A horrific hazing ritual ended his life, and his family’s
By Joshua Rhett Miller September 16, 2016
Jordan Preavy had it all as a junior in high school after making the football team. But that dream quickly became a nightmare for the 16-year-old when he was sodomized during a hazing ritual.
Witnesses told police Preavy’s head “snapped back and he looked pained,” yelling “No!” and “Get off,” as he was assaulted through his clothes with a broomstick by at least two older teammates in 2011.
Nearly a year later, just weeks after his 17th birthday, Preavy killed himself….
Preavy’s parents are convinced the incident at Milton High School in Vermont contributed to his decision to take his own life. They’re now suing the school district, alleging it failed to protect their son.
“It’s the only thing that makes sense. Having that sexual abuse in front of his team devastated him. Devastated,” Preavy’s mother, Tracy Stopford, told the network.
ESPN reports that the school district has denied culpability in a court response to the lawsuit, claiming the broom handle did not break Preavy’s clothing.
“It is not likely that Preavy killed himself because on one occasion an object was pressed against his clothing in the buttocks,” the district argued….
Five men ranging in age from 18 to 20 were ultimately charged in connection with incidents at homes and at Milton High School in 2011 and 2012. They have pleaded guilty to various charges, the Associated Press reports.
Preavy’s story was one of three investigated by ESPN, which identified 40 hazing incidents at US schools involving sodomy since 2011, including seven this year. The network also detailed the hazing of former Oak Hills, Calif., football player Josh Villegas and former McGill University football player D’Arcy McKeown….
Hazing – An Outside the Lines Investigation
A troubling trend is plaguing school athletic programs across the country: hazing incidents involving sodomy. Outside the Lines has found more than 40 such incidents since 2011, including seven so far this year.
The majority of these type of incidents likely never get reported, experts say, and no state or federal agency tracks them. A code of silence often prevents witnesses and victims from speaking out — though some do.
These are the stories of three victims….
In these three cases, school administrators often minimized the events or were ill-equipped to investigate what happened. The results were long-lasting and traumatic: “I’m always looking over my shoulder,” Josh Villegas says. “I’m always on edge.”….
“It’s become much more violent, sexually, since the internet,” says psychologist Susan Lipkins, who focuses her work on hazing. She believes that kids have become desensitized to sexuality and see this form of hazing as a way to humiliate others. “And I think with each year it gets worse and worse.” ….
What has to change? Lipkins says there needs to be greater awareness and accountability, so that victims feel more comfortable coming forward and going to the courts. “If we can’t break the code of silence, we’re not going to change things.”….

One in five Peace Corps volunteers sexually assaulted blamed, punished for reporting sexual assault?, Fraternity president testifies against brothers in pledge’s death

Peace Corps volunteers blamed, punished for reporting sexual assault?
CBS News November 30, 2015
Nearly 7,000 Peace Corps currently serve in about 65 countries. Roughly one in five of them is sexually assaulted during that service, according to the results of a recent anonymous Peace Corps safety questionnaire, obtained exclusively by CBS News.
The report also shows that nearly half don’t report the assaults.
Pressure to change a culture of victim-blaming goes back years, but some survivors still claim they are blamed or punished. One volunteer wrote that in reporting an assault, “I made myself a target.”
“My thought was they’re going to rape me. These men are going to rape me,” said Danae Smith, who volunteered in the remote Dominican Republic town of Los Mosquitos for eight months.
In April, two men with machetes forced the 23-year-old off the village’s main road. Smith got away and reported the assault to the Peace Corps and within a week, the agency told her she was going home.
“They also told me that my attack had occurred because I had been walking in my site and that as a volunteer, it was my job to have been more proactive to prevent it from happening,” Smith said.
More than 500 volunteers have reported experiencing a sexual assault in a little over two years. CBS News spoke with nearly a dozen who questioned how their recent cases were handled. They told us they felt criticized and were threatened they would be fired….
Inspector General reports show multiple cases of Peace Corps personnel – accused in sexual assaults – resigning ahead of administrative action, then being allowed to re-apply to the agency.
A 2014 Inspector General report warned the Peace Corps’ screening process for re-hiring was not detecting past misconduct.
One volunteer who admitted to violating the agency’s sexual assault policy was later hired to work at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
“That person is no longer employed by Peace Corps. But I will also say that we are putting in place systems, mechanisms that will make sure that that does not happen again in the future,” said Peace Corps director Carrie Hessler-Radelet. “This is unacceptable to us and we are trying to change the culture.”….
