Fla. agency blames Casey Anthony for daughter’s death

Nearly a month after Casey Anthony was acquitted of murdering her daughter, Florida officials have blamed Caylee Marie’s death on her mother’s failure to protect her, according to a report released today.  The state Department of Children and Families concluded its nearly three-year investigation by declaring that Anthony “failed to protect her child from harm either through her actions or lack of actions, which tragically resulted in the child’s untimely death.”

The report cites three “maltreatments: death, failure to protect and threatened harm. The probe, the agency’s second since abuse allegations first surfaced in August 2008, was not a criminal investigation, a department spokeswoman told the Orlando Sentinel. Although the findings were sent to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, no new charges will be filed.

Eight years ago, Newark Archbishop John J. Myers stood among the nation’s bishops at a landmark gathering in Dallas and helped craft a policy intended to cleanse the priesthood of pedophiles and restore trust among shaken American Catholics….Star-Ledger review of the archbishop’s record since 2002 shows Myers on at least four occasions has shielded priests accused of sexual abuse against minors and one adult. In the four instances, the priests have either admitted improper sexual contact, pleaded guilty to crimes stemming from accusations of sexual misconduct or been permanently barred from ministry by the archdiocese after allegations of sexual misconduct.
The archdiocese also wrote a letter of recommendation for one of the priests, a week after it learned he was accused of breaking into a woman’s home in Florida and possibly assaulting her.

From one perspective, the newspaper’s findings suggest Myers continues to take a cautious hand in publicly naming priests. The findings, coupled with testimony from a 2009 deposition, show the issue weighs heavily on Myers.

From another view, the archbishop has failed to live up to the guidelines and spirit of what was set forth in Dallas….

Myers’ spokesman, James Goodness, said the archbishop has lived up to his promises of 2002 and that the archdiocese has carefully followed procedures meant to bar abusive priests from ministry.

1. http://www.ra-info.org has posted a translation of the FAQ into Finnish! While this is wonderful, it makes it even more ridiculous that the German translation is only one-third done, there is no Italian FAQ,  and the French FAQ is awaiting proof reading.  Can anybody help out? Polish, Greek, Russian, Hebrew, and other languages would also be very welcome.

2. Survivorship is looking for a volunteer editor for their Journal. This involves soliciting articles, copy-editing, some lay-out, and gathering permission to publish forms. The position comes with a superb proof reader and a pool of people who have published before. It’s fun — I’ve done it! If you are interested, write info@survivorship and put “Attention: Dvora” in the subject line.

Sexual Abuse in Day Care: A National Study – Executive Summary – March 1998 – Finklehor, Williams, Burns, Kalinowski “The study identified 270 “cases” of sexual abuse in day care meaning 270 facilities where substantiated abuse had occurred involving a total of 1639 victimized children….This yielded an estimate of 500 to 550 reported and substantiated cases and 2500 victims for the three-year period.
