US Catholic Church tarred with new child sex abuse scandal
(AFP) – 8/19/10 LOS ANGELES – The Roman Catholic Church in the United States has become embroiled in a new pedophilia scandal with six women and one man alleging sexual abuse by a priest over three decades. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Oakland, California accused Father Stephen Kiesle of acts of sexual abuse between 1972 and 2001, and alleged that Catholic Church officials knew of the crimes but did not stop them….”The Catholic bishops in the United States of America and the Holy See have long facilitated the sexual molestation of children by engaging in the harboring and protection of known child molesting priests,” read a copy of the latest lawsuit obtained by AFP. “The bishops and Catholic hierarchs have done so to prevent the priests from being prosecuted and to avoid scandal,” the lawsuit read.

It said church figures “have subjected Catholic families and children in these communities to known pedophiles, counting on the devotion and reverence in the communities to keep any further abuse by the priests secret.” The plaintiffs, six women and one man, said they were abused by Kiesle throughout childhood and adolescence, although one alleged victim, Teresa Rosson, 48, said she suffered abuse at the hand of the cleric until about a decade ago….The church paid out 436 million dollars in 2008 for sex abuse cases involving clergy members, according to an official report last year. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gQBBSk_uYg4jA3-9tCdlGsxSDhnw

Half the Sky: how the trafficking of women today is on a par with genocide

The authors of a new book, Half the Sky, say the slavery and abuse of women is the greatest moral outrage of our century
Ed Pilkington The Guardian,  19 August 2010….The story of Neth and Momm is just a small indication of the lengths Kristof and WuDunn are prepared to go to expose the injustices that they see in the modern world. Buying up child prostitutes is pretty extreme, but no more than the message they are seeking to deliver in their groundbreaking book, Half the Sky.

In it, they argue that the world is in the grip of a massive moral outrage no less egregious in scale or in the intensity of despair than the African slave trade of the 18th and 19th centuries or the genocides of the 20th. They believe this outrage is a key factor behind many of the most pressing economic and political issues today, from famine in Africa to Islamist terrorism and climate change. Yet they say the phenomenon is largely hidden, invisible to most of us and passing relatively unreported. At worst it is actively tolerated; at best it is ignored….WuDunn chimes in: “When you hear that 60 to 100 million females are missing in the current population, we thought that number compares in the scope and size. And then you compare the slave trade at its peak in the 1780s, when there were 80,000 slaves transported from Africa to the New World, and you see there are now 10 times that amount of women trafficked across international borders, so you start to think you are talking about comparable weight.”….Half the Sky: How to Change the World by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn is published by Virago http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/aug/19/women-slavery-half-the-sky

Half the Sky: how the other half suffer    Half the Sky has been described as ‘a brutal awakening’ and is a bestseller in the US. But can its accounts of violence and injustice to women in the developing world really come as such a surprise?
Germaine Greer The Guardian….The book lays out “an agenda for the world’s women focusing on three particular abuses: sex trafficking and forced prostitution; gender-based violence, including honour killings and mass rape; and maternal mortality, which still needlessly claims one woman a minute”. Gender-based violence here includes wife-beating in Asia, but not wife-killing in Britain or America. “Rape has become endemic in South Africa” we learn – as if rape had not coexisted with apartheid.

Childhood stress leads to adult ill health, studies say
Stress in childhood has long-term effects say psychologists   14 August 2010 Adversity and stress early in life leads to long-term ill health and early death, a group of psychologists warn. A series of studies suggest that childhood stress caused by poverty or abuse can lead to heart disease, inflammation, and speed up cell ageing. The American Psychological Association meeting heard that early experiences “cast a long shadow” on health….

Another study presented at the conference showed that childhood events such as the death of a parent or abuse can make people more vulnerable to the effects of stress in later life and even shorten lifespan. Researchers at Ohio State University looked at a group of older adults – some of whom were carers for people with dementia. They measured several markers of inflammation in the blood which can be signs of stress, as well as the length of telomeres – protective caps on the ends of chromosomes which have been linked to age-related diseases. The 132 participants also answered a questionnaire on depression and past child abuse and neglect.

A third study reported some sort of physical, emotional or sexual abuse during childhood. Those who did face adversity as children had shorter telomeres and increased levels of inflammation even after controlling for age, care-giving status, gender, body mass index, exercise and sleep. Study leader Professor Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, said: “Our latest research shows that childhood adversity casts a long shadow on one’s health and can lead to inflammation and cell ageing much earlier than for those who haven’t experienced these events. “Those reporting multiple adversities could shorten their lifespan by seven to 15 years,” she added. Dr Andrea Danese, a clinical lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, said such studies had to be interpreted carefully because there is a chance that people do not recall their childhoods accurately and you can only show an association not prove causality. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t believe these results.

