Lord Janner lied to child abuse inquiry in 1992 documents reveal
Telegraph Reporters 4 April 2016
Lord Janner lied about evidence he gave to a child abuse inquiry – with the inquiry chairman’s permisson, newly-released documents reveal.
The peer gave evidence in private to the 1992 Kirkwood Inquiry into child abuse in Leicestershire care homes in the wake of the conviction of paedophile Frank Beck.
Documents obtained by the BBC show the inquiry looked into claims Lord Janner sexually abused a boy from a care home whom he had “befriended” in the 1970s.
The boy, as an adult in his 30s, reported the allegations to the police in 1991. They were then made public by Beck at his trial that year.
The 1992 documents show that after his questioning – on June 19, 1992 – Lord Janner asked the inquiry’s chairman Andrew Kirkwood QC if he could tell the media waiting outside that he had not been asked about allegations of child abuse against him.
Mr Kirkwood replied: “Of course, Mr Janner.”
The documents show this was not true, and the revelation that the real substance of the inquiry’s questioning was withheld from the media will further fuel allegations of a cover-up.
Lord Janner was not prosecuted at the time and he rubbished the child abuse claims in the House of Commons.
He also refused to answer police questions.
The Kirkwood files will be crucial evidence for the national child abuse inquiry, chaired by Justice Lowell Goddard, which will examine the Janner case, including whether the inquiry wrongly left out allegations against Lord Janner in its final report. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/04/04/lord-janner-lied-to-abuse-inquiry/

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse today began a hearing about the experiences of men and women who were abused as children in sporting clubs.
The Sydney-based hearing is focusing on allegations of child sexual abuse involving a soccer coach, a cricket coach and a tennis coach, and how the relevant governing bodies responded to reports of the abuse at the time….
The principal then reported the abuse and BXK was later charged with three counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10. He pleaded not guilty and was later acquitted of all three charges.
He was later convicted of the abuse of several other children in 2002 and sentenced to five years in jail with a non-parole period of two and half years…. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-04/inquiry-hears-of-woman-sexually-abused-by-soccer-coach-as-8yo/7296174
Predatory paedophile walks from court despite sixth child abuse offence
A PREDATORY paedophile who was being sentenced for child abuse for the sixth time has walked free from court.
Rapist Sidney Hare, 88, repeatedly abused numerous youngsters during a quarter of a century, offering them cash and sweets or inviting them to see his tortoise.
And when he got seven years in 2006 a judge told him his age and ill heath, he was said to have late stage bowel cancer, were the only things stopping him getting life.
Now, almost ten years later, Hare has admitted molesting another youngster in 1981 during the latest depraved attack to come to light.
Colin Meeke, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court the dad of the 10-year-old victim, now a woman in her 40s, had worked with Hare in a factory.
Around Easter time in 1981, he said the girl and her sister were walking past the defendant’s house on Thorne Road, Eldene, when they saw him at the door.
He said that he offered them some money and sweets and after giving some to her sister he said he had nothing else in his pockets.
After inviting them into his house he took the little girl upstairs to go through the pockets of other clothes while her younger sister waited downstairs.
The pervert them pushed her on to the bed and climbed on top of her, simulating intercourse, as he pawed at her over her clothing before she fought him off.
Mr Meeke said: “She didn’t tell anyone about it, as people didn’t in those days.
“It wasn’t for some years, until she saw him at a birthday party about 20 years ago, that she first told anybody about it. Then, more recently, she has reported the matter to the police.”
When he was questioned by the police he was frank about what had happened and said he recalled the girl’s name and that she came to his house.
Hare, now of Ashmead Court, Trowbridge, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault.
He was jailed for seven years in 2006 after admitting raping and abusing two sisters starting when they were about four between, January 1974 and the end of 1983.
That hearing was told he had advanced cancer of the bowel, asbestosis and a heart pacemaker which had to be refitted every six months.
His first conviction was in 1973 when he received a suspended sentence for two indecent assaults on young girls aged eight and nine years old.
In August 1981 he was put on a two-year probation order for indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl.
Two years later he received another suspended sentence for abusing the sister of the young girls he raped.
And in 2004 he was jailed for 12 months for indecent assaults on an eight-year-old girl dating from 1995 and 1996….
Passing sentence Judge Peter Blair QC said: “I have to punish you for something you did 35 years ago.
“In reality if it had been reported back then I expect you would have had probation as the sentence.”
