Family of ranchers who inspired Ore. militia takeover accused of abusing teen relative; grandmother denies claims, calling boy ‘disturbed’ BY Laura Bult, Nicole Hensley NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Tuesday, January 5, 2016
A family of embattled ranchers whose beef with the government inspired the armed takeover of a wildlife refuge in Oregon were once accused of repeatedly abusing a 16-year-old relative — including scraping his chest raw with sandpaper.
OREGON MILITIA FAMILY CITES MORMONISM FOR ARMED CONFLICTS
Dusty Hammond was punched to the ground, forced to hike 10 miles to a family ranch and ordered to eat chewing tobacco, according to a 2004 police report against uncle Steven Hammond and grandfather Dwight Hammond Jr., who surrendered to federal authorities Monday on a 2012 arson conviction….
Steven Hammond used sandpaper to erase a homebrew tattoo from Dusty’s chest. The coarse abrasive left the rancher’s nephew with twin scabs.
Dusty refused to cry during the 10 minutes his uncle spent scraping away the initials “J” and “S,” which the teen had carved using a paperclip. If he had shed a tear, Steven Hammond would have kept going, he told a Harney County deputy at the time of the inquiry.
Dusty’s punishment was requested by his grandparents, Dwight and Susan Hammond, who witnessed the abuse. Steven Hammond later defended it as an attempt “to teach Dusty to respect his body.”
When it was over, Dusty’s grandmother, Susan Hammond, told him to clean his bleeding wounds with alcohol and “not to have a pity party.”….
The family behind the Oregon militia cites Mormon beliefs for armed conflicts with the government
BY Jason Silverstein NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, January 4, 2016
The menacing militia that has taken over a federal building in Oregon for three days (and counting) appears to be under an unlikely influence: Mormonism.
The Bundy family — a rancher clan with two brothers leading the Oregon siege and a history of flare-ups with the feds — have been known to cite their Mormon beliefs as justification for firearm-filled feuds with the government….
The Bundy brothers have not cited Mormonism during their siege, and Cliven — despite his public support for the Hammonds — has distanced himself from the armed takeover….
Mormon leaders to Oregon militia: Your religion isn’t with you
By PEGGY FLETCHER STACK The Salt Lake Tribune Jan 05 2016
If Ammon Bundy and other Mormons involved in taking over a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon believe their religion is backing them, they should reconsider.
Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “strongly condemn the armed seizure of the facility,” spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a news release Monday, “and are deeply troubled by the reports that those who have seized the facility suggest that they are doing so based on scriptural principles.”
The release further states that “this armed occupation can in no way be justified on a scriptural basis.”
Americans “are privileged to live in a nation where conflicts with government or private groups can — and should — be settled using peaceful means, according to the laws of the land.”…,
Bill Cosby won’t be charged in two sexual assault cases in Los Angeles
By Jean Casarez and Steve Almasy, CNN Wed January 6, 2016
CNN)Bill Cosby won’t be charged in two cases investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, the DA announced Wednesday.
According to a charge evaluation sheet, prosecutors think neither of the two allegations could have resulted in charges within the statute of limitations.
The accusers, listed as Jane Does No. 1 and No. 2, had accused Cosby of sexual assault.
“We are satisfied that the Los Angeles DA’s office fully and fairly evaluated all the facts and evidence, and came to the right conclusion,” said Chris Tayback, a lawyer for Cosby.
Jane Doe No. 2 was identified by her lawyer as Chloe Goins, who accused the 78-year-old comedian of drugging her and sexually assaulting her at the Playboy Mansion in August 2008.
Prosecutors in District Attorney Jackie Lacey’s office said the two potential criminal offenses described by Jane Doe No. 2 would be misdemeanors, and they were barred by the statute of limitations from prosecuting.
The office looked at possible felonies, such as sexual battery by restraint, but said the evidence was insufficient to prove a crime was committed….
U.N. Peacekeeping in Crisis as Fresh Child Abuse Allegations Emerge in CAR
By Conor Gaffey On 1/6/16
United Nations (U.N.) peacekeeping personnel must lose their status as “a privileged class,” according to a former senior U.N. official, after fresh allegations of sexual abuse of minors by peacekeepers in Central African Republic (CAR) emerged.
The U.N. peacekeeping mission in CAR—known as MINUSCA— said on Tuesday that it was investigating allegations concerning sexual exploitation and abuse of minors, as well as other misconduct, by peacekeepers and international forces. The U.N. launched an investigation into its mission in CAR in June 2015 after allegations a peacekeeper sexually abused a young girl. Former colonial power France has also investigated claims of child abuse by its soldiers stationed in CAR .
MINUSCA said that staff from the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the capital Bangui had paid four visits to four alleged child victims of abuse, who have been provided with medical treatment and psychosocial assessments. MINUSCA declined to specify which countries the accused peacekeepers came from or how many were involved in the allegations. Unnamed sources told AFP that the peacekeepers came from Gabon, Egypt and Morocco, and AFP reported that the allegations brings the total number of sexual abuse cases against U.N. peacekeepers in CAR to 26….