“The evidence is quite consistent. “It’s already been established that childhood stress has an effect on mental health and it now seems like it has an enduring effect on physical health.” He said that stress causes an increase in inflammatory proteins which could underpin the physical consequences suggested by the research.

Many viewers leave the theater believing that they have seen an objective documentary presented by a director who entrusted audiences to draw their own conclusions on Arnold Friedman’s and Jesse Friedman’s guilt. A careful review of the original evidence, however, shows that the case against the Friedmans was much stronger than the film revealed.

Geraldo Rivera’s interview with Jesse Friedman “Busting the Kiddie Porn Underground”  February 23, 1989 — Geraldo!
Jesse’s attorney, Peter Panera, is interviewed. He tells how he and Jesse made a special trip to Wisconsin to visit Arnold Friedman in prison to convince him to reveal where he had hidden the photos and videos of the children. Arnold refused to reveal what he had done with them, despite the fact that it would have helped gain lenacy for his son….Frances Galasso, the detective-sergeant who was in charge of the Friedman case, describes Jesse’s lack of remorse for his victims and describes how he and his brother harassed some of the victims’ parents at court proceedings. She says that Jesse told the grandfather of one victim: “Well maybe we are suffering now, but with what we’ve done to your children, they’ll suffer for the rest of their lives.” http://www.leadershipcouncil.org/1/ctf/geraldo.html
Excerpts from interview – based on videotape recording of the show, recorded on February 23, 1989.
Geraldo: “How many kids, Jesse, did you and your father actually physically abuse in your home?”
Jesse:   (long sigh, appears to be mentally counting) “I guess 17.” ….

Geraldo: “What did you do to the children?”
Jesse:  “What did I do to the children? I fondled them. I was forced to pose in 100’s of photos for my father in all sorts of sexual positions with the kids and the kids likewise with myself….

Bessent also reports on the victims’ fear of the Friedmans:

“As the abuse escalated so did the threats. Police said the children were extensively videotaped and photographed. No pictures of the children have been recovered. But police said Arnold Friedman told the children he would send pornographic pictures of them to magazines and tell the publishers to print their names if they told what was going on. He threatened to burn their houses down. He reportedly said he would kill their parents. . . . Some of the children who testified before the grand juries received threatening telephone calls warning them not to cooperate with police.”
“Some of them still wet their beds, take baseball bats to bed with them or are unable to sleep.”

State of New York v. Arnold Friedman.
Motion for order requiring return of property seized from 17 Picadilly Road, Great Neck, Nassau County, New York, seized pursuant to search warrant of November 25, 1987.  Motion #C-427, Indictment #67104 & 67430.
September 14, 1990.
Judge Abbey L. Boklan approved Arnold Friedmans’ request for the return of all property seized at the Friedman home with the exception of pornographic materials listed in this document.  Materials include such items as:  5 pornographic movies, assorted order forms for pornography, assorted pornographic magazine cutouts, 2 partially nude photos of children, 3 sheets advertising homosexuality with boys, 6 photos of naked people, 3 battery operated sex aids, 1 hypodermic needle, 9 pornographic computer games (with descriptions), list of names and phone numbers of 9 victims, 2 registration sheets with names of victims

163 A.D.2d 529; 558 N.Y.S.2d 603; 1990 N.Y. App. Div. LEXIS 8786
June 28, 1990 The Supreme Court of New York responds affirmatively to an appeal by Ross Goldstein who asks the state to reduce his sentence to the terms recommended and agreed to by the prosecution. Although he was not mentioned in the film, Mr. Goldstein was a third defendant who was arrested along with Arnold and Jesse Friedman. According to this document, Goldstein, a former friend of Jesse’s who was between 15 and 16 years old when he committed the crimes. He later became repulsed by the abuse, and six months before the Friedmans were arrested, Goldstein disassociated himself from Jesse Friedman and his activities. Goldstein, now age 19, confessed to the crimes and agreed to testify against both Arnold and Jesse Friedman in exchange for leniency.

Victims break their silence  Victor Manuel Ramos — Newsday  — LI., NY     February 29, 2004 Newsday  staff reporter Victor Manuel Ramos interviews several of the victims who Arnold and Jesse Friedman plead guilty to abusing.