He imposed an 18-month community rehabilitation order and told him to register as a sex offender for five years, though he has to register for life under his last sentence. http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/14401978.Predatory_paedophile_walks_from_court_despite_sixth_child_abuse_offence/

Officials probe ‘Satanic’ animal sacrifices on Long Island
By Dean Balsamini March 13, 2016
The Suffolk County SPCA is probing whether a satanic cult has been beheading goats and chickens on Long Island for the past two years.
Officials also believe the recent torture of a 7-month-old pit bull found hanging from a tree last month may be part of a gang initiation rite.
“Animal abuse is widespread. We’ve found them in all areas of the county,” Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross told The Post.
Suffolk County SPCA Capt. Paul Llobel said several incidents “may be tied to religious and satanic ritual. There’s a lot going on here right now….
The Suffolk SPCA held a training class on ritualistic animal sacrifice and the occult at the county Police Academy last August.
Representatives from Long Island law enforcement heard guest speaker Marcos Quinones, author of “The Goddess of Death: La Santa Muerte and Satan: An Intelligence Report” and a recognized cult expert with the FBI.
In July, the SPCA put out a call for “humane investigators” in the wake of the animal sacrifices….
Kenneth Clarke ‘failed to act’ over Lord Janner and Cyril Smith child abuse tip-offs
Government’s sex abuse inquiry – which has first preliminary hearing on Wednesday – will hear claims that former home secretary was warned of abuse in the early 90s
By David Barrett, Home Affairs Correspondent 8 Mar 2016
Kenneth Clarke failed to act on warnings that Greville Janner and Cyril Smith had been accused of child sex abuse by several alleged victims, the Government’s official inquiry will be told.
As Justice Lowell Goddard holds her first preliminary hearing, a victims’ campaigner will claim that Mr Clarke, who was home secretary from 1992 to 1993, was sent details of a series of sex assaults by the MPs.
The allegations by Nigel O’Mara, a leading figure in the sex abuse survivors organisation WhiteFlowers, will add further weight to claims that information was overlooked by the authorities.
Lawyers for Mr O’Mara said they would challenge a decision by Justice Goddard not to award their client special “core participant” status in the inquiry, which grants the right to examine evidence and be represented in the hearings.
In a statement released ahead of the hearing, Mr O’Mara said: “In 1992 I co-founded Survivors UK, a helpline for survivors of male rape and sexual abuse.
“We received a series of calls from young men alleging that they had been sexually abused, while they were children in care, by Greville Janner MP and Cyril Smith MP.
“In 1992/93 I wrote, on behalf of Survivors UK, to the home secretary, Kenneth Clarke, informing him of the multiple allegations of sexual assault on children by Greville Janner MP and Cyril Smith MP.”
The allegations were made in calls to telephone counsellors at a hotline run by the charity by young men who said they had been abused while living in children’s homes.
“I asked the home secretary to investigate these allegations of sexual abuse of children by these powerful men. No response was received,” said Mr O’Mara.
“A key issue with Greville Janner and Cyril Smith is how they were able to go unchallenged and unprosecuted for so many years….

Lord Janner ‘abused 12 at children’s home’ as child sex case is DROPPED
LORD JANNER allegedly abused 12 former residents of a children’s home, as the former Labour MP’s historic child sex abuse case was DROPPED in light of his death.
By Rebecca Perring Fri, Jan 15, 2016
Legal proceedings were left in limbo last month following the announcement that the elderly peer had died.
But it has since emerged that the peer regualrly visited Leicestershire children’s homes between 1970 and the mid to late 1980s.
An ex-police officer claims he reported suspicions about Lord Janner, a decade before police began a full inquiry….
The former Labour peer had been accused of 22 counts of sex offences against boys dating back to the 1960s – allegations his family vigorously denied, insisting he was “entirely innocent”.
A jury was to decide – without resolving whether he was guilty or sentencing – if the incidents involving nine alleged victims had taken place. But Greville Janner died in December following a long illness, aged 87.
He had already been declared unfit to stand trial due to his “deteriorating and irreversible” dementia.
In a statement by the Crown Prosecution Service, seen by Express.co.uk, the investigation into the trial of Frank Beck, a care home manager who was eventually convicted of child abuse, is also explored….
The CPS say they have information about 22 alleged victims.
These include four indecent assaults on a male under 16 between 1969 and 1988, two indecent assaults between 1984 and 1988, four counts of buggery of a male under 16 between 1972 and 1987 and two counts of buggery between 1977 and 1988.
Earlier this year, there was outrage when Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders decided it was not in the public interest to put Janner on trial because he was so ill.
She later reversed her decision following a review of the case by David Perry, QC, who said there should be a trial of facts….
Cambridge-educated Greville Janner was MP for Leicester North West from 1970 to 1974 and for Leicester West until 1997.