Fraternity president testifies against brothers in pledge’s death
November 30, 2015
STROUDSBURG, Pa. — A Pennsylvania college fraternity president says he and four others charged in a pledge’s death during a hazing ritual in the Poconos tried to “cover it all up” when they met weeks later.
Daniel Li is cooperating against four Baruch College fraternity brothers charged with third-degree murder in the beating death of 18-year-old Chun Michael Deng.
Li says the Pi Delta Psi brothers gathered in New York afterward to decide what to tell police and their attorneys.
Defense lawyer Steven Brill, who represents co-defendant Sheldon Wong, says no one initially thought the injuries to Deng were life-threatening.
Brill calls the 2013 death accidental. Other defendants are Charles Lai, Kenny Kwan and Raymond Lam.
Police say fraternity members blindfolded Deng, forcing him to wear a heavy backpack, and then repeatedly tackled him during the hazing ritual, known as glass ceiling.
Deng fell unconscious and was carried inside the house while fraternity members changed his clothes and did an Internet search of his symptoms, waiting an hour before taking him to the hospital, according to court documents. Deng, who suffered a brain injury, died a day later….

Dennis Hastert pleads not guilty on all counts
By Chris Frates, Bill Kirkos and Tom LoBianco, CNN June 9, 2015
Washington (CNN) Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert has pleaded not guilty to all charges related to lying to the FBI about $3.5 million he agreed to pay to an undisclosed subject to “cover up past misconduct.”
Hastert was arraigned in court in Chicago on Tuesday afternoon, amid reports he allegedly sexually abused former students.
The former House speaker has hired high-profile white collar crime lawyer Thomas Green to defend him in court. Green has defended clients involved in Watergate, Iran Contra and Whitewater.
Judge Thomas Durkin is allowing Hastert to be released on a pretrial release. Hastert had to sign and appearance bond of $4,500 which he forfeits if he fails to appear.
He was also barred from carrying firearms, had to surrender his passport and cooperate in giving a sample of DNA.
Hastert faces charges of lying to federal investigators and hiding bank transactions as part of a plan to pay $3.5 million in hush money to one of his victims, identified only as “Individual A”. Law enforcement sources confirmed a second alleged victim was interviewed by them and the sister of a third alleged victim told ABC that her brother had been molested by Hastert….
Facebook Frat Whistleblower: Penn State Did Nothing for Months After I Told Them About Abuse
James Vivenzio filed a lawsuit against Penn State today in Philadelphia court. The school “strongly disputes” his allegations.
By Holly Otterbein June 8, 2015
Did Penn State learn anything in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal?
Not if you believe a lawsuit filed Monday on behalf of James Vivenzio, the 21-year-old whistleblower who told authorities this January that the fraternity Kappa Delta Rho was running a secret Facebook page where members allegedly posted images of nude, unconscious women, drug sales and hazing.
At a Monday press conference about his lawsuit, Vivenzio, a former KDR brother, and his lawyer Aaron Freiwald made a number of stunning allegations about the frat and Penn State. Perhaps the most shocking among them is that Vivenzio said he told university officials about KDR’s alleged Facebook page months before he went to the police, but they did nothing.
Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said in a statement that the university “strongly disputes the allegations in this complaint.”….
Vivenzio said that he initially told university officials about KDR’s alleged hazing by calling Penn State’s anonymous hazing hotline. Freiwald said that “was very quickly leaked, he found out, to all the members of the fraternity, and an effort was then made within the fraternity house to figure out who the ‘rat’ was.”
Then, in April 2014 — about eight months before Vivenzio went to the police — he said he met with Danny Shaha, a senior investigator in Penn State’s Office of Student Conduct, to discuss his experience at KDR. He said he told Shaha about the alleged hazing, drug sales and Facebook pages, and showed him reams of evidence, including text messages and screen shots. Since then, no one from Penn State has met with Vivenzio to discuss his allegations or to collect the evidence to this day, according to the lawsuit. Freiwald said the first time the university took action to address Vivenzio’s concerns, as far as he knows, was last month, when it announced it was shutting down the the KDR chapter for three years. PSU vehemently denied this.
Spokeswoman Powers said the school “offered [Vivenzio] extraordinary assistance on numerous occasions,” but “neither he nor his family were willing to file a complaint, provide documentation, speak with State College police or participate in pursuing the formal disciplinary process available to them, despite repeated encouragement from university staff.” She also said Vivenzio did not tell university officials about the alleged Facebook page.
Finally, Vivenzio decided to tell the police about his concerns in January of this year. His allegations prompted an investigation into KDR, which is ongoing. Still, according to Freiwald, police only contacted him for a follow-up meeting as recently as a couple weeks ago. Due to scheduling conflicts, he said, they still have not met.