“For Gregory, the hullabaloo over Jarecki’s film — and whether the director will pick up an Oscar tonight — is a sideshow to the legacy of the abuse. Even now, Gregory said he sometimes wakes up at night shaking, especially after hearing of other child abuse cases on the news or elsewhere. What would be passing news to others, hits home for him.
Diagnosed in his preteen years, Gregory said he has persistent rectal bleeding from the abuse. Memories aside, the physical scar will never let him forget. `This is the constant reminder I live with every day,’ Gregory said, `that I was abused.'”

Our research into the case shows that the director of the film sacrificed truth in favor of creating artistic ambiguity. Clear evidence is omitted and facts are distorted. In addition, the film relies on popular but erroneous myths about child sexual abuse. As a result, uncertainty is created about the guilt of two confessed pedophiles — who are recast as victims — while the real victims — the boys and their families — are portrayed as untrustworthy.

Transcript of Conference Presentation

Neil Brick is a survivor of Masonic based Ritual Abuse.  He is the editor of S.M.A.R.T. – A Ritual Abuse Newsletter. His topic   is: Fighting the Spin : The Truth about Child Abuse Cases

The address for S.M.A.R.T. is P O Box 1295, Easthampton, MA 01027 USA, E-mail: smartnews@aol.com

In the last 20 years, many child abuse and ritual abuse cases have been made public.  Almost all of these have been subjected to media campaigns and spin by organizations and researchers skeptical of the existence of ritual abuse.  These groups have done whatever they can to make sure that only their view on the topic is heard and that ours is not allowed to be made public.

We  discuss this at our website on a page called “False memory syndrome proponents tactics”  http://ritualabuse.us/research/memory-fms/false-memory-syndrome-proponents-tactics/

This presentation will briefly review some of the more famous child abuse cases and present the perspective of the victims of these crimes, not the perspectives of the alleged or convicted perpetrators or those defending them.  Information for this presentation is taken from the following websites.

Day Care and Child Abuse Cases
This page has information on the McMartin Preschool Case, Michelle Remembers, the Fells Acres – Amirault Case, the Wenatchee, Washington Case, the Dale Akiki Case, the Glendale Montessori – Toward case, the Little Rascals Day Care Center case, Fran’s Day Care case, the Baran case, the Halsey case and the West Memphis 3 case. http://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/day-care-and-child-abuse-cases/

McMartin Preschool Case – What Really Happened and the Coverup http://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/mcmartin-preschool-case-what-really-happened-and-the-coverup/

Another interesting case that won’t be discussed today is at:
Fran’s Day Care http://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/frans-day-care/

The presentation will close with a discussion of the blacklisting of several ritual abuse pages at Wikipedia and the deletion of information at Wikipedia from the victims perspectives of these crimes.  http://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/ritualabuse-us-blacklisted-by-wikipedia/

As many here know, Wikipedia and other Internet pages are controlled by those skeptical to many of the well proven ritual abuse and child crimes and those posting information at Wikipedia from the victim’s perspectives have been harassed by editors at Wikipedia or even banned from Wikipedia.

SMART has been advocating that survivors and co-survivors do not use Wikipedia as a resource until these articles are made more balanced and fair.

Michelle Remembers

The book “Michelle Remembers“ by Michelle Smith and Lawrence Pazder, MD was one of the first account of ritual abuse crimes.  Because of its influence, it has been one of the most attacked accounts, even being called “fiction” by some. Those defending the book have been attacked online.

In “A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER” pages xi – xiii” in the book, the publisher Thomas B. Congdon, Jr clearly shows how the accounts of the book were scrutinized and how experienced interviewers talked to several people involved in her childhood. Dr. Pazder’s strong  credentials were also discussed in detail.

And I quote “Two experienced interviewers journeyed to Victoria and talked to Dr. Pazder’s colleagues, to the priests and the bishop who became involved in the case, to doctors who treated Michelle Smith when she was a child, to relatives and friends. From local newspaper, clergy, and police sources they learned that reports of Satanism in Victoria are not infrequent and that Satanism has apparently existed there for many years. Satanism in Western Canada flourished in many areas with activities far more ominous than some of the innocuous groups now found in parts of the United States who claim some connection with Satanism. The source material was scrutinized. The many thousands of pages of transcript of the tape recordings that Dr. Pazder and Michelle Smith made of their psychiatric sessions were read and digested; they became the basis of this book. The tapes themselves were listened to in good measure, and the videotapes made of some of his sessions were viewed. Both the audio and video are powerfully convincing. It is nearly unthinkable that the protracted agony they record could have been fabricated.”