The father-of-three then left the Commons to take a seat in the House of Lords as Baron Janner of Braunstone….
Janner: Three chances missed to put MP on trial for child abuse
By Ciaranfagan January 19, 2016
Three chances to put Greville Janner on trial for child abuse were blown because of mistakes by the police or prosecutors, according to a senior legal figure today.
Retired High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques said the former Leicester MP, who died aged 86 last month, should have been charged with offences against boys in 1991, 2002 and 2007.
The cases did not proceed because of the “inadequacy” of police investigations or decisions by senior prosecutors.
The peer’s family has always insisted he was innocent of any crime….
Sir Richard’s review of the authorities’ handling of the Janner case was commissioned by the Crown Prosecution Service last year.
He found the decision not to charge Lord Janner in 1991 with a series of offences against a 14-year-old boy was wrong. Sir Richard said police investigation was “inadequate” and the CPS should have pressed for further inquiries instead of closing the case.
In 2002, Leicestershire Police did not tell the CPS about a second alleged victim’s claims, he revealed….
The death of the veteran Labour politician – who was accused of 22 sexual offences against boys between 1963 and 1988 – ended the prospect of his alleged victims’ evidence ever being tested in a criminal court.
All case files have been handed to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, (IICSA),
It will sit for the first time in March to begin its investigation into the late peer….
Leaked email may derail criminal case against Bill Cosby
By Ray Kelly January 18, 2016
A former district attorney says he agreed more than a decade ago that his office would not use a civil deposition given by Bill Cosby in any criminal matters, according to an email obtained by CNN.
The email written by former Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Bruce Castor details a verbal agreement Castor had with Cosby’s attorneys about his 2005 sexual assault case.
“I can see no possibility that Cosby’s deposition could be used in a state criminal case, because I would have to testify as to what happened, and the deposition would be subject to suppression,” Castor said in the email written three months before criminal charges were brought against Cosby.
In Cosby’s deposition, Cosby detailed his romantic interest in the alleged victim; his pursuit of other young women during his long marriage; and his use of quaaludes in the 1970s as a seduction tool.
His lawyers have asked for the aggravated sexual assault charges to be dismissed, contending that they “violate an express agreement” with the district attorney at the time which they say constitutes an immunity deal….
Woman tells how she was sold into sex slavery aged 14 and raped 110 times in a DAY
A BRITISH woman has told how she was sold as a teen sex slave by her evil Albanian boyfriend and raped hundreds of times for cash. By Kieran Corcoran Tue, Jan 19, 2016
The woman was just 14 when her holiday flame turned vicious, beat her and sold her on to be pimped out.
She told how at her lowest ebb she was raped by 110 men in a single day, who paid €20 to spend five minutes with her.
The woman, who used the false name Megan to speak about her experiences, spent six years captive in Greece before making her escape.
Speaking to MailOnline, Megan told how she fell for Jak, a charming Albanian whom she fell for on a dream holiday to Greece.
Incredibly, after the break was over she was allowed to stay in the country with him by her permissive mother.
But after her parent, whom she said struggled with alcoholism, was off the scene, her new love turned.
The man, whom she called Jak, sold her to a Greek pimp, who took her far away and made her have sex for as many as 22 hours per day.
She was forced to hand half the money she made over to the pimp and wire the rest back to Jak every week….

A trial of the facts in the case against Lord Janner could still go ahead despite his death, a former Director of Public Prosecutions has said.
Janner, a one-time Labour MP for Leicester West, had been accused of 22 counts of historical sex offences against boys but died at the weekend.
His victims have complained they have been ‘robbed of justice’ by his passing, which is likely to prompt the scrapping of a ‘trial of facts’, which had been planned for April.
But Ken Macdonald, a former head of the CPS, the body which decides whether prosecutions a should go ahead, has said there is no reason the Old Bailey case could not still be heard despite Janner’s death.
He told Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘The whole point of a trial of the facts is that it does not exist to determine the guilt or innocence of anyone….
Warped radiographer jailed for possessing more than a MILLION child abuse images and videos
22 Dec 2015 By Mathew Di Salvo
Christopher Daldorph, 45, spent 14 years amassing the vile collection by trawling the ‘dark web’ – a hidden layer of the internet used by paedophiles and drug dealers
A hospital radiographer has been jailed for possessing more than a MILLION child abuse images and videos – the biggest haul ever seen by the National Crime Agency.
Sick Christopher Daldorph, 45, spent 14 years amassing the vile collection by trawling the ‘dark web’ – a hidden layer of the internet used by paedophiles and drug dealers.
The married pervert was arrested in April 2015 after officers searched his home and found a number of devices containing images – featuring children as young as two.
