Child abuse was streamed live to gang, jury hears
10 April 2015
Paedophiles who raped and abused a baby and a young boy streamed attacks online for other members of an alleged child sex ring to watch, a court has heard.
Those involved – who preyed on young families – travelled long distances to carry out attacks together, Bristol Crown Court was told.
Attacks were streamed live using hi-tech video software, prosecutors said.
Matthew Stansfield, 34, from Hampshire, and John Denham, 49, from Wiltshire, both deny conspiring to rape a child.
Prosecutor Robert Davies told the jury that the evidence in the case would “take you into a world you wish did not exist”.
“The evidence exposes the shocking interest a group of men had in sexually abusing children and babies – particularly pre-school children and babies,” he said.
“A real baby was for certain abused and raped by some of those involved.”….
They would connect to the internet using the “dark web” – hiding their online activity – the jury heard….

Tor’s most visited hidden sites host child abuse images
By Mark Ward Technology correspondent, BBC News 30 December 2014
Most traffic to sites hidden on the Tor network go to those dealing in images of child sexual abuse a study suggests. The six-month study sought to catalogue hidden services on the so-called “dark net” and work out which were the most popular.
It found lots of sites peddling illegal drugs but the most popular were those involved with abuse.
However, the researcher behind the study said it was hard to conclude that people were behind all the visits.
Tor, or The Onion Router, is an anonymising system that lets people use the web without revealing who they are or which country they are in. The anonymity offered by the network has encouraged many people to set up hidden .onion sites that offer content, services and goods that it is illegal to sell openly….
Although the number of sites dealing in images of abuse on Tor is small, traffic to them dwarfs that going to other sites, said Dr Owen. About 75% of the traffic observed in the study ended up at abuse sites, said Dr Owen….
Police investigating 718 cases of child abuse in Northern Ireland
And calls to local NSPCC helpline show sharp rise
524 individuals have contacted the inquiry into historical abuse.
By Adrian Rutherford – 30 December 2014
Officers are probing 718 “live” cases where the victim was aged under 18.
The figure is thought to include a number of historic allegations relating to children’s care homes.
It comes as a leading charity revealed it has seen the number of calls to a specialist helpline jump by almost a quarter in the last year.
The issue of child abuse has been in the headlines throughout 2014. A State inquiry into historical abuse in Northern Ireland, chaired by retired judge Sir Anthony Hart, opened in January. The inquiry, which has so far been contacted by 524 individuals, has already heard harrowing testimonies from victims.
And in November a report estimated that up to 145 children were at significant risk of exploitation in Northern Ireland….
The paper by Professor Kathleen Marshall revealed paramilitaries were using fear and intimidation to sexually exploit children. It also uncovered cases involving the military, revealing that soldiers had been disciplined for smuggling girls into two different barracks in the last three years….
The Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) is examining allegations of child abuse in children’s homes and other residential institutions between 1922 and 1995. It is the biggest child abuse public inquiry ever held in the UK, having been contacted by 524 people who said they were abused in childhood. Most complainants are from the UK, 65 are from Australia and 26 from the Irish Republic.
The HIA inquiry was set up by the First and Deputy First Minister in May 2012. Its aim is to establish if there were “systemic failings by institutions or the state in their duties towards those children in their care”.

(Reuters) – A long-awaited probe into the investigation of former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted in 2012 of sexually abusing children, will be released early next week, Pennsylvania authorities said on Friday.
Sandusky, the once-legendary assistant football coach, was convicted in 2012 of abusing 10 boys from 1994 to 2009, some in the Penn State showers, and is serving 30 to 60 years in prison. In 2013, the school agreed to pay $59.7 million to the victims.

Dark net ‘used by tens of thousands of paedophiles’
By Angus Crawford BBC News 19 June 2014
Tens of thousands of paedophiles are using the so-called dark net to trade images of sexual abuse, an investigation by BBC News indicates.
One site receives as many as 500 page views per second, its founder says.
Figures from another site suggest Brits are heavily involved in producing and distributing illegal obscene images.
Britain’s National Crime Agency warned in its 2014 threat assessment that abusers were turning to anonymous sites and encryption technology.
The dark net is the term used to refer to parts of the internet that are hidden and can be hard to access without special software.
One of the most popular products used to access such areas is called the TorBrowser….
Paedophile use of dark net increases for child abuse images
By Barclay Ballard 6/20/14
Tens of thousands of paedophiles are using the dark net to circulate images of sexual abuse, according to a report by the BBC.
The National Crime Agency said that abusers were increasingly turning to encryption software to maintain anonymity. The dark net is a hidden part of the Internet which can only be accessed by special software, one of the most popular of which is the TorBrowser.
This enables people to use Tor, an “onion-routing” system, which bounces encrypted data through several randomly selected servers on the network, making a PC’s net address untraceable….
During the BBC investigation, the broadcaster contacted an active paedophile who ran one of the illegal chat rooms, until it closed in May 2014.
“We had over 40,000 user accounts on the site. We used to get sometimes 500 page views per second. My own collection is 12 gigabytes”, he said….
Anti-paedophile police fight child porn ‘epidemic’
By Angus Crawford BBC News 18 June 2014
The internet trade in images that show child sex abuse is now “an epidemic”, according to the head of the global initiative to combat the problem.
Police officers from around the world serve on the Virtual Global Taskforce.
Its chairman, Ian Quinn, tells the BBC there has been an “explosion” in cases handled by US authorities.
The US alone has 61 Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) units, each made up of state, local police and federal agents….
Online images accumulate