Yet, this is ignored by skeptics and attempts to get this information onto certain Internet pages has been blocked. Skeptical accounts from a Pagan website and an article from a tabloid instead are considered fact by skeptics attacking the article. One article skeptical of Michelle’s stories states her father’s opinion that her abuse didn’t happen apparently backs the fact her story was false. Of course, perpetrators and other family members often do deny that there is abuse in their families.

In a research study called “Sexual Abuse in Day Care: A National Study – Executive Summary – March 1988?  – Finklehor, Williams, Burns, Kalinowski “The study identified 270 “cases” of sexual abuse in day care meaning 270 facilities where substantiated abuse had occurred involving a total of 1639 victimized children….This yielded an estimate of 500 to 550 reported and substantiated cases and 2500 victims for the three-year period. Although this is a large number, it must be put in the context of 229,000 day care facilities nationwide service seven million children….allegations of ritual abuse (“the invocation of religious, magical or supernatural symbols of activities”) occurred in 13% of the cases.” The authors divided these cases into “true cult-based ritual,” pseudo-ritualism” with a primary goal of sexual gratification and ritual being used to intimidate the children from disclosing and “psychopathological ritualism” the activities being “primarily the expression of an individuals obsessional or delusional system.”  http://www.eric.ed.gov/PDFS/ED292552.pdf

McMartin

The most famous child abuse and ritual abuse case in the United States is the McMartin preschool case.

This case has had books and even a movie written about it. Unfortunately, almost all of these were all from a skeptical perspective and the victims’ perspectives of the case have been hidden from the public for years.  The case is written off by many skeptics as a case of false accusations, often using the propaganda term “witch hunt” to describe the case. Skeptics paint the case as being started by a mentally ill women and then they attempt to build a case of false memory implantation.

Yet, there is much more to the case than this. For one of the initial parents that brought the case to the police, Judy Johnson, there is no evidence she suffered from any form of mental illness when she brought the claims to the police after a doctor stated her son was sodomized and later her son named one of the workers at the pre-school as his perpetrator. There were allegations that she was later harassed after these allegations were made and that these and her drinking alcohol may have caused her later psychological problems.

The case went on for many years and was very complex, with hung juries and mistrials.  yet it is written off by skeptics as simply being a case of false accusations.

At the press conference following the trial, 9 of the 11 jurors who agreed to be interviewed indicated that they believed the children had been molested, but they felt that the evidence presented did not enable them to state beyond a reasonable doubt who had perpetrated the abuse.” (Behind the Playground Walls – Sexual Abuse in Preschools from an L A Times article)

One of the major skeptical books about the case was written by the Eberle’s. The Eberle’s are alleged to be former child pornographers. Our website has a lot of information on this case.

Fells Acres – Amirault Case

Another famous case, that occurred in the Eastern United States is the Fells Acres – Amirault Case.  This is another case written off by skeptics as a miscarriage of justice. It was even used recently against a Democratic politician running for Senate in a recent election in Massachusetts. Yet, members of both the Republican and Democratic parties have backed the conviction of Gerald Amirault. Even his victims as adults have gone public in the last decade to verify that they were abused. And Amirault lost every appeal he had. This case has been spun by a variety of media outlets.

The prosecutor of the case, Hardoon, stated “in Amirault, the majority of the female children who testified had some relevant physical findings, as did several female children involved in the investigation who did not participate in the trial. The findings included labial adhesions and hymenal scarring of the sort present in avery small percentage of non-sexually abused children.”

One of the trial transcripts states “All nine children testified in a broadly consistent way…The children testified to numerous instances of sexual abuse. Some of the children testified that they were photographed during this abuse, describing a big camera with wires, a red button, and pictures which came out of the camera. The children testified that the defendant threatened them and told them that their families would be harmed if they told anyone about the abuse….The Commonwealth also presented a pediatric gynecologist and pediatrician who examined five of the girls who testified…She made findings consistent with abuse in four of the girls.”

The victims stated in  “Mass. Victims Fight Commutation Plea” By Leslie Miller, Associated Press Writer  “During counseling meetings as a child, I would speak of a tall man touching me and taking pictures of me,” Phaedra Hopkins, 20, said at an emotional news conference. “So many times, Mr. Amirault hovered over me, touched me and hurt me and committed many disgusting acts of abuse.” ….“This family raped me, molested me and totally ruined my life,”said Jennifer Bennett, who was 3 1/2 years old when she started at Fells Acres. “We weren’t coaxed. We weren’t lying. We’re telling the truth and we always will,” said Bennett, 22. “I was there. None of you were there. We weren’t coaxed, nor were we ever ever ever brainwashed.”Brian Martinello, 21, said he was sexually abused by Amirault. His mother, Barbara Standke, claims her son came home from the day care with sores on his genitals and other people’s underwear. “I think it’s an absolute disgrace to let anyone out of prison for such a disgusting crime,” Martinello said.