Polish priest jailed for seven years over child sex abuse
WARSAW Wed Mar 25, 2015
(Reuters) – A Catholic priest accused of sexually abusing children in Poland and the Dominican Republic was sentenced to seven years in jail by a Polish court on Wednesday….
The priest, who under Polish law can only be identified as Wojciech G., was suspended by his religious order in the rural Dominican parish of Juncalito last year after local residents accused him of molesting altar boys, according to the church.
He was arrested after returning to his native Poland and was tried on 10 charges relating to child sex abuse and possessing pornographic images of children. The charges carried a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail.
Earlier in March, the priest offered to serve a seven-year jail term, under a part of Polish law that lets defendants file such motions without admitting guilt. Polish media have quoted the priest as saying he is not guilty….
The Vatican last year arrested a defrocked Polish archbishop, Jozef Wesolowski, former Vatican ambassador to the Dominican Republic, after he was accused of having sex with children during his posting.
A church tribunal had previously ordered Wesolowski to be stripped of the priesthood.
Dartmouth ‘Animal House’ fraternity probed for branding rite
By John Lauerman and Michael McDonald, Bloomberg News March 25, 2015
Dartmouth College is investigating its Alpha Delta fraternity, inspiration for the movie “Animal House,” for branding students’ flesh as part of an initiation ritual.
The accusations, if proven by the school, could result in probation, suspension or permanent loss of recognition for the fraternity. The alleged incident occurred in the fall, Dartmouth said in a statement. The school didn’t give further details.
Colleges across the U.S. have punished fraternities in recent weeks amid allegations of racism, hazing and offensive behavior toward women. Philip Hanlon, Dartmouth’s president since 2013 and a former Alpha Delta member, has defended fraternity life while condemning “extreme behavior” that he said hurts the Hanover, New Hampshire, college and its reputation.
Alpha Delta “has a significant three-year history of disciplinary violations, including hazing, underage service of alcohol and hosting unregistered events,” the college said in the statement….
Father Charlie had curious hands, Terminated Chi Phi fraternity put pledge in casket, Fukuoka bans yakuza finger cutting
March 25, 2015 Comments Off on Father Charlie had curious hands, Terminated Chi Phi fraternity put pledge in casket, Fukuoka bans yakuza finger cutting
“(Father) Sylvestre, like most predators, had been cunning. His public demonstrativeness cast doubt on anything he might be accused of doing behind closed doors, especially because he was such a powerful and beloved man.”
Father Charlie had curious hands
In an exclusive story for the Star, bestselling novelist Lori Lansens recalls her childhood in Chatham, Ont., and her early encounters with Father Charles Sylvestre, later convicted of abusing dozens of girls.
Author Lori Lansens, pictured at her home in California. “God and Father Charlie were inextricably bound for me then,” she writes, reflecting on her childhood in Chatham, Ont. “That confusing incident in the rectory stole them both, and made me question everything that I’d ever believed.”
By: Lori Lansens Special to the Star, Published on Fri Mar 20 2015….
To hundreds of children during his lengthy residence at St. Ursula’s Parish, the priest was Father Charlie. A charismatic leader with sympathetic eyes, he roamed the hallways of our school and often walked the yard at recess, ready with his warm embrace. Sometimes he came into our classrooms and the teachers would sneak off for a cigarette break — so many of them smoked back then. He’d sit in the teacher’s big chair, gathering us close as we competed for the spot on his lap. I prayed that Father Charlie would favour me, as he clearly seemed to favour certain little girls….
When I was around 10 years old, I began to notice that Father Charlie had curious hands. They wouldn’t rest on a young girl’s shoulder, but encircle her waist or creep up her back, or touch the hair around her collarbone or at the back of her neck. He gave a lot of shoulder massages too. Had he always done that? Had my perception of his touching changed as I’d matured? I felt guilty and ashamed for wondering. He was a priest after all, and so it followed, in my young mind, that he was innocent and naive.
I was in the hallway with one of my Grade 5 classmates when Father Charlie appeared one day, spreading his arms to embrace us as he’d done since we were small children. He complimented my friend, an early bloomer, on her shamrock-patterned T-shirt as I seethed with envy. Then the priest fixed his gaze on her budding breasts and raised his index finger to touch her nipple, slowly tracing a series of shamrock graphics there as I watched in silent horror…..