One of the hard drives which Daldorph had concealed was found to contain 1.8 terabytes of footage data – the equivalent of 3,000 full-length feature films.
He faced charges today relating to 141,539 pictures and videos, but officers are still trawling through his computers, and reckon he stored more than ONE MILLION….
The vile material included thousands of Category A abuse images and videos – the most extreme kind.
When officers searched his house he admitted his guilt, and gave them the passwords to access the numerous laptops, hard drives and USBs containing the images….
Christian Hall, who led the investigation for the NCA, said: “Daldorph was responsible for amassing hundreds of thousands of indecent images, some of them the most extreme possible involving very young children.
“Each of those involved a child being abused in some of the worst ways imaginable.
“While we have no evidence to show he committed any contact offences himself, what he has done has perpetuated demand for products that can only be produced through the abuse of children.”….

Catholic Church saves $62 million on sexual abuse claims
The Catholic Church avoided paying up to $62 million in compensation to sexual abuse victims by creating the controversial Melbourne Response program, which capped payments at $50,000 for each victim.
Internal documents also show church leaders ordered written records about sex abuse be “kept to a minimum” to avoid losing lawsuits, and hired one of the country’s best spin doctors in a bid to prepare for the scandal in the early 1990s….
In August 1996, Archbishop Pell discussed the idea of creating a special trust to “avoid an open-ended call on funding for counselling fees” for abuse victims, to only days later canvass suggestions of how the church could financially support three paedophile priests set to be released from prison.
Meetings also describe plans for multimillion-dollar property deals and commissioning a new painting of the archbishop, while senior leaders were also expressing concern about “being seen to apply the maximum penalty” against paedophile priests, the protection of church assets and their own exposure to liability in sexual abuse lawsuits…. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/catholic-church-saves-62-million-on-sexual-abuse-claims-20151205-glgavf.html
Priest warned police officer to drop investigation or lose job, child abuse hearing told
Father Peter Taffe ‘told officer Denis Ryan he would be out of a job’ if he pursued an investigation into the Mildura parish priest Monsignor John Day
Australian Associated Press Sunday 6 December 2015
A Victorian priest warned a police officer to drop his investigation into a colleague over child abuse allegations, an inquiry has heard.
Father Peter Taffe told the police officer he would be out of a job if he pursued an investigation into the Mildura parish priest Monsignor John Day, the child abuse royal commission was told.
Senior counsel assisting the commission, Gail Furness SC, said 140 people had made child sex abuse claims against priests and others in religious orders in the diocese of Ballarat since 1980. Ninety per cent of the claims were against seven priests, including 78 against Gerald Francis Ridsdale and 15 against Day.
Furness said a man had told Mildura assistant priest Taffe in January 1972 his son had been abused by Day. She said Taffe’s first words had been: “I thought he was over all this.”
A former Mildura police officer, Denis Ryan, had already been investigating complaints against Day, she said, and would tell the commission Taffe had warned him in December 1971: “Drop the inquiry into Monsignor Day or you’ll be out of a job.”
Ryan wrote to then Ballarat bishop Ronald Mulkearns setting out allegations from seven complainants. The inquiry was told Mulkearns had said he had been assured police were satisfied there was no substance to the charges, and it was impossible to move Day out of Mildura.
“Any such move would be tantamount to a public declaration that I consider him guilty,” he said….
Furness said Mulkearns had told another Mortlake victim’s mother: “How am I to take the word of a child over one of my priests?” http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2015/dec/07/priest-warned-police-officer-to-drop-investigation-or-lose-job-child-abuse-hearing-told

Court hearing on 87-year-old peer’s mental health is told former Labour grandee is suffering from ‘advanced and disabling’ dementia

Lord Janner has been declared unfit to plead in a criminal trial over a range of sex abuse charges dating back 50 years, a senior judge has ruled.
In a hearing at the Old Bailey on the 87-year-old’s mental health, Mr Justice Openshaw said the peer was suffering from “advanced and disabling” dementia.
He detailed reports from four leading psychiatrists and psychologists which had been commissioned by both prosecution and defence – all of which agreed the peer’s mental health was very poor. Janner did not attend the latest court hearing….
Janner is accused of 15 counts of indecent assault and seven counts of a separate sexual offence against a total of nine alleged victims in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Historic abuse charity sees nine people a day in Dundee
By Lindsey Hamilton 26 Jun 2015
Nine Dundonians a day are coming forward with their own personal horror stories of historic abuse.
That figure adds up to 45 Dundee residents a week, or 2,250 people a year, who have experienced sexual, physical or mental abuse — according to a city charity.