A Republican governor decided against the commutation of Amirault’s conviction: Governor explains Amirault decision Says she needed to ‘live with myself’ By Douglas Belkin and Frank Phillips, Globe Staff, 2/21/2002 Swift said. ”I concluded after that review that the jury and the Supreme [Court] decisions should be upheld and that under the commutation guidelines commutation was not warranted,” Swift said…Swift said her staff conducted ”a more exhaustive review of all of the legal aspects” than the (parole) board did.

West Memphis 3

The last case I will discuss is the West Memphis 3 case. This case has been in the media for many years. Some skeptics paint the case as three innocent boys that were caught up in the hysteria of a small town and convicted simply for the reason that they were different than others in their town. But is this really the case? The trial transcripts and other accounts show something different. The case included a confession of one of three boys.  Some state the confession was coerced, others that it was not. One of the boys, Echols, bragged to others that he had killed the three young boys. Echols had a history of mental illness with allegations of violent acts toward others.  Yet, none of the skeptical accounts I have read discuss these. A second boy, Baldwin, supposedly told another boy he had committed the murders also.  Yet, this is written off by skeptics in apart because the other boy was an alleged drug addict and was not seen with Baldwin. Of course, none of this proves that Baldwin’s discussion with the boy did not occur. There was also evidence that the crime was committed as an occult crime. The case is very complex and ongoing and I recommend that people visit our website for more information.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is one place where skeptics of most child abuse and ritual abuse crimes control the content of the related pages.

In July, 2009, Wikipedia blacklisted the following important websites on ritual abuse: http://abusearticles.wordpress.com http://extreme-abuse-survey.net http://ritualabuse.us http://endritualabuse.org

People had been trying to get balancing information into Wikipedia articles on ritual abuse and child abuse topics without success. The first web page listed above had copies of trial transcripts of several cases. Once these web pages were blacklisted, almost all of this information was deleted from Wikipedia.

People had also been trying to get information about the Extreme Abuse Surveys into Wikipedia and other websites, also without success.  The Extreme Abuse Surveys have even been attacked by members of supposedly sympathetic organizations. Those unfamiliar with this excellent preliminary study may want to visit their website. Over one thousand survivors replied to this survey to discuss extreme abuse and ritual abuse crimes.

There are allegations that Wikipedia got its financial start from an organization called Bomis, which it is believed got much of its money from X-rated pornography.
See https://eassurvey.wordpress.com/2010/04/22/wikipedophilia-wikipedia-child-abuse-misinformation-clergy-abuse-suit/

There are also allegations that Wikimedia (Wikipedia’s parent company) contained child pornography.  https://eassurvey.wordpress.com/2010/06/26/pedophiles-find-a-home-on-wikipedia/
Articles on this can be found at foxnews.com and childlaw.us  online.

Other problems with Wikipedia include anonymous editors (meaning that anyone with any bias may be editing Wikipedia) and articles that are not always fact checked. Even their general disclaimer states:

WIKIPEDIA MAKES NO GUARANTEE OF VALIDITY http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer

“Please be advised that nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by people with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate or reliable information.”

“However, Wikipedia cannot guarantee the validity of the information found here. The content of any given article may recently have been changed, vandalized or altered by someone whose opinion does not correspond with the state of knowledge in the relevant fields.”

“Wikipedia is not uniformly peer reviewed; while readers may correct errors or engage in casual peer review, they have no legal duty to do so and thus all information read here is without any implied warranty of fitness for any purpose or use whatsoever.”

Yet, Wikipedia ranks very high in search engines, even with all of these serious problems with its information. I recommend that survivors find more accurate sources of information and not use Wikipedia.

The real question is why these and other cases are simply painted as miscarriages of justice when at times there is overwhelming evidence these crimes were committed, even when those convicted lost all of their appeals. This is obviously part of the backlash against child abuse survivors. Some people in the world do not want to believe that these type of things happen in the world.  Yet they do.

The important thing is to make sure that the victim’s sides of the story are heard. To get their versions of the story out to as many people as possible, so that those responsible for these crimes will continue to be held accountable and so that when children are raped in day care and other settings they will be believed. Make sure you read all of the above websites, familiarize yourself with all of these cases and tell everyone you know about these crimes.