Bill Cosby charged with felony sexual assault in Pennsylvania
NORRISTOWN, Pa. By Daniel Kelley Wed Dec 30, 2015
Bill Cosby was charged on Wednesday with sexually assaulting a woman after plying her with drugs and alcohol in 2004, marking the only criminal case against the once-beloved performer whose father-figure persona has been tainted by dozens of misconduct accusations.
Cosby, 78, walking with a cane and accompanied by two lawyers, appeared for his arraignment hours later at a courthouse in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, where he posted a $1 million bond, turned over his passport and was ordered to avoid any contact with his accuser.
Smiling and politely thanking District Court Judge Elizabeth McHugh at the end of the brief proceeding, Cosby left the courthouse and was driven to a nearby police precinct to be finger-printed and booked.
He emerged from the police station 10 minutes later and was whisked away in the same black sport utility vehicle that had delivered him to the courthouse. He made no statements as a throng of reporters shouted questions at him.
He is due to return to court on Jan. 14 for a preliminary hearing.
The case against Cosby was filed just before the statute of limitations deadline for criminal prosecution was due to lapse in January. The charge stems from allegations leveled by Andrea Constand, who settled a civil case against Cosby for an undisclosed sum in 2006.
“Today, after examination of all the evidence, we are able to seek justice on behalf of the victim,” Kevin Steele, the newly elected district attorney for Montgomery County, told an earlier news conference. Steele made a campaign issue of his intent to prosecute Cosby.
Constand, a former basketball team manager at Temple University in Philadelphia, Cosby’s alma mater, is one of more than 50 women who have publicly accused the star of sexually assaulting them in incidents dating back decades.
Cosby has not entered a plea in Wednesday’s case. But he and his lawyers, while acknowledging marital infidelity on his part, have consistently denied any allegations of sexual misconduct….
South Korea, Japan reach agreement on ‘comfort women’
By Holly Yan, KJ Kwon, Junko Ogura and Tiffany Ap, CNN
Tue December 29, 2015
(CNN) Japan and South Korea have reached an agreement over the long-standing issue of “comfort women,” a term that describes sex slaves used by the Japanese military during World War II.
Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said his government will give 1 billion yen ($8.3 million) to a fund to help those who suffered.
South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said that as long as Tokyo sticks to its side of the deal, Seoul will consider the issue “irreversibly” resolved.
In addition, the two governments “will refrain from criticizing and blaming each other in the international society, including the United Nations,” Yun said at a joint news conference Monday.
Kishida said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe “expresses anew his most sincere apologies and remorse to all the women who underwent immeasurable and painful experiences and suffered incurable physical and psychological wounds as comfort women.”
Abe later stated himself: “I think we did our duty for the current generation by reaching this final and irreversible resolution before the end of the 70th year since the war.”….
But an advocacy group for former comfort women said the deal announced Monday is “a diplomatic humiliation.”
“Although the Japanese government announced that it ‘feels (its) responsibilities,’ the statement lacks the acknowledgment of the fact that the colonial government and its military had committed a systematic crime,” said the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery. “The government had not just been simply involved but actively initiated the activities which were criminal and illegal.”
The group took issue that it did not address the issue of Japanese history textbooks glossing over the scope of the war crimes…..
China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the forced recruitment of the “comfort women” was a grave crime against humanity.
“The Chinese side always maintains that the Japanese side should face up to and reflect upon its history of aggression and properly deal with the relevant issue with a sense of responsibility.”
China, which was also occupied by Japan prior to and during the World War II has long been critical of its neighbor’s role in the war and its apparent lack of remorse for war crimes following defeat in 1945….