And now Izzy’s Promise has revealed the extent of the problem in a bid to break down barriers and encourage others to speak out.
Joseph Lumbasi, manager of the charity that works to support victims of ritual and organised abuse, said that the figures were shocking and were getting worse.
He said: “There are major taboos that prevent people talking about abuse, but thanks to national cases, people are being encouraged to talk about what they have suffered.”
Izzy’s Promise recently took part in the Scottish Government’s statutory inquiry into historical child abuse in care.
Mr Lumbasi said: “We compiled our results and have forwarded them.
“What we are seeing in Dundee is frightening.” Mr Lumbasi says that three support workers at the charity’s premises on Victoria Road speak to around three people each every day who have turned to them for help.
He said: “We are seeing people from the age of 18 upwards who have horrific stories to tell of abuse as a child. This includes, mental, sexual and physical abuse.
“We are also aware of organised and ritual abuse taking place in Dundee….
Record Australian payout for abused British child migrants
Former British migrants who were physically and sexually assaulted at a notorious school in Australia on Monday won the largest compensation payment for survivors of mass child abuse in the country’s legal history.
A class action lawsuit was brought by almost 150 former residents of Fairbridge Farm School, which housed British child migrants, against the Australian and New South Wales state governments after they were abused between 1938 and 1974.
Slater and Gordon lawyer Roop Sandhu said the Aus$24 million (US$18.3 million) payout marked a major milestone in the acknowledgement of institutional child abuse.
“Our clients have suffered a lifetime of serious physical and psychiatric injuries as a result of their time at Fairbridge,” Sandhu said, adding that it was the largest settlement for survivors of mass child abuse ever in Australia.
“They were all vulnerable children in need of care and protection, but instead they were subjected to horrific physical and sexual abuse, which in many cases has scarred them for life.”
The case was one of the first class actions against an Australian government connected with child migration — a practice under which thousands of underprivileged British children were sent to Australia without their parents last century in the hope of giving them a better life.
It alleged the Fairbridge Foundation, the New South Wales government and the Australian government allowed a system of institutional abuse to develop and persist at the school over decades….
Janner charged with historic child abuse
London (AFP) – Prosecutors on Monday brought 22 charges of abuse against an elderly politician accused of using his position to have sex with young boys.
The prosecution against Lord Greville Janner, a former MP and a member of the House of Lords, represents a victory for campaigners who have demanded tougher action on child abuse.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had initially declined to bring charges against the 86-year-old because he is suffering from Alzheimer’s and was considered too ill to stand trial.
But after intense criticism, director of public prosecutions Alison Saunders announced he has now been charged with offences against nine victims, all but one of them aged 16 or under at the time, relating to alleged incidents between 1963 and 1988.
Janner’s family strongly denies claims that he used his power as Labour MP for Leicester, a town that he represented between 1970 and 1997, to abuse vulnerable boys at a local children’s home.
Prosecutors said Janner would still likely be declared unfit and any trial would therefore not result in any conviction, but said bringing charges was a chance for the alleged victims to be heard in court….
Claims against Janner have fuelled speculation about an alleged paedophile ring at Westminster, which is being examined in a wide-ranging public inquiry into child abuse set up by Prime Minister David Cameron last year….

Allegations fly at heated Westminster child abuse conference

….Rumours have swirled in recent years about a cover-up in the British establishment involving senior politicians and police that has seen prominent figures engaging in child abuse and murder. Police have described evidence from one survivor relating to abuse at the Dolphin Square estate in London and at least three murders “credible and true”.
….Yesterday’s event, arranged by the WhiteFlowers group, was designed to keep up the pressure on home secretary Theresa May regarding the government-led inquiry, as well as stressing the need for solidarity among campaigners. The group is demanding full and equal legal representation for survivors, the amendment of the Official Secrets Act to ensure it does not cover historical allegations of child sex abuse, and greater measures to protect and support whistleblowers, as well as the prompt prosecution of Lord Greville Janner – the former Labour MP accused of being a serial abuser who the director of public prosecutions, Alison Saunders said was not fit to stand trial due to his suffering from dementia – and other high-profile figures suspected of paedophile activities or cover-ups.
The group has recently been vocal in challenging May’s decision to exclude representatives of victims’ groups from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, which has been dogged by controversy after both Baroness Elizabeth Butler-Sloss and Dame Fiona Woolf were forced to resign from chairing it due to their links to establishment figures.
….John Mann MP also spoke, demanding that the Official Secrets Act be lifted. “We will uncover, unmask and embarrass those who knew in detail about the abuse, who made calculated decisions that the state would cover up this abuse,” he said.