(Somewhere around Grade 7, rumours had begun to circulate about our beloved Father Charlie. Maybe there had always been rumours and we just hadn’t heard them. Some of the girls had nicknames for him — Father Feeler and Sylvestre the Molester. Lisa and I didn’t believe the talk, which was usually vague and improbable sounding. His awkward affections had just been misunderstood, we insisted.)….
Then we pulled open the closet door to see a hefty, barely concealed collection of Playboy magazines. Lisa and I clutched each other, screaming silently.
A priest with Playboy? We thought it was hilarious. At least that was our first reaction. Then unease set in. The alcohol and the magazines were nothing we hadn’t glimpsed before at the homes of friends with older brothers, but this was Father Charlie….
I stiffened when he stepped up behind me and cringed when he touched a ringlet at my nape. I didn’t dare catch Lisa’s eye. The priest asked us questions as he played with my curls and I pretended not to notice when he pressed his pelvis into my bony upper back, concerned with how embarrassed Father Charlie would be when he realized that his private parts were touching my spine. When he put his big hands on my shoulders and began a too-rough massage, I seized up. His breath reeked of whiskey and made me feel sick.
He told me to relax but I couldn’t let my shoulders down. His hands were digging below my collarbone into the flesh of my tender chest and it hurt. I tried to unclench and felt awful for disappointing him, even as I wondered if it was possible that he was bumping his genitals against my back intentionally…..
I was in my late 30s and living in Toronto when two brave women whose names I knew, one a classmate’s sister, stepped forward, charging that Charles Sylvestre had abused them when they were students at St. Ursula School. The lawsuit against the London Diocese made headline news. The floodgates opened and more victims came forward from St. Ursula, and other parishes too, in a serial abuse career spanning four decades and five parishes. Charles Sylvestre was charged with fondling, digital penetration and rape in cases involving dozens of little girls. In many instances the abuse began when girls were asked to come and fold bulletins at the rectory after school, or to count the collection, or help with a chore. Sometimes he assaulted the children during confession.
Sylvestre, like most predators, had been cunning. His public demonstrativeness cast doubt on anything he might be accused of doing behind closed doors, especially because he was such a powerful and beloved man. The priest pleaded guilty to 47 counts of sexual assault and died a few months into a three-year prison term. But there were many more victims, other women who have come forward and continue to launch lawsuits against the institutions responsible for keeping pedophiles like Charles Sylvestre in positions of power over children…..
Records: Terminated Chi Phi fraternity put pledge in casket
University of Wisconsin cut ties with chapter after hazing incident landed student in hospital
by Rachael Lallensack · Mar 23, 2015
Chi Phi’s once-secret initiation ceremony was the cause for the chapter’s termination, records show.
A Chi Phi fraternity pledge who entered a “ritual casket” during their initiation ceremony went to the hospital after a member “curb stomped” the casket and broke through it, according to records obtained by The Badger Herald. The incident sparked a University of Wisconsin investigation that ultimately led to the fraternity’s March 18 termination.
Committee on Student Organizations unanimously approved Chi Phi’s termination due to hazing violations. CSO’s investigation began after the committee received a report on Jan. 20 with the allegations….
CSO found the fraternity had violated four of 12 items on the Registered Student Organization code of conduct list, three of which prohibit acts of violence, endangerment, sexual assault and substance abuse.
The decision is based off the January report and interviews that the Dean of Students’ office conducted….
The committee found Chi Phi caused “serious physical, psychological and emotional injuries” during its initiation. Among the activities that caused these injuries, CSO cited “food deprivation, stints of hooded isolation, loss of personal liberty, sleeping in a confined attic” and the ritual casket ceremony.
About 20 new members were “crammed” into space in the attic, Knueve said.
“The Committee, without hesitation, found that all aspects of the hazing to be egregious in nature, and unanimously believed that these actions demonstrated severe organizational misconduct,” CSO wrote in its decision. “The physical and emotional harm done to the new members of Chi Phi, whether they agreed to the hazing activities or not, is inexcusable by any standard, and has no place at the University of Wisconsin.”….

Members of the Dojin-kai are banned from coercing fellow gangsters into cutting off their fingers
FUKUOKA (TR) – Following recent incidents of abuse, the Fukuoka Prefectural Public Safety Commission on Tuesday announced a ban on a ritualistic form of atonement for one of the prefecture’s organized crime groups, reports the Nishi Nippon Shimbun (March 24).
In a meeting with a 41-year-old upper member of the Dojin-kai, whose headquarters is located in Kurume City, the commission said members of the gang would be prohibited from facilitating the removal of a finger of a fellow gangster.
Under the mandate, the act of coercion, whether in a meeting or through telephone or letter, and the provision of a cutting tool are banned acts.