We need to be our own advocates. If enough of us speak up, we will be heard.

OUR NEXT WEBINAR:
Saturday, August 21, noon to 2:00 Pacific time
(Check in at 11:45)
“How a ‘Non-Artist’ Uses Art for Healing.”
Flower aka Garden

We’ve had Webinars by Mike Skinner, a musician, and Lynn Schirmer, an artist, who use their talents to spread the word about publically. Most of us, though, use art and music in a much more private way to advance out own healing. Now we can hear somebody just like us share her process and reassure us that art is for everybody.

“How a ‘Non-Artist’ Uses Art for Healing.”
Flower will be showing slides of some of her artwork and explaining how she used art to help in her healing process. She is not an artist, and so brings the perspective that it is something anyone can do. Talent is not needed. 🙂

Flower is a survivor of SRA. She grew up in a generational cult family but was unaware of that until much later in life. Her love of writing is reflected in poetry, private journaling, and several blogs. One blog focuses specifically on her thoughts as a survivor. She has a strong faith in her Creator and has known Yeshua/Jesus since she was a small child…which is reflected in some of her healing art and writings. She also loves taking photos and combining them with encouraging words.

REGISTRATION:
The cost of each Webinar is $20.00, plus the cost of your telephone call to the East Coast. There are a limited number of full and partial scholarships available. Sexual Abuse in Day Care: A National Study – Executive Summary – March 1988 – Finklehor, Williams, Burns, Kalinowski “The study identified 270 “cases” of sexual abuse in day care meaning 270 facilities where substantiated abuse had occurred involving a total of 1639 victimized children….This yielded an estimate of 500 to 550 reported and substantiated cases and 2500 victims for the three-year period.

The Franklin Scandal  http://www.franklinscandal.com/ The FRANKLIN SCANDAL is the story of a nationwide pedophile ring that pandered children to a cabal of the rich and powerful. The ring’s pimps were a pair of political powerbrokers who had access to the highest levels of our government. Nebraska legislators nearly exposed the ring in 1990, but its unveiling had the potential to produce seismic political aftershocks. The legislators’ efforts resulted in rash of mysterious deaths and the overpowering corruption of federal and local law enforcement, including the FBI, Secret Service, and Justice Department, effecting an immaculate cover-up of the trafficking network.

The Hidden Tragedy of the CIA’s Experiments on Children
Wednesday 11 August 2010 H.P. Albarelli Jr. and Dr. Jeffrey S. Kaye, t r u t h o u t | Investigative Report

describes crimes

excerpts:

From early 1940 to 1953, Dr. Lauretta Bender, a highly respected child neuropsychiatrist practicing at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, experimented extensively with electroshock therapy on children who had been diagnosed with “autistic schizophrenia.” In all, it has been reported that Bender administered electroconvulsive therapy to at least 100 children ranging in age from three years old to 12 years, with some reports indicating the total may be twice that number. One source reports that, inclusive of Bender’s work, electroconvulsive treatment was used on more than 500 children at Bellevue Hospital from 1942 to 1956, and then at Creedmoor State Hospital Children’s Service from 1956 to 1969….Despite publicly claiming good results with electroshock treatment, privately Bender said she was seriously disappointed in the aftereffects and results shown by the subject children. Indeed, the condition of some of the children appeared to have only worsened. One six-year-old boy, after being shocked several times, went from being a shy, withdrawn child to acting increasingly aggressive and violent. Another child, a seven-year-old girl, following five electroshock sessions had become nearly catatonic.

Years later, another of Bender’s young patients who became overly aggressive after about 20 treatments, now grown, was convicted in court as a “multiple murderer.” Others, in adulthood, reportedly were in and of trouble and prison for a battery of petty and violent crimes. A 1954 scientific study of about 50 of Bender’s young electroshock patients, conducted by two psychologists, found that nearly all were worse off after the “therapy” and that some had become suicidal after treatment. One of the children studied in 1954 was the son of well-known writer Jacqueline Susann, author of the bestselling novel “Valley of the Dolls.” Susann’s son, Guy, was diagnosed with autism shortly after birth and, when he was three years old, Dr. Bender convinced Susann and her husband that Guy could be successfully treated with electroshock therapy. Guy returned home from Bender’s care a nearly lifeless child. Susann later told people that Bender had “destroyed” her son. Guy has been confined to institutions since his treatment.
To their credit, some of Dr. Bender’s colleagues considered her use of electroshock on children “scandalous,” but few colleagues spoke out against her, a situation still today common among those in the medical profession….