Court orders Bill Cosby deposition in Dickinson case
3 November 2015
Bill Cosby and his former lawyer have been ordered to give a sworn out-of-court testimony in the defamation case brought by Janice Dickinson.
The ex-supermodel alleged that they falsely called her a liar after she claimed the comedian sexually assaulted her three decades ago.
Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled Cosby and his former lawyer Martin Singer must give sworn depositions before 25 November.
Cosby’s lawyers said they would appeal….
More than 50 women have accused the comedian of sexual assault. He has never been charged for any of the alleged crimes. In most cases, the alleged incidents date back decades, meaning they fall outside the time limit for legal action.
Reuters said it is the second time in two months that Cosby will be required to testify under oath in response to a complaint of sexual misconduct against him.
Mr Singer, an LA lawyer, represented Cosby until he was replaced last month with a new legal team.
Last year, Dickinson had claimed Cosby drugged and raped her in a hotel in Lake Tahoe in 1982.
Speaking at the time, Mr Singer labelled Dickinson’s allegations as “false and outlandish”.
Bill Cosby ‘accused of attacking his own children’s nanny’, as he continues to deny sexual assault allegations
3 Nov 2015 By Rebecca Pocklington
The comedian has been accused of assaulting several women, but has so far denied all the allegations put against him
Bill Cosby was accused of assaulting his children’s former nanny, it has been claimed.
The comedian, 78, has strenuously denied allegations of rape and sexual assault brought against him by a number of women, and now a new report claims his own children’s nanny made shock allegations against him too.
According to Radar Online, Cosby’s daughter Ensa revealed the allegations to a friend, claiming the incident occurred in 1997.
“Ensa said it was an unwanted sexual advance, and [the nanny] was hysterical,” a source – who is claimed to have passed a polygraph test – told the site….

By Dana Ford, CNN Thu August 20, 2015
(CNN) Reality TV star Josh Duggar is apologizing after being outed as one of the 32 million people who used the cheating website Ashley Madison.
Hackers stole customers’ information from the website and released it to the public this week, exposing something Duggar tried to keep secret.
“I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife,” Duggar said in a statement Thursday….
According to an analysis from the cybersecurity company Trustify, Duggar paid Ashley Madison some $986 between 2012 and 2015. He used the name, josh_the_man, and described himself as an “attached male seeking female,” according to the analysis….
Two New Women Accuse Bill Cosby of Sexual Assault
By Alexandra Hurtado 08/20/2015
The list of women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault grew Thursday, with two new women publicly coming forward in New York City with their stories.
The two accusers join a group of more than 40 women who allege they were drugged and sexually assaulted by the comedian.
Charlotte Fox and “Elizabeth” – who asked that her real name not be used – detailed their allegations against the 78-year-old comedian in a press conference held by civil rights attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing the alleged victims. The women were also joined in support by another alleged Cosby victim, Sarita Butterfield, who came forward with her story last November….
Cosby is scheduled to give his testimony on Oct. 9, after a California judge ordered the actor to give a deposition in the civil suit filed by Allred’s client Judy Huth – who claims the comedian molested her at the Playboy Mansion when she was 15 years old….

Walt Disney World has reportedly removed a statue depicting Bill Cosby from its Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando, Fla. after closing time on Tuesday.

Cosby accuser asks judge to void confidentiality deal

Andrea Constand, the former Temple University employee who lodged sexual-assault allegations against Bill Cosby in a 2005 lawsuit, now says she wants to publicly tell her story.
In court filings Wednesday, Constand asked a federal judge in Philadelphia to void a confidentiality agreement in her settlement deal with the actor-comedian, saying he and his representatives had repeatedly violated its terms and had left her little recourse but to respond.
She also asked for the release of a full transcript of a deposition Cosby gave in the case.
Excerpts of that deposition – unsealed this week – have reignited more recent controversy tied to allegations from more than two dozen other women who have also accused Cosby, 77, of sexual misconduct….
Cosby’s lawyer, Patrick O’Connor, has argued in recent court filings that those portions of the transcript do not provide a full picture of Cosby’s testimony….
Before settling her suit in 2006, Constand had lined up as potential witnesses 13 women willing to testify that Cosby had drugged and assaulted them.
The confidentiality agreement in Constand’s case bars her and Cosby from discussing the women’s allegations publicly….