The initiative, based on the Anti-Organized Crime Law enacted in 1991, is a nationwide first. The ban extends for a period of one year.
In the world of organized crime, the finger-cutting custom is a deep-rooted act to show responsibility for a transgression….

Teal Swan’s story of Satanic Ritual abuse PART ONE
By Christopher Oswalt Oct 30, 2014
The topic of Satanic Ritual has long been taboo. Few speak of the underground world. Criminal cases are rare. One former Idaho woman says she was a victim of Satanic Ritual abuse while growing up in Eastern Idaho.
Teal Swan says her life consisted of abuse, both physically and sexual and murder….
Swan says she witnessed the person who took her into the cult kill five children. She knew what she was witnessing was not right, but she feared escaping.
“One of the first programs that was done on me, was he had me breathing and go through and elaborate visualization of my home having just told. ‘Hey you just told people about me. You just told who you really are. So what do you see hanging from the rafters? I shrug my shoulders. He said ‘Do you see that is your mother? Do you see that her blood is all over the floor?”
What Teal shared with Oswalt is the focus of dozens of investigations around the country. Lt. Larry Jones, a former Boise Police officer, was instrumental in a Department of Justice report on cult rituals. The report admits these crimes are hard to prove, but says it is imperative the cases be solved. In most documented cases of ritual abuse, the FBI says it is often a close friend or family who commits the crime.
Teal told Oswalt that she truly believes what she shared happened to her….
Teal says she was taken in at age six. She escaped during a ritual in Eastern Idaho when she was 19. She left the state and found refuge with her friend in Utah. Teal says things started to turn around from there, but it took time….
Teals interview with FOX/ABC in Boise, Idaho discussing the prevalence of Satanic Ritual Abuse. First aired on 30th October 2014.
Ex-FAMU band member convicted in hazing death
By Crimesider Staff AP October 31, 2014
ORLANDO, Fla. – A jury has convicted a former Florida A&M University band member of manslaughter and felony hazing in the death of a drum major who prosecutors say was brutally beaten during a hazing ritual aboard a bus.
The jury convicted 27-year-old Dante Martin Friday of Robert Champion’s death after deliberating for a short time. The charge carries a punishment of up to 15 years in prison. The 26-year-old Champion died almost three years ago in Orlando….
Prosecutors said Martin was the ringleader of the hazing. A medical examiner said Champion died of internal bleeding caused by severe bruising.

Mama June’s other daughter was present during sister’s sexual abuse October 29, 2014
More disturbing details have emerged about the abuse June “Mama June” Shannon’s kids suffered at the hands of her then-live-in boyfriend Mark McDaniel.
According to newly released court documents, not just Anna Cardwell- – who has spoken about McDaniel molesting her– was affected by the pedophile her mother was dating. The documents posted by Radar Online reveal Shannon’s then three-year-old daughter had to watch McDaniel sexually abuse her older sister.
A police report from 2004 details an interview Cardwell, now 20, had with an official from the Division of Family and Children Services. In the interview, Cardwell stated that she was forced to have sex with McDaniel.
“Anna then stated that her sister… is in the bed with them when this is going on,” the court documents detail….
Cardwell, who now has a child of her own, told People magazine her mother didn’t believe her when she spoke out about the abuse. According to court documents, she first revealed what she had gone through to a teacher at her school.
“A week or so after it happened, I talked to Mama and she was upset, crying and saying, ‘I don’t believe you,'” she recalled. “And I was like, ‘Mama, he did that to me and I can’t do anything about it. You were never there to see it. You were always at work.'”
McDaniel went to jail for aggravated child molestation and was released in March. He has since been photographed with June Shannon, which prompted TLC to cancel “Honey Boo Boo.”
Witnesses: FAMU hazing suspect led ritual on bus
Wednesday, October 29, 2014
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Florida A&M band member being tried on hazing charges in the death of a drum major was the ring leader and decided who could participate in the initiation ritual, two former band members said Wednesday.
Former band member Lizette Sanchez testified that Dante Martin decided who was allowed to participate in the hazing ritual known as “crossing Bus C.” She said she initially decided she wasn’t going to take part her sophomore year in 2011, but changed her mind in an effort to end shunning from older band members who called her a “bad upperclassman” for not having done it.
“I felt like I was breaking a tradition,” Sanchez said.
She completed the ritual shortly before Robert Champion of Decatur, Georgia, went through it following a football game in November 2011. Champion died from injuries sustained during the ritual, which involved getting kicked, punched and hit with band instruments. Martin is charged with manslaughter and hazing in the incident….