About the same time Dr. Bender was conducting her electroshock experiments, she was also widely experimenting on autistic and schizophrenic children with what she termed other “treatment endeavors.” These included use of a wide array of psycho-pharmaceutical agents, several provided to her by the Sandoz Chemical Co. in Basel, Switzerland, as well as Metrazol, sub-shock insulin therapy, amphetamines and anticonvulsants. Metrazol was a trade name for pentylenetetrazol, a drug used as a circulatory and respiratory stimulant. High doses cause convulsions, as discovered in 1934 by the Hungarian-American neurologist and psychiatrist Ladislas J. Meduna….

Here it should be noted that, during the cold war years, CIA and Army Counter-Intelligence Corps (CIC) interrogators, working as part of projects Bluebird and Artichoke, sometimes injected large amounts of Metrazol into selected enemy or Communist agents for the purposes of severely frightening other suspected agents, by forcing them to observe the procedure. The almost immediate effects of Metrazol are shocking for many to witness: subjects will shake violently, twisting and turning. They typically arch, jerk and contort their bodies and grimace in pain. With Metrazol, as with electroshock, bone fractures – including broken necks and backs – and joint dislocations are not uncommon, unless strong sedatives are administered beforehand….
CIC interrogators working in Germany would be assisted in their use of interrogation drugs by several “former” Nazi scientists recruited by the CIA and US State Department as part of Project Paperclip. By early 1952, the CIC’s Rough Boys would routinely use Metrazol during interrogations, as well as LSD, mescaline and conventional electroshock units….

Dr. Bender Discovers LSD

In 1955 and1956, Dr. Bender began hearing glowing accounts about the potential of LSD for producing remarkable results in children suffering mental disorders, including autism and schizophrenia. Bender’s earlier work with electroshock therapy had brought her into contact with several other prominent physicians who, at the time, were covert contractors with the CIA’s MK/ULTRA and Artichoke projects. Primary among these physicians were Drs. Harold A. Abramson, Paul Hoch, James B. Cattell, Joel Elkes, Max Fink, Harris Isbell and Alfred Hubbard. Some of these names may be familiar to readers. Dr. Abramson, a noted allergist who surreptitiously worked for both the US Army and CIA since the late 1940s, was the physician Frank Olson was taken to see, shortly before his murder in New York City in November 1953. About a year earlier, Drs. Hoch and Cattell were responsible for injecting unwitting New York State Psychiatric Institute patient Harold Blauer with a massive dose of mescaline that killed him. Dr. Elkes was one of the earliest physicians in Europe to experiment with LSD, having requested samples of the drug from Sandoz Chemical Co. in 1949. Elkes was a close associate of Dr. Abraham Wikler, who worked closely with Dr. Harris Isbell at the now-closed Lexington, Kentucky, prison farm, where hundreds of already drug-addicted inmates were given heroin in exchange for their participation in LSD and mescaline experiments underwritten by the CIA and Pentagon. Elkes worked closely with the CIA, Pentagon and Britain’s MI6 on drug experiments in England and the United States.

Dr. Fink, who was greatly admired by Bender, is considered the godfather of electroshock therapy in the United States. In the early 1950s and beyond, Fink was a fully cleared CIA Project Artichoke consultant. In 1951, CIA officials under the direction of Paul Gaynor and Morse Allen of the agency’s Security Research Service (SRS) that oversaw Artichoke, worked closely with Fink in New York City in efforts to thoroughly explore the merits of electroshock techniques for interrogations. The CIA was especially interested in the use of standard electroshock machines in producing amnesia, inducing subjects to talk and making subjects more prone to hypnotic control. According to one CIA document, Fink told officials “an individual could gradually be reduced through the use to electroshock treatment to the vegetable level.”….

Other physicians whom Dr. Bender consulted about the effects of LSD on children were Drs. Ronald A. Sandison, Thomas M. Ling and John Buckman. These three worked in England at both the Chelsea Clinic in London and Potwick Hospital in Worcestershire, outside of London. Sandison is credited with having been the first person to bring LSD into England, this in 1952 after he met Albert Hofmann in Basle, Switzerland, at the Sandoz Chemical laboratories. Hofmann handed Sandison a box of around 600 ampules, each containing 100 micrograms of LSD. Back in England, Sandison shared his psychedelic bounty with associates Drs. Ling and Buckman. Before the year was out, Sandison also turned Hubbard on to LSD, guiding Hubbard through his first trip. Sandison also began a new treatment program at the Gothic-looking Potwick facility that he dubbed Psycholytic Therapy. His program’s patients were mostly schizophrenics. In 1958, an LSD treatment unit was established at Potwick. Over the years, it has been reported that the CIA, MI6 and the Macy Foundation secretly helped finance the unit. Dr. Elkes helped by raising about $75,000 for the unit’s operation. For the next ten years the unit administered over 15,000 doses of LSD to about 900 patients….