….One survivor who was placed in care in homes in Rotherham, Warrington, North Wales and Rochdale, told the audience in an earlier meeting that abuse had taken place in each home. “How was that possible?” he asked. “I would have had to have been the unluckiest kid on the planet for every place they put me in for abuse to happen. That could only have come about with planning.”
Richard Scorer, Head of the Abuse Team at Slater & Gordon law firm which represents a number of victims making allegations against Lord Janner, called for a change in the law which would enforce a legal duty on those working with children to report any knowledge or suspicion of child abuse. He also called for an overhaul of how the criminal justice system treats survivors, explaining that one of the firm’s clients, a victim of the Rochdale child sex abuse ring which came to light in 2008, was cross-examined for 42 days, often just a few feet away from the men who raped her.
The law firm will find out next week whether their request for a review of the decision of the director of public prosecutions not to charge Lord Janner has been successful. A decision not to prosecute the peer would “be a serious miscarriage of justice”, according to Scorer.
“For 25 years Janner was able to rely on networks of support to protect himself, some of which may have been operating from out of this building,” he said.

France investigates claims of CAR child abuse by soldiers 4/29/15
A Parisian prosecutor says an investigation is under way into claims French soldiers in the Central African Republic sexually abused children.
France sent an initial 1,600 troops to the country in December 2013 after violence flared following a coup.
On Wednesday, the Guardian newspaper reported that a United Nations worker was suspended after leaking a report on abuses by French troops.
It says a UN report claimed children as young as nine were abused.
Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office, said an investigation had been under way since July 2014.
The Guardian said that the alleged abuse took place between December 2013 and June 2014 at a centre for internally displaced people in the Central African Republic capital, Bangui.
Quoting an internal UN report, it says that in one case, a nine-year-old boy and his friend were forced to carry out a sex act by two French soldiers….
UN aid worker suspended for leaking report on child abuse by French troops
Anders Kompass said to have passed confidential document to French authorities because of UN’s failure to stop abuse of children in Central African Republic Sandra Laville Wednesday 29 April 2015
A senior United Nations aid worker has been suspended for disclosing to prosecutors an internal report on the sexual abuse of children by French peacekeeping troops in the Central African Republic.
Sources close to the case said Anders Kompass passed the document to the French authorities because of the UN’s failure to take action to stop the abuse. The report documented the sexual exploitation of children as young as nine by French troops stationed in the country as part of international peacekeeping efforts.
Kompass, who is based in Geneva, was suspended from his post as director of field operations last week and accused of leaking a confidential UN report and breaching protocols. He is under investigation by the UN office for internal oversight service (OIOS) amid warnings from a senior official that access to his case must be “severely restricted”. He faces dismissal….
Entitled Sexual Abuse on Children by International Armed Forces and stamped “confidential” on every page, the report details the rape and sodomy of starving and homeless young boys by French peacekeeping troops who were supposed to be protecting them at a centre for internally displaced people in Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic.
Donovan said: “The regular sex abuse by peacekeeping personnel uncovered here and the United Nations’ appalling disregard for victims are stomach-turning, but the awful truth is that this isn’t uncommon. The UN’s instinctive response to sexual violence in its ranks – ignore, deny, cover up, dissemble – must be subjected to a truly independent commission of inquiry with total access, top to bottom, and full subpoena power.”
The UN has faced several scandals in the past relating to its failure to act over paedophile rings operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kosovo and Bosnia. It has also faced allegations of sexual misconduct by its troops in Haiti, Burundi and Liberia….
The children described how they were sexually exploited in return for food and money. One 11-year-old boy said he was abused when he went out looking for food. A nine-year-old described being sexually abused with his friend by two French soldiers at the IDP camp when they went to a checkpoint to look for something to eat.
The child described how the soldiers forced him and his friend to carry out a sex act. The report describes how distressed the child was when disclosing the abuse and how he fled the camp in terror after the assault. Some of the children were able to give good descriptions of the soldiers involved.
In summer 2014, the report was passed to officials within the office of the high commissioner for human rights in Geneva. When nothing happened, Kompass sent the report to the French authorities and they visited Bangui and began an investigation….
Child abuse inquiry judge to investigate Lord Janner allegations
Lowell Goddard has asked director of public prosecutions to hand over files, will talk to Labour peer’s alleged victims and could call on him to give evidence
Josh Halliday Wednesday 29 April 2015
A high court judge is to investigate whether child sexual abuse allegations against Lord Janner were the subject of an establishment cover-up.
Justice Lowell Goddard, the chair of a major independent inquiry into child abuse ordered by the home secretary, Theresa May, will seek evidence from the Labour peer’s alleged victims and may even summon the 86-year-old to give evidence.
