and then put in a detention cell.

“Staff went overboard and I actually think some of them enjoyed it; one time I was hit so much that the cane broke on me,” he said….

Jersey care inquiry: Police told of Savile abuse   15 January 2015

A Jersey care home resident told police in 2009 that he had been abused by Jimmy Savile, an inquiry has heard.

Savile, who died in 2011, was never prosecuted over the allegations, the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry (IJCI) has already been told.

The abuse happened at Haut de la Garenne in 1976, the victim told police as part of their investigation into alleged offences at the home.

Police have said there was insufficient evidence for investigating Savile.

The victim’s interview with police investigating abuse at the care home was read to the inquiry in Jersey.

Savile, a Radio 1 DJ who also presented the BBC’s Top Of The Pops and Jim’ll Fix It, died aged 84 – a year before allegations that he had sexually abused children were broadcast in an ITV documentary.

He is now believed to be one of Britain’s most prolific sex abusers and is thought to have assaulted hundreds of people between the ages of five and 75.

But was never charged with any offence.

The DJ was a regular visitor to Jersey and was Mr Battle of Flowers at the island’s annual parade three times, the last time in 2002….

Rotherham abuse lawyer: More evidence will link perpetrators to police
Complaints have been made about the late Pc Hassan Ali alleging he was unwilling to pursue claims of exploitation
By Telegraph reporter  09 Feb 2015

A child abuse lawyer has revealed more damning evidence could emerge in the Rotherham scandal that shows a link between police and perpetrators.

David Greenwood, of Switalskis Solicitors, represents 38 of the 1,400 children found to have been sexually exploited in the South Yorkshire town.

He revealed that two of them asked him to make official complaints about Pc Hassan Ali – who died in hospital this week following a collision with a car – alleging he was unwilling to pursue their claims of exploitation.

Mr Greenwood said the officer’s death would not be the end of the matter, and the wider scandal “is not going away”.

He said: “I’m pretty certain it will be bigger than it is even now.

“I think that evidence will emerge of links between perpetrators and police. It may be there was, as I have said, an unofficial policy of not pursuing these complaints….

The National Crime Agency is leading the investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham.

Earlier this month, a police officer and two councillors in the town were accused of having sex with underage girls.

A former Home Office researcher says a bullying culture at Rotherham Council led to her warnings of child sexual exploitation being suppressed in 2002, years before action was finally taken.

A report this month by government official Louise Casey concluded the council was not “fit for purpose”.

The way many in the authority denied a 2014 finding children were exploited between 1997 and 2013 was criticised.

The council says it is investigating researcher Adele Gladman’s claims.

At the time of the claims, Ms Gladman was undertaking research for a Home Office pilot. But she found her findings about the scale of sexual exploitation in Rotherham were also met with denial….
Ms Gladman was based at Rotherham Council when she carried out the work for the Home Office.

She describes being subjected to bullying and intimidation after her research found a small number of men, mainly of Pakistani heritage, were sexually exploiting a significant number of young people.

She says the council sent her on race awareness training and effectively suppressed her report.

“I had every aspect of my professionalism questioned,” she said.

“I had every aspect of my work questioned. I had data removed over a weekend so that I couldn’t substantiate my findings. Fortunately I had made copies.”

She says the bullying she faced went beyond the local authority and remembers a police officer approaching her outside her office.

“He and a colleague said words along the lines of ‘Wouldn’t it be a shame if these perpetrators found out where you and your family lived’.

“And I took that as a direct threat to my personal safety. The message was very clear.”….

Child abuse royal commission: Rabbi Yosef Feldman resigns as director of Yeshiva centre

The director of the ultra-orthodox Jewish Yeshiva centre in Sydney has resigned after last week telling a royal commission hearing he did not know it was a crime for an adult to touch a child’s genitals.

Rabbi Yosef Feldman’s evidence at a Melbourne hearing of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was widely criticised by Australia’s broader Jewish community.

In a statement, Rabbi Feldman apologised for the comments he made to the royal commission and said he would step down from all responsibilities as the director on the board of management at Yeshiva….

During the royal commission hearing, Rabbi Feldman said not all abuse cases should be referred to police and that paedophiles should be granted leniency.

“I would be asking for more leniency on people who have shown that they haven’t offended in the last 20 years or decades ago, and have psychological analyses that this is the case,” he said on Monday….

Vic Alhadeff from the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies said Rabbi Feldman was unfit to be a leader in the Jewish community.

“The remarks which have come to light are repugnant to Jewish values. They are not representative of the Jewish community,” he said….