Dr. Bender’s LSD Experiments on Children

Shortly after deciding to initiate her own LSD experiments on children, Bender attended a conference sponsored by a CIA front group, the Josiah Macy Foundation. The conference focused on LSD research and featured Dr. Harold A. Abramson as a presenter. In 1960, Abramson conducted his own LSD experiments on a group of six children ranging in age from five to 14 years of age. A few short months after the Macy Foundation conference, Dr. Bender was notified that her planned LSD experiments would be partially and surreptitiously funded by the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology (SIHE), another CIA front group then located in Forest Hills, New York. The Society, headed by James L. Monroe, a former US Air Force officer who had worked on top-secret psychological warfare and propaganda projects, oversaw about 55 top-secret experiments underwritten by the CIA. These projects involved LSD, ESP, black magic, astrology, psychological warfare, media manipulation, and other subjects. Apparently, Bender’s work with children and LSD raised some concerns at the CIA’s Technical Services Division (TSD). A 1961 TSD memo written to Monroe questioned the “operational benefits of Dr. Bender’s work as related to children and LSD,” and requested to be kept “closely appraised of the possible links between Dr. Bender’s project and those being conducted under separate MK/ULTRA funding at designated prisons in New York and elsewhere.”

In 1960, Dr. Bender launched her first experiments with LSD and children. They were conducted within the Children’s Unit, Creedmoor State Hospital in Queens, New York. The LSD she used was supplied by Dr. Rudolph P. Bircher of the Sandoz Pharmaceutical Company. (Dr. Bircher also provided Bender with UML-491, also a Sandoz-produced product, very much like LSD but sometimes “dreamier” in effect and longer lasting.) Her initial group of young subjects consisted of 14 children diagnosed schizophrenic, all under the age of 11…..

USA Swimming Hit With Another Sexual Abuse Lawsuit
Former Olympic Hopeful Swimmer Says California Coach Began Molesting Her at Age 15 By MEGAN CHUCHMACH August 11, 2010 In a sexual abuse scandal that continues to escalate, a new lawsuit against USA Swimming alleges the organization had knowledge of sexual misconduct by a California swim coach and continued to allow him to coach children.

The suit was filed by Jancy Thompson, a former Olympic hopeful who alleges that her former swim coach Norm Havercroft at West Valley swim club in San Jose, CA began sexually molesting her when she was 15-years-old. Also named as defendants are Havercroft, West Valley, and Pacific Swimming, the regional swim organization under USA Swimming….
Today’s lawsuit is the fifth facing USA Swimming in alleged sexual misconduct cases. Allard is also representing another plaintiff in a separate lawsuit against USA Swimming, a victim of former San Jose-area swim coach Andy King, who was sentenced in January to 40 years in prison for decades of abuse perpetrated against young swimmers.

Vatican pleased US plaintifs seek to dismiss case By ALESSANDRA RIZZO (AP) 8/10/10
VATICAN CITY — The Vatican said Tuesday it was satisfied that three men who had sought to hold the Vatican liable in an American court for sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests have decided to abandon the case. The Kentucky case was being closely watched as the clerical abuse scandal swirls around the Holy See. Lawsuits naming top Vatican officials were also filed recently in U.S. courts in Wisconsin and Oregon….The three plaintiffs filed a motion on Monday asking a federal judge in Louisville, Kentucky, to dismiss their claims.

Their attorney, William McMurry, said he was seeking to end the case because of an earlier court ruling that recognized the Vatican’s immunity and the failure to turn up new plaintiffs to add to the lawsuit who haven’t yet been involved in a Catholic clergy abuse case. The judge must still rule on whether the case can be dismissed, but attorneys on both sides say it has virtually ended. The lawsuit had been filed in 2004 by the three men abused by priests in the Louisville diocese. It was considered the first in the U.S. to make it to the stage of determining whether victims had a negligence claim against the Vatican. The lawsuit argued in part that U.S. bishops should be considered employees or officials of the Holy See. The Vatican has argued that its U.S. bishops act independently, control their own budgets and are not employees of the Holy See.