The New Zealand judge has also asked Britain’s top prosecutor, Alison Saunders, to hand over all the prosecution files against Janner as part of an “exhaustive and critical examination of the institutional decision-making processes” in the case. She said she would scrutinise three missed opportunities to prosecute Janner by the police or the CPS in 1991, 2002 and 2007 and “whether any inappropriate influence was brought to bear in any effort to shield Lord Janner from prosecution”.
The announcement came after Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, attracted widespread criticism earlier this month when she said there was sufficient evidence to prosecute Janner over 22 alleged sexual offences but that he would not be prosecuted because he has Alzheimer’s disease….
Janner, who has dementia, was accused of carrying out a catalogue of abuse against young boys, and more than a dozen people came forward to claim he abused them during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s….

Long Island shopkeeper admits to sexually abusing employee
Tuesday, April 21, 2015
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — The owner of a Long Island religious supplies store pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexually abusing a teenage employee and then trying to hire someone to kill the victim so he couldn’t testify at trial.
Daniel Miller, 47, admitted in court that he drugged the 17-year-old boy with lorazepam, an anti-anxiety medication, and then sexually abused him while the teen worked at his Santaria store in Inwood in January 2012. Prosecutors said the teen woke up at 4 a.m. the next day at Miller’s home.
While he was in jail and awaiting trial on those charges, Miller allegedly offered to pay $15,000 to have the victim killed and make it look like a cellphone robbery to prevent him from testifying at trial, prosecutors said.
Authorities said Miller also asked a relative to have someone make a Voodoo doll of the victim and stick it with pins and knives and use dirt from the teen’s house and his photo in a ritual that was intended to give the victim cancer.
Miller pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges that include sexual abuse, conspiracy and criminal solicitation and is expected to be sentenced to nine years in prison and 10 years of post-release supervision when he is sentenced in June….
Abused children in Norfolk were ‘sexual playthings’
By Julian Sturdy BBC Look East
27 April 2015
Six women and four men have gone on trial accused of abusing five young children and treating them as “sexual playthings”.
The 10, who face 38 charges, deny playing any part in the sexual abuse in Norfolk, Norwich Crown Court heard.
Prosecutor Angela Rafferty QC told the court the children were “sexually and physically abused and neglected… in the early parts of their lives”.
Nine of the defendants are from Norwich and one is from Romford, London.
Mrs Rafferty said the “dreadful truth” was these five children “became sexual playthings within that group.”…
Lord Greville Janner child sex abuse file ‘lost’ by Home Office

Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders – who ruled Labour peer Janner will not face trial because he has Alzheimer’s – denied having any role in it
A file on Lord Greville Janner is among 114 dossiers on child sex abuse that have gone missing from the Home Office.
Details of the 1986 Janner file are buried in the appendix to the Wanless report, which investigated the missing sex abuse dossiers.
The report, published in November, studied claims that the 114 files disappeared as part of an Establishment cover-up.
And today Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders – who ruled Janner will not face trial because he has Alzheimer’s – denied having any role in it and refused to quit….
Ms Saunders has said that, had he been judged fit to stand trial, Janner, 86, would have been charged with 22 sex offences against nine children from 1969 to 1988.
She said it was not in the public interest to prosecute because of his ill health. But a House of Lords spokesman has confirmed Janner signed a letter requesting a leave of absence this month.
And last March, three months after his home was searched by police, he signed the property over to his three children, putting the £2million house out of reach of potential child abuse victims suing for compensation….
AAP: Peds Serve as Primary Prevention for Child Abuse
Early recognition of child abuse by clinicians can be life-saving.
by Molly Walker
Physical abuse of children and infants, while often difficult to diagnose, can lead to lifelong physical and mental health disorders.
The most common signs of physical abuse are skin injuries, skeletal injuries, thoracoabdominal injuries, and head injuries.
Physical abuse of children and infants is often difficult to diagnose, but can lead to lifelong physical and mental health disorders, according to a new clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The most common signs of physical abuse are skin injuries, skeletal injuries, thoracoabdominal injuries, and head injuries, reported Cindy W. Christian, MD, chairperson of the 2013-2014 AAP Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Because 80% of deaths in child abuse and neglect cases occur in children under 4-years-old, infants and toddlers are at the highest risk for severe and fatal abuse, they wrote in Pediatrics.
The authors acknowledged the difficulty for clinicians to identify physical abuse, because most injuries to children are not due to abuse, and “unusual accidental events happen to children.”
They also said that because so much of a child’s history is reliant on a parent’s report, physicians may not be likely to be critical or skeptical of the information provided….
The authors point out that child abuse and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) can have lifelong effects into adulthood. These events effect how the brain, neuroendocrine stress response, and immune system function, they wrote, and start as early as adolescence. Abused adolescents are more likely to have depression, conduct disorder, drug abuse, and cigarette smoking….

New Lord Greville Janner ‘child abuse’ victims come forward since no charge revelations

It comes after the decision to not prosecute the ex-Labour MP due to his poor health was branded “a disgrace” by one alleged victim.
A number of new alleged victims of Lord Greville Janner have come forward since it was announced he will not be charged with child sex offences, police have revealed.
It comes after the decision to not prosecute the ex-Labour MP due to his poor health was branded “a disgrace” by one alleged victim, who claimed Janner was “being protected” due to his VIP status.
Leicestershire Police had already traced 25 potential victims during a two-year probe codenamed Operation Enamel….
Rape, child abuse and Prince Charles’s former school
One of Scotland’s leading schools is facing claims by former students that they were abused by paedophiles. Alex Renton reveals how the country’s archaic laws are failing to bring them justice
Alex Renton Sunday 12 April 2015
….Gordonstoun was a success, especially after Prince Philip of Greece, now the Duke of Edinburgh, arrived. Other royals followed: five of the Queen’s children and grandchildren went there, despite Charles’s complaints. By the 1970s it was touted as a place for spoilt or wealthy children who needed toughening up – Sean Connery and David Bowie’s sons went, and so did Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter. Physical punishment, strict discipline and cold showers were key to Hahn’s approach to keeping children in line.
….Mutual respect, resilience and trust were the cornerstones of Hahn’s notions of how to educate a child. His ideas have made Gordonstoun one of Britain’s most famous public schools. But a series of complaints sent to me covering 40 years reveal a dark alternative history. Not all of the stories can be detailed here. But, too often to be excused, Gordonstoun and its junior school appear to have let down the trust of parents and failed to respect the rights and needs of children. Predatory paedophiles are a part of the history of many celebrated schools in Britain. But Gordonstoun’s story is particularly urgent because Scotland’s archaic laws around proving sexual assault dissuade victims from coming forward. They can mean predators, who might be brought to trial, remain at large and free to offend.
….Such events and others, coupled with the stream of recent stories about sex scandals and cover-ups in celebrated public schools, sparked talk among Gordonstoun’s ex-pupils. In 2013 some of them began a private Facebook group, discussing things that had happened at the school, “that you don’t see in the brochures and the class photographs”, as one of them put it. Rapes, of boys and girls, were mentioned. Kate started to receive messages from girls she had known, apologising for the gossip and rumours, for the bullying, and for not having done more to help.
The group eventually involved more than 100 ex-pupils. Acting in concert, they presented the school with a list of demands: it should do more to address bullying and sexual abuse, issue an apology to past victims and fund help for them and, notably, promise in future to report any incidents to the police.
John briefly joined the group, but left it, thinking the chatter was futile: “It was mainly about bullying, old classroom rows.” But he had already decided that he had to act on Jones: “I had a duty to make sure this bastard was not still out there doing things to kids.” So in February 2014 he went to the police. Their subsequent investigation stretched as far as New Zealand. Eventually, John was told Derek Jones could not be brought to trial or offend again. He had died in a car crash in Kenya, five years earlier.
But if that was any consolation for John, it was spoilt by the shock of the other information the officer – who has declined to comment – then handed over. Despite Gordonstoun’s solemn assurances, Derek Jones had gone on to teach, and potentially abuse, elsewhere. He had been forced to leave a school in Essex and had then surfaced and taught in Kenya. It is unclear what happened in East Africa, but former colonies there have provided a home for several predatory paedophiles sacked from English private schools – some of whom have gone on to offend again. Scottish police have identified both the Essex and Kenya school where Jones taught, but have refused to name them to the Observer….
Trial to begin for last 3 defendants in FAMU hazing case
By KYLE HIGHTOWER April 20, 2015
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The manslaughter trial of the remaining three former band members charged in the hazing death of a Florida A&M drum major has begun.
Before jury selection, Judge Renee Roche dismissed misdemeanor hazing charges faced by defendants Benjamin McNamee, Aaron Golson and Darryl Cearnel, who are being tried together. Each still faces 15 years on manslaughter and felony hazing counts for the November 2011 death of 26-year-old Robert Champion.
Champion — from Decatur, Georgia — was beaten during a hazing ritual after a football game in November 2011.
Fifteen former band members were charged with manslaughter. Dante Martin, now 27, was convicted last year and is serving six years….
